The statistics an athlete accumulates during a season before receiving a medical redshirt count, so why shouldn't these? It's pretty much the same concept. Even without medical redshirts and COVID years the # of games in a players career can still vary greatly.
Kylie Ohlmiller currently has the record for career points with 498 in 4 years and 84 games, no redshirts.
- Hoeg wasn't even close to that after finishing her COVID extra year with 370 points in 89 games
- Ortega currently sits at 412 points in 80 games & potentially 10 more games max (assuming they make it to the ACC championship game & get a 1st round bye and make it to NC game)
- North currently sits at 378 points in 74 games & potentially 11 more games max (assuming they make it to the ACC championship game & get a 1st round bye and make it to NC game)
Both North and Ortega would have to put up some serious numbers to even sniff KO's record. Ortega needs to average about 8.5 ppg (she currently averages about 5.4 ppg) and North would need to average 10.9 ppg (she currently averages 5.68 ppg).
Also, notice the difference in the # of career games between Ortega and North (80 & 74). This is because Duke failed to make the NCAA tournament in 2018 & 2019. So my point, in all of this rambling, is that disparities of as much as 6 games (or more) happen organically without the COVID year. And Kylie Ohlmiller's normal, 4-year, 84 game NCAA career is actually going to be longer than Charlotte North's career with the COVID year and a max of 83 games. edit: CN will potentially have 85 career games if BC makes it to the NC game - but my point is still the same. There's a one game difference between a player who had a normal 4 year career and a player who had a "COVID" season plus 4 years.
One more just for fun:
Jessica Karwacki holds the career DC record with 645 in 66 games. She played for Robert Morris University who never made it farther than their conference tournament semi-final. There are teams with players who will finish (and have finished) their careers with 20+ more games and still not come close to this record (edit: but Maddie Jenner is currently in hot pursuit).
