UNC looked like a better team for the first 30 minutes, and then UVA just stepped it up to another level. I was impressed with UNC's FO + Goalie play. After a slow start I can see them putting it together and being a real contender in May.
Not much else to add, Virginia is loaded with talent, and when they play well they're fantastic to watch. Schutz looked fast to me, for a 6'3" 220lb man.
As for the announcing, as far as I'm concerned Quint K can do whatever he wants on these midweek broadcasts--he's in the Madden zone for lacrosse announcers. Do hope it's a little more buttoned up for Memorial Day Weekend though.

Frustratingly unable to watch and sorry if this was covered but did Saustad in fact not play?

Re: UVA at UNC
Pretty good chance that Maryland and Virginia play twice this year and pretty likely split games. If they split, I would prefer to win the 2nd one, a much bigger game. Virginia isn't completely healthy on D. They are missing their top LSM and their captain and #1 cover guy at close D in Saustad. Kaestner, had been the #2 guy and did a masterful job limiting Grey. There is a reason he was added to the Teewarton list recently along with 3 of his teammates. The UNC goalie might be the best in the nation if he keeps playing like that. He kept UNC in the game.
Re: UVA at UNC
After being down 5-2, Virginia outscore them 13-6 rest of the way despite UNC goalie standing on its head, and two garbage goals. Defense settled in and Virginia was pretty solid in last 4 minutes of first through the end of the third.
UNC face off man and their ride created decent opportunities.
Virginia got a little sloppy and pressed at times after UNC keeper made some good saves, could have value ball more late in the 3rd and likely extended lead a bit more by getting better shots instead of making high risk passes by defensive middies.
Field was awful.
Will be exciting to get Saustead and Wayer back. Defense should be very good with this time allowing our depth to gain experience.

Appallingly bad !!!! I almost feel bad for poor Q the K constantly babbling to validate his cool factor. Rather sad...Typical Lax Dad wrote: ↑Thu Mar 10, 2022 9:38 pmI am sick of hearing about what parents and coaches eat and where you can get a great hoagie or egg sandwich. You never hear this stuff in a basketball or football game.
Re: UVA at UNC
The score could have been worse for UNC, but Krieg kept the Heels in the game with 18 saves (vs 8 by Nunes).
As others have noted, the defense adjusted to Saustad's absence and played well. Kastner showed how important Gray is to UNC now that the Heels lack the midfield depth of the past two years.
Will be interesting to see how the Hoos match up against the Terps, who have looked awfully consistent and rarely threatened this year.
Re: UVA at UNC
Becoming clear to me each week that Kasner is not only the best defender on that team but also the best in the game with unusual mobility and coordination for his length. He is truly a freak and only getting better . When UVA d get back to full strength , would consider them having the best defensive unit in game regardless of any sabertician stats . SSDM group looks stronger than ever and that Nunes is as good as advertised. Odds still agaisnt three peat because it takes only one off day in playoffs but if they get and remain healthy they have as good of a shot as any . Maryland and UVA are the cream.Hope to see all their players ready to go for that game.

Re: UVA at UNC
If UNC goes undefeated and Shelley craps the bed maybe. But when you pretty much disappear against a top teams #2 defender it really really hurts your odds. Big players step up in big games. He did not

In fairness to Grey, Kaestner is a Teewarton candidate despite having been the #2 cover prior to that game. He is a freak……..

I thought UNC was much sloppier than UVA with passing.
Also, two of Moore’s goals can only qualify as improbable. No time left on shot clock each, defenseman all over him, shoots in the only possible blind spot of Krieger.
UVA is beatable.
Re: UVA at UNC
Not saying he's a slouch and now he's more deserving of the tewey than gray. Gray should put up numbers if his defender ties him up with a rope if he wants that awardblue angels wrote: ↑Fri Mar 11, 2022 11:32 amIn fairness to Grey, Kaestner is a Teewarton candidate despite having been the #2 cover prior to that game. Re: UVA at UNC
Certainly beatable making some of the decisions from last night and if a keeper makes 18 saves, I agree.
By garbage goals I mean ball pops out of a scrum right in front of goal for a scoop and score and one the defense makes a great double team and checks ball free and pops into unc players stick right in front of goal. They count just the same and are going to happen, but when it is two of six goals over the last 49 minutes of play it speaks to defense playing well.
Not really a good comparison to compare to what an all american and hero of the first of our two national title runs did to beat a defense and goalie. A 40-40 guy with 240+ career points going against a defender that couldn't handle him making good shots doing what he does? To me that just speaks to the UVA offense, if we can't get the slam dunk we usually get out of our offense we still have guys who can get it done at the end of a shot clock if we have to.

So Chris Gray is out of the competition for the Tewaarton trophy?Maverick wrote: ↑Fri Mar 11, 2022 11:46 amNot saying he's a slouch and now he's more deserving of the tewey than gray. Thanks for the obvious. Every team is beatable this year and no one is likely to go undefeated. Talent is too widespread.Peter Brown wrote: ↑Fri Mar 11, 2022 11:33 amUVAlaxfan wrote: ↑Fri Mar 11, 2022 9:41 am After being down 5-2, Virginia outscore them 13-6 rest of the way despite UNC goalie standing on its head, and two garbage goals. Re: UVA at UNC
no way. Too early in year with too good of numbers. Think he still had 4 points against a monster defender. UNC makes a run and he is very much in it.Typical Lax Dad wrote: ↑Fri Mar 11, 2022 11:51 amSo Chris Gray is out of the competition for the Tewaarton trophy?Maverick wrote: ↑Fri Mar 11, 2022 11:46 amNot saying he's a slouch and now he's more deserving of the tewey than gray. Re: UVA at UNC
Nothing was decided last night, Gray is an unreal talent who has taken over several games despite being the focus of opposing defenses . Doesn't have the supporting cast of uva nor the unc cast of last year Saw the slippery field causing footing problems for those who cut sharply and reverse . Gray had a few backhanders off catches that just missed besides not getting a few more assists as teammates failed to convert. . Gray and Shellenberger are two unreal players who are so enjoyable to watch. Looking forward to the UVA UNC rematch hopefully on a better playing field.
