I'm more annoyed by the paltry Cornell attendance ...
Lots of Cornell fans turned out for the 2018 and 2019 ILTs in NYC, and for the 2019 game in New Haven. Must be tons of Cornell alumni in the NYC tri-state area, and not many students going to home games.

Meh. Ithaca's not a big college town.

I had at least a six or possibly 2 after the Cornell win against OSU and my local store almost was sold out of Flower Power after I bought mine.

Can Opener wrote: Mon May 16, 2022 12:02 pm To steal a line about the legendary Grove at Ole Miss, Brown may lose some games, but they never lose a tailgate. Stevenson Pincince field was absolutely feeling single and seeing double on Saturday night. Terry Foy from Inside Lacrosse said: "The story of this game is the environment. The 3,200 fans were electric." The place was truly rocking and was a sellout at that number. Given some looser gate checks, even more fans streamed in for the second half. Brown topped the Ivies in attendance. Here are the figures from this weekend:
Virginia at Brown 3,200 (sold out)
Ohio St. at Cornell 2,149
Richmond at Penn 2,061
St. Joe’s at Yale 1,400
BU at Princeton 1,037

At the three games outside Ivy venues this weekend, Rutgers had amazing numbers thanks to graduation taking place next door to the lacrosse game. Georgetown may have borrowed ticket counters from Fenway Park, since the TV images did not show 1,800+ attendees.
Harvard at Rutgers 5,212
Vermont at Maryland 2,672
Delaware at Georgetown 1,873

The two playoff games in this round hosted by Ivies in 2019 drew these numbers.
Army at Penn 2,218
Georgetown at Yale 1,689

Brown State abides! (Or imbibes.)
Rutgers had 4,500 for the PSU game. While graduation may have helped a little bit, it was more the team is playing well and what was at stake. While Rutgers fans showed out, Harvard brought a nice contingent of people to the game. Credit them also.
I was trying to figure out a way to portray Brown as the best atmosphere of the weekend, but I can't quite do it with a straight face. That was definitely true among the Ivies, but TV made the Rutgers scene look really cool. Love the hand grenade lobs of beers over the back fence!

The Rutgers scene was as good as it gets. Perfectly sized venue, great weather, lots of tailgating and an entire side of the field where the fans could be on the fence that was nearly on the sideline. Pretty old-school that way. Only thing missing was the guys from the DU dressing a keg up like their little brother and sneaking him/it into the game.

Lacrosse is a funny sport at Cornell. Unlike ice hockey, which still seems to get its 4,000 for many games, lacrosse doesn't draw as well. I have the opportunity to speak with young alums in interviews and other activities. They are proud of the success of the lacrosse team, but (if asked) have typically not attended a game.

Well... hockey is THE sport on the hill, right? I mean, heck, when I was up there Chad Levitt had the season where he almost broke Ed Marinaro's Ivy League rushing record (crazy the way that ended, btw). And yet you could still get a seat at the Kopf to watch that team. Hockey? Toughest ticket in town. RPI or Harvard in town? Forget about it. Cornell lax was in a down period (transition from some guy named Moran to some guy named Pietremala).

With all the long islanders and Canadians at Cornell, you'd think there'd be a critical mass of lax fans to give the Kopf some juice. Maybe if Buczek can string together some strong seasons things will change.

In the Streak years, 15-25,000 for a lax game was possible, but those were different times. When Ed Marinaro broke the NCAA rushing record, there must have been close to 30,000 fans between the Crescent and the West Stands. This year Coach Byrne at Harvard actively recruited alums and families to increase attendance (although those games were in major metro areas). With success and good weather, possibly attendance can go up in Ithaca. Attendance in Boston, New Haven, Philly, Princeton and Providence can be boosted by more active recruiting of Cornell alums (lax and non lax alums).

Let's not forget in the attendance discussion, we love the availability to watch on espn+, or other outlets depending on the league, and when it's 38° with 20mph winds and a sideways rain blowing, it can take parents' love to be at the game live, sitting on aluminum or concrete.

This.

I know it's a stupid comparison, but my son plays varsity basketball at a school more known for its academics and arts than athletics (though it does have a world-class girl's volleyball team that's won national titles and does tends to draw). This last year was his Jr. year, and he and his friends got fed up with the pathetic attendance numbers. Two days before every home game, they went throughout the school, class to class, actively recruiting people - teachers and kids - to come to the games. It's a k-12 school, and they were relentless. Their last few games, they were near full in the gym where they play, and they had by far the best group of fans travel to their sectional games that I've ever seen.

It helped that they had a very good team this year, but I think their efforts made a difference (plus the administration of the school pitching in and throwing out the usual promotions, etc). You can't just assume that putting a good product on the field will result in bodies in the seats. There's so much going on these days, so many competing sports and activities - especially at a place like Cornell - you really need to advertise it and put it out there in front of people.

Well, the Kopf does hold a few more people than Lynah Rink.

And to be fair, Cornell had a very good hockey season this past year, but the games I watched on TV were pretty sparsely attended (for hockey, anyway). I was surprised to see so many empty seats. Maybe it picked up late in the season, but I think people are still coming out ouf their COVID-shells, which might have impacted the lax attendance, at least early season, too.

Back in my heyday as an undergrad, my frat and especially myself would try to make EVERY game at the Kopf. We made it like an all-day affair ( euphemism for big party), starting early and going late with the game mixed in somewhere in the middle. HOWEVER if the weather was its usual awful self, only us Diehards would go, so the weather played a huge role in the Lax attendance. When the weather was great, we could easily have 5000 there but if the weather was bad it would be more like 500. I absolutely love the KOPF but as I get older and softer, an indoor facility for Lax would be great and even on those 20 degree wind chill days with snow blowing, I could see getting 2 or 3000 INSIDE in a climate controlled facility.

Way back in the day, the season started in April. The 1977 championship season started March 26 at Adelphi. Big difference in effect on attendance.

Strange. The announcers were always expressing surprise at the sparse attendance. I wonder if it was well below what was allowed with the restrictions.

It’s a tough comparison between then and now. Games starting in February and availability to watch from anywhere have changed the game, likely overall for the better but not all. It’s not a fair comparison to look at attendance in Ithaca and Hanover compared to big city schools. Curious if they have overall attendance including online attendance.

Another factor in the low Cornell v Ohio St student attendance was finals staring Monday.

Obviously today's college kids have their priorities askew if they are skipping a lax game to study! What the heck?!?! ;)

Right. This is something Cornell could easily fix. In years Cornell makes the NC$$, either call off finals or just give students who turn in a ticket stub from the game A's on their finals.

As an intended consequence of the latter alternative, this would make Cornell's grading profile more closely resemble Harvard's.
