Kirson is a proven failure.
Whenever the coach says for the benefit of the "program" you know there's some BS factor entering into the decision. Like, for instance, if we don't play this guy we won't be able to get any other kids to transfer. Who knows what factors go into their decisions, but this one is hard to fathom. I can recall another recent Hopkins coach who loyally stuck by his goalie right up until the day they unceremoniously pulled the plug on him.

Did he earn it or did the HC make a call on what was best for the program. What does that even mean? By all accounts Gib outplayed Kirson last weekend. So who earned what? Coach K has his guy. Re: Johns Hopkins 2022
A lot more confident compared to what? He played maybe a total of two minutes all of last season.
Shure played well today. Jax took several runs directly at him and I don't think he got cleanly beat once.
I wasn't paying much attention to individual matchups (and the white-on-blue unis made it hard to make out some numbers on the ESPN feed) but whichever one of our guys was covering Jax's Dolan (their leading scorer) must have done a good job because he double bageled on 6 shots.
QK could not stop praising Martin...probably a decent sign because he is often the first person to point out when our shorties stink.
Epstein will have better games. Should have had at least one but was robbed at the doorstep and then after that he started pressing. That said, he made a very important hustle play to get back in the hole and cut off a Jax transition opportunity that could have cut the deficit and swung momentum toward them.
Clearing was a debacle but a lot of that was because we had almost no clean saves. Much easier to get the ball up and out and moving downfield when it comes after a clean save but I think we had *maybe* one all game?

Re: Johns Hopkins 2022
Good advise.
Kirson was 50% for the game, I thought that was the goal this year.
Also, they shut down completely one of the top three SoCon
players.
Re: Johns Hopkins 2022
The box score wasn't a great reflection of the actual performance in cage.
Minus the one bad switch with Degnon caught on D behind the goal, the defense was fairly well organized and seemed to be communicating well. This is pure speculation but perhaps that had something to do with the decision who to start in goal. Maybe they feel that, especially early in the season, it's important to emphasize that aspect of goalkeeping. Who the hell knows. I would not rule out a change for next weekend or beyond that and PM basically said as much, that they might not identify the "right" guy immediately.

Not a strong day apparently (50%, and a soft 50%, against Jacksonville is not killing it), but I was on the golf course during the first half, so all I really "saw" were the stats and the running commentary on here. Can't comment on whether he was beaten by shots that should have been stopped or clearing etc. It was a cold day...no fun for tenders generally speaking.DocBarrister wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 9:10 pmI’m willing to wait and hear MDlaxfan’s expert opinion on Kirson’s play today.flalax22 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 9:02 pmDid he earn it or did the HC make a call on what was best for the program. Second half showed me little to go on.
If there's a place I could watch the first half, I'll do so and offer my opinion for what little it's worth. (link?)
Stepping back from any one game though, my initial assumption is that the coaches see what they see in practice and make the call based on who they think helps the team win in any particular game. I'd need a bunch of evidence to suggest they aren't doing so in this case.
That said, I'm a bit perplexed by whether there's an additional meaning to what you say Milliman put out there about helping the program...if that means playing someone because he has more seasons to contribute, that'd definitely bother me. (Play your best guy for this week, this half, period). But it may just mean that he's choosing the guy who he thinks gives them the best chance to win right now. And the comment above about running the defense might well be an important factor for game one.
So, I'll reserve judgment until I see more. And, of course, we don't know for sure what others can provide right now. I was thinking Versfeld might be the strongest, based on the commentary a fan had re # of goals and saves etc last week, but he's being clear that he may not have had it correctly. But it sure sounded like that was the case.
But I definitely agree that it's a big open question.
And coaches do sometimes err in these judgments.
BTW, was Webb dressed...or injured perhaps?

Game will be re-broadcast tomorrow morning. Set your DVR.MDlaxfan76 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 9:53 pmNot a strong day apparently (50%, and a soft 50%, against Jacksonville is not killing it), but I was on the golf course during the first half, so all I really "saw" were the stats and the running commentary on here. What does that even mean? By all accounts Gib outplayed Kirson last weekend. So who earned what? Coach K has his guy. Coach Annino has his. Marcille gets left out in the cold and Milliman makes the call. But I suppose Kirsons dad will come and tell me I’ve got it all wrong.wgdsr wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 8:57 pmcan your b.s. the guy earned the starting spot today. go kick your dog.Sagittarius A* wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 8:41 pmI don't expect Kirson to survive much past the Georgetown game. He'll get bombed and be out by halftime. If Gtown doesn't get him Loyola will. He was a stellar 2-7 last year and at this point it's obvious to everyone but our new coaching staff that he can't get the job done. Marcille took the team to the Big Title game. How hard is this to figure out? If they don't want to play Marcille, give GIB and chance and see what he can do.flalax22 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 8:12 pmBig difference between rooting against and offering commentary and making light of it at that. Where have we seen that before?
The Hopkins D has not played badly in front of him.

I know the stats and I have my opinion as a fan. I have watched Kirson’s performance on television. But I’m willing to hear from an expert who has played the game at the highest level and who has watched goalie play for pretty near half a century. Doesn’t mean his opinion will be gospel, but it would be really helpful to hear.

Re: Johns Hopkins 2022
I started watching the game in real time, paused to take the dog for his run through the woods in northern Baltimore County, and finished it on replay after watching the UVA-AF replay. Watch ESPN said the replay is available tomorrow at 10 am, but I got it this afternoon. I don’t know how any of this works if you are watching on cable tv, which I have never had. I just get HULU for the months of January through May and watch on the computer or phone.
I thought golf was a warm weather activity. Wind chill was below 20 around here this morning! Even the hound was glad to cut his run short today! Good on ya for taking the cold. I’m told it builds character, something I’ve never been accused of having in abundance.
