Narewski is in uniform again. If he's not an option, then why dress him? There are some teams you can survive going 1/14 at the faceoff dot against....Virginia is not one of them.

Let's see Phillips in the second half. I mean, why not. What are you gonna do, only score 1 goal again?
Agree. Let’s see how the bench responds.

The difference in the quality of off-ball play is really startling, both on offense and defense. Virginia players off-ball are always in motion, moving where they need to be, whether on defense, clears, or offense.

Blue Jays always seem to be a step slow and a play behind in their off-ball play. They don’t look in sync and their heads don’t always seem to be in the game.

Non-face off GBs is close … 12 to 9 Virginia. Cavaliers aren’t blowing away Hopkins on pure speed.

Perfect example on the second face off of the second half … three Cavalier players are converging on your face off man and a Hopkins player, instead of moving his feet to help, runs towards the restraining line.

You are 11 goals behind. Just 20 minutes left in the game. Winning face offs is tough.

Shouldn’t you be implementing your own ten-man ride to cause some turnovers and steal some possessions?

Don’t have a ten-man ride? Don’t even practice it? Why the f*ck not?!?

You must be watching a different game, doc. When Hop does try to pressure the clear, UVa just blows right by them with quickness and speed.

If Hopkins was pounding Monmouth 14-3 near the end of the 3rd, and the Monmouth announcers and chat board warriors were talking about how they needed to change their FO wing play or adjust their rides…you would laugh Doc. Hopkins, at this point in time, is Monmouth to UVA. Their roster is so massively better, you could play this game 30 times with any coach in the history of lacrosse coaching for you and not win one. I don’t say that to try to needle or be an ass. It’s what the program needs to grasp to get better. The players on Hop are indeed really good lacrosse players, and for all of those “championships” in the 30’s and 40’s that was enough. Everyone has those players now. Grimes, and most of the rest, are just a guy. Everyone in the top 20 has Grimes. Hopkins needs to stop so myopically hyping up their roster and actually look at them, not if they are GOOD, but how they are relative to the players on the other top teams (they are worse).

That point was passed a long time ago.

But I understand your point … when’s the last time Virginia started putting in subs at the start of the 4th quarter?

My point is, when Hopkins couldn’t buy a face off, why didn’t they implement their own ride? Are they so lacking in athleticism, speed, and skill that they cannot implement their own ten-man ride? Isn’t that part of why you implement a ten-man ride … to help compensate against a deficiency in speed or athleticism? When a team is beating you by ten goals with half the game left and dominating possessions, isn’t it worth trying a hard ride?

So … where is it?

Any team that wants to beat the Blue Jays will practice an aggressive ride. So the Blue Jays need to practice against a hard ride. If you’re going to practice it, why not play it in a game?

no. a 10 man ride isn't implemented to help compensate against a deficiency in speed or athleticism.

The key to a 10-man is having a very athletic goalie and generally very good athletes all over the field. Not many teams use this because it can create scoring opportunities for the clearing team, including shooting at an empty goal.

DocBarrister
When the other guys are bigger, faster and more athletic, poise doesn't much matter.
Not true. This is a coaching issue. Kirson’s turnover on the crease is a perfect example. The spacing on that clear attempt was horrible. No easy outlet pass available and Kirson turns it over.

That’s just a failure to coach basics.

DocBarrister
Doc: Kirson is a SIXTH-year player. If he can't make a good decision on an outlet pass by now, coaching is the least of it. (btw: UVa has something to do with our spacing, or lack thereof. As a result of their quickness and speed, they seem to be everywhere.)
We have had “spacing” issues all season, even in our wins.

Spacing is really off-ball play. Players need to be in sync and working together, whether clearing the ball or working on offense to get high percentage shots. We’re not seeing that at all. Most of the time, it’s not even clear what the team is trying to do on offense.

I hear you on this, when down so much and can’t get a face off, why not go 10 man to try to get more possession. If you want to look at is just as trying to practice it for later games, I think that’s a great idea. But for this game, you can’t look at it as trying to get you back in the game. If Duke is beating UMBC in hoops by 30 with 5 minutes left, they can go into a full court press to practice it for later games and that is fine. In THAT game though, it is going to cause them to lose by more and in this game if Hopkins tried a 10 man on a team where, again, I don’t mean to be an ass, but where every starter and most of the second line players are better athletes than any player on Hopkins, it would have been a layup line
