wahoomurf wrote: Mon Mar 11, 2019 8:50 am The guys (Lars) need to spend more time on beating a zone. The exchanges were not crisp. The time it takes for a player to adjust to a sloppy pass gives ample time for the defense to get back into rhythm. No excuses for such a skilled, experienced team. Stick high, ear hole, basic 101 stuff.

Why was Laviano replaced on man-up?

Goss is a terrific stopper. IMO, the lads took too many outside shots. Lots of easy saves.

Outhustled on ground balls? Were those guys better conditioned? Running in snow banks is tough. Gotta lift those knees.

Bruno is a fine team. Yet for most of Q-1, it looked like we didn't take them seriously.

We let Bruno take too many shots. Thank Yahweh, Rode stepped up.....big time.

FOs were inconsistent. Or was their guy that good?

Conrad is such an important cog in the wheel. Timely, stellar wing play, feeding skill, hustling his chords off.Leadership!
Perfect questions. IMHO and experience the lack of cohesion in any team at this level is the result of a survival of the fittest mentality and fomented by focus on stats in a sport where there a lot of meaningless stats. There is not a stat for leadership.

Had no idea that Virginia hadn’t beaten Notre Dame since 2006. That’s absolutely amazing.

Not really. I don't think Notre Dame was a regular opponent for UVa, until 2014 when ND joined the ACC.
UVa was the last place team in the ACC several of those years.

You're correct. They weren't on the schedule regularly until they joined the ACC. UVa beat them in the 1994 and 2006 NCAAs and lost to them in the 2012 NCAAs.

The Cardiac Cavs do it again! Exciting win. They seem to like the challenge of playing from behind. Huge ACC win for UVA.

Concerned about the goaltending again.

Anyone have insights?

the insight that i can share is the staff likes rode to date, though that's not really insight.
the stats are what they are. through x # of games --- you or anyone can opine about whether they will change much for a goalie. i know what i think. in the meantime, i'll take where they are, given how they've had to pull out about every win from behind.

I agree, though that's not exactly the "insight" I was looking for above. ;)

I quite agree about being pleased with the current position UVA is in, all the more so for the comeback wins.

But this is a lacrosse discussion, so I raise this question.

UVA needed better goaltending and got it for a game each by their tenders.

I liked the offensive tweak by the staff to let 1st year Jack Simmons initiate the offense in the 1st half and let Dox carry all the defensive attention with him out to the wing. Simmons has wheels and routinely beat his short stick defender drawing slides. It was a nice change up that allowed Dox rest for the 2nd half run and caused some problems for the Domer D. It was an encouraging tactical move to get the ball in the stick of a talented player, likely not in the opponent's scouting report. He certainly will be going forward.

Interesting to me was that Rode was lights-out at the start of the game - right up to the penalty, and then he seemed to lose something. The staff seems to be very committed to him as the starter - can they still redshirt Burkinshaw?

MD: BETTER AND MORE CONSISTENCY IN GOAL? Or is consistency the key to getting better. Not quite a chicken/egg scenario, however......I will defer to your expertise as an erstwhile GK.

I'd be more worried about losing him to another program next year.
If you don't get the starts when the stats have this differential, when will you?
(huge caveat that we don't know about injuries, sickness, practice stuff, etc)

I don't think he's eligible for redshirting other than medical redshirt, but someone could correct me.

yes, wahoomurf, the challenge is consistency. Right now, we know that Rode is inconsistent. We're not as sure about Burkinshaw as the data set's smaller.

From watching Rode over a number of years, I'm not surprised by the inconsistency; I'd predicted that he'd be challenged at the high college level given his technical deficiencies. But he's also capable of being electrifying. Great upside.

Two #1 rated tenders, back to back classes. Gotta get 50+% regularly out of someone.
Even if that means swapping them in and out when one is hot and one is not.

once you step on the field in the championship season (for scrimmage or game), you're no longer eligible for a non-medical redshirt. football now allows 4 games, but nobody else for now.

if you suffer a season ending injury/illness in the first half of the spring season, and have played < 30% of your spring contest dates, you are eligible for a medical redshirt. if you play @ all, you have to get maimed to get the year back.

It's apparently true that this will be the last UVa-JHU game for at least a while.

Quint noted in his IL Top 20 rating of JHU and, apparently, his podcast:
#WeWantMore plays Virginia is next (March 23, 6 p.m. on ESPN3). Unless further negotiations occur, these two teams will not play in 2020 — and that annoys me. Hopkins will renew with Navy but not Virginia. Fans love rivalries. You can't put a price tag on rivalries. We must preserve old-school rivalries in the face of conference loyalties.
No one on the JHU thread disputed what Quint had to say and none of their fans are expressing approval of the idea either. I guess Petro would rather play the Navals than us.
