Can you escape the clutches of the counterfactual?
"There is nothing more difficult and more dangerous to carry through than initiating changes. One makes enemies of those who prospered under the old order, and only lukewarm support from those who would prosper under the new."
Re: Could Duke or Notre Dame beat these teams?
Who cares? Neither earned their way in...ON THE FIELD.
Re: Could Duke or Notre Dame beat these teams?
No, because their season is over.
Re: Could Duke or Notre Dame beat these teams?
They’ll both have to wait until next year
to answer that.
to answer that.
Re: Could Duke or Notre Dame beat these teams?
I'm pretty sure the answer is no.45wewantmore wrote: ↑Sat May 14, 2022 12:46 pm Game One:

We're in the tourney now; those are both tourney teams. You have to be invited to the tourney to play tourney teams in the tourney.
Notre Dame and Duke were not invited to the tourney. Therefore they won't be beating either of those teams.
Re: Could Duke or Notre Dame beat these teams?
We’ve jumped the shark with this conversation. Let it go!
Re: Could Duke or Notre Dame beat these teams?
NOPE.NO A CHANCE.
Re: Could Duke or Notre Dame beat these teams?
ND had the #17 SOS. Not good enough. Schedule some tougher teams than Detroit Mercy next year.

Reminder: "Eye test" really means "what name is on the front of the jersey."
Clearly, the committee didn't follow the RPI. They used a different eye test.

Re: Could Duke or Notre Dame beat these teams?
Just go straight RPI, as hockey does*. Works fine, people don't send death threats to the committee.
And please don't say RPI doesn't work in lax because fewer games. Fewer games means that any ranking system, including a subjective eye test, has less info to work with. That's just the way it is. Deal.
Straight RPI would have had Duke and ND in over OSU and Harvard.

Re: Could Duke or Notre Dame beat these teams?
Yes, less info hurts any system. But which is hurt more: algorithms that are asymptotically efficient and can not use prior information, or a subjective eye test that uses rater experience? The answer, I suggest, is "it depends," not "statistical methods are always better than human/subjective ones." Deal.CU77 wrote: ↑Sat May 14, 2022 10:01 pm Just go straight RPI, as hockey does*. Well…a quantitative system at least allows transparency of a system that puts everyone on clear equal footing. Creates trust and transparency that’s it critical to any organism or system to thrive and grow.
