Biggest concern for me is getting punched in the mouth shortly after getting off the bus and playing from behind.
Hey, that hardly ever happens!

Forecast light rain at 6:00, mid 30’s. Maybe some snow with temps dropping to low 30’s. Changes by the minute as I’m sure you know.

Ah yes... lacrosse, the spring sport. The annual Hobart v Cornell match is always one where records and prognostications don't matter. A battle no matter the score. The 1978 game is still the only regular season game to get a full write-up in Sports Illustrated. It is still "the game of the year" for me.
As a Cornellion, my all-time greatest game was my junior year, 1977, and we were on like a 30 game winning streak, and JHU , came to the Kopf , and punched us in the mouth leading 6-1 at halftime. We were stunned as we were used to s
Clobbering people. Well Richie must have used some choice words at halftime, and Macaneany and the boys rallied to an 8-7 win. An epic game for the ages.

That final score was 12-11 in favor of the Big Red. I remember once hearing from a JHU supporter who criticized the 42 game winning streak, proclaiming that the Big Red hadn't played anyone. I never heard from them again once I pointed out that the Big Red beat JHU 5 times during the streak!

I played against that '77 team and I'm not surprised that Moran turned the ship at half time.

We managed to throw them off their game on our home turf in Hanover by putting the defensive back on our football team, our fast as lightning but otherwise 3rd string midfielder in a face guard situation with Eamon. We knew Eamon could run circles around any of our big lumbering defensemen.

They apparently hated each other having played 4 years against each other in football. Our guy, B Taylor, was black, and as we came together at midline to shake hands the two of them started cursing each other, racial epithets and spittle flying...neither of them had all their teeth...dropped gloves...both out for 4 minute penalties. In the box they kept cursing each other and when the penalty was up, they erupted again, benches clearing...out another 4 mins...at the end of the 1st Q we were tied.

I saw Ritchie taking Eamon down the sideline, arm over Eamon's shoulder, Eamon arguing (I'm sure you can picture the scene)...I could only imagine what Ritchie was saying...something to the effect of "stop it, go score some goals'...and he did. they lit us up the rest of the way.

We did manage to upset them in '79, first Ivy team to beat Cornell in years.

Moran was a terrific coach, IMO. Always very kind to me over the years as well. Gracious.
MDLaxFan, I can't let your comment about my friend Eamon McEneaney go unchallenged. You accuse him or his opponent of saying "racial epithets". As Eamon has been gone for over 20 years and can't defend himself, please refrain from making such accusations. Eamon was not a racist and the implication he was is offensive.

1313, my understanding is that Eamon was a terrific guy, husband and father, and I'm sure friend. And I admired the heck out of his game, his incredibly intense competitiveness as well as his tremendous skills.

Absolutely no insult intended. I should have made that clear.

I have no idea about his true sentiments about race, and I'll certainly take your word for it. I don't think the intent of any of it was actually racist.

But I was right there in the middle of the field with them. And our guy was certainly no racist either, but I assure you he called Eamon some very choice words as well, including a racial one...I have no idea who said what, first, (may well have been our guy first) but these guys had a very extended history of going head to head in football as they matched up directly for 4 years. And, I don't know what your experiences were playing back in those days, but foul mouth trash talk was far from out of the norm...I suspect they were each trying to flip off the other. And it may well have been our guy's intent to do so. Again, neither had all their teeth...so it was quite a scene.

I offer this story entirely humorously. Sorry for the offense.

Gotta like anybody whose missing a tooth or two. Damn implants were expensive 17 years ago. Shudder think how much they cost today. Anyway, should be a good midweek neighborhood rivalry game.

Massey has Cornell as a 5.5 goal favorite? That seems a bit too much without Long (presumably) in the lineup.

85% win prob. I was thinking more like 60/40, casino style blackjack when following “the rules” area.

After watching both Cornell‘s slick passing offense and Hobart’s D, I’m afraid this one will not be as close as many seem to expect.

Don't put too much stock in Massey. His formula uses prior-year results heavily early in the season. My guess is that the Massey computer is using 2020 Cornell results for that.

Why not ?
So far, so good w/ Hobart, I’m on the bandwagon,

but yes, for sure that is one slick quick passing,
and don’t leave large size-wise Big Red offense.

We are working in two new close D starters (Duby & Horton) around a seasoned very good one (Christiansen) and have deep and experienced LSMs and a second year starter goalie. Have missed a few slides in the first two games. But they look like they will be just fine and improve game to game and I trust the staff to have them ready.

We will see. We need to bring the same energy and effort that we did against Lehigh and the movement we had on offesne in the first two games. Some of the best off ball movement I've seen in the Raymond era, including the 19-20 editions with Holden, Scott, Aslanian, Knox etc.

Ref race, etc, my only addition is that in my loose association with #10, I had no indication that he was racist in any way. I do know that he had friends who were people of color. Also, the Cornell football team (on which he was highly respected) was quite diverse, and it'd have been tough to be any type of racist and get along there. What might have been uttered in the heat of battle is another story, and one would need to look back to those times in full context to judge much of anything. Sewanhaka was quite a melting pot as best I can tell, and I'd not be surprised if all types of ethnic "slurs" could have been in the most heated vocabulary of some, likely some aimed at those of Irish heritage as well.

Also, it's fair to note that Richie Moran was always encouraging in finding under represented minorities to play lacrosse at Cornell, and has many friends of all backgrounds and ethnicities from Cornell Athletics. He'd not tolerate racist behavior.

Well said; I regret any suggestion otherwise and I apologize for the offense given.

And you're exactly right about what most athletes who've played on diverse teams feel about their fellow players, and by extension on issues of race. At least that's been my experience and I'd not have expected differently at Cornell.

That's why they play the games...as far as slick passing, no one was better than Teat and he's gone. Extend out and pressure and see how the Red handle it...if we don't have the horses to do that, I'm sure Coach Raymond has a zone package in his pocket. Will be tough, but would love to see a barn-burner today!

Passing is better now that Teat and Petterson are gone.

That's just to conceal the horror of the outcome of todays game!

(please nobody save these posts down to their computer, I have confidence here far greater than in the real world with respect to the coming game even if I do like my team this season)
