Who cares? He could be waving his arms and slapping cymbals between his knees and I wouldn't care. The point is, Now is the time. Now.

For what, exactly? It helps if you reveal what steps you’re seeking.

‘Gun control’ is complicated.

As a conservative, I’d support (I support) defined red flag laws (not “loosely” defined red flag laws, because otherwise anyone could deny anyone their right to self defense with any flimsy accusation), no guns til 21 (as well as voting), no semi or autos til 30, violent felons no guns at all, massive sweeps of known illegal gun activity (mostly cities like Baltimore), and universal background checks at all points of sale excepting shotguns.

And of course the biggie, which is the hardest, there has to be some focus on young introverted males who evidence disturbing behavior like this kid and all the others. Not sure what to do here but it’s clearly the #1 issue.

Is your head really that far in the sand to say the above is "deflection"?!?! It's not the only factor, but to be so dismissive of it is just utter lunacy. Those are all bigger factors than you think. It doesn't mean that guns don't remain the single biggest problem... Everything issue in life is not myopically cause/focused by one single factor..

They are NOT the biggest factors. The biggest factors are the number of guns, their easy availability, their increased lethality, and the availability of a shooter to armor themselves to be less vulnerable.

The 1920s had a huge increase in lethality of firearms with the wide availability of devices such as the Thomson submachine gun. The gun legislation of the 1930s (mostly found legal by the SC) redefined sawed off shotguns as "destructive devices" and made the possession of fully automatic weapons illegal with big penalties. It did fix the problem of those guns until the advent of the very small Uzi type weapons.

Until you deal with the actual problem (number of weapons, availability, lethality) you are allowing the problem to continue.

Instructive to watch grandstanding gubernatorial Democratic candidate Beto O'Rourke crash the governor's press conference as the genius Lt. Governor calls him an a-hole on national television as he orders the cops to remove him from the room.
I'm sure glad I don't live in Texas with these morons in charge.
Shameless grandstanding, staged political ploy during a very somber press conference.

He deserves to lose by a ton just for that.
Back to being wrong. It was the press conference that was political grandstanding.

*Elected* politicians are expected to host press conferences such as that as a rite of sharing grief and offering condolences. It’s civil.

Private citizens aren’t generally expected to stage a fundraising hysteric protest there.

Beto will lose a ton of support from the center because of this. I understand the lunatics of the left are screaming hosannas for him for the same, but in Texas, those folks aren’t any more than 10% of the electorate tops. Bad move strategically because it was a bad move morally. What an insufferable toolbox.
The governor and city/town mayor holding a press conference isn’t grandstanding. Parading every Republican holding an elected office related to Uvalde onto a stage is nothing except grandstanding.

Every person in the audience for the press conference should have joined Beto in his criticism of those useless elected officials.

The only time I want to hear “thoughts and prayers” is the answer is when I’m at church.
+ 1

Every Republican on that stage showed more anger at Beto interrupting their photo op than they did at the 19 dead children in their state.

Should be noted this does not require that you ban all guns. It does require that you elect representatives that understand and are dedicated to actually fixing the problem.

It is astonishing how the GOP is responding: more guns, more armed teachers/janitors, fewer doors, blame NBA, etc...

Looks like they are replacing "thoughts and prayers" BS with "horrified and heartbroken" BS

If you want/need a gun, prove that you can handle a gun. Japan's process for buying a gun requires an interview with the police about why you need a gun, a psych evaluation, 3 different permits and a background check that includes interviews of family and neighbors.

Right, but Japan isn't "exceptional;" only we are. Try to remember that.

... in Canada, guys wanting to purchase a gun have to present a signed letter from their wife or live in partner stating that they are ok with this, that they are not afraid of having a gun in the house. The wife / partner is interviewed.

It is only the US that does not consider gun ownership a serious subject, and there, mostly red state politicians.

Like many of this country's current problems, we are suffering with guns because of minority (republiCON senators) rule in Washington. NRA ownership of the republiCONs. The American public majority knows what they want -- limits on availability and lethality of guns.

Yesterday (and the day before), AR-15 and similar subjects were dominating Twitter. Today, no where in sight. #50 is assault rifle. And an hour ago, it wasn't on radar.

Today, the #1 trending issue is SaveTF2. What is TF2 you ask? Team Fortress 2 (TF2) is an old school multiplayer first-person shooter game. Apparently the manufacturer is putting it out to pasture. I find this not meaningless...

Interesting hearing stories and seeing videos of cops preventing parents from going in to try and save their kids, and not going in themselves. Sat around for 40 minutes while this kid murdered more and more children in that classroom.

Lots of failures here top to bottom.
