No real dog in this fight, but for what it's worth, MSM is no pushover. They have a good, talented team. They lost a few one goal games last year and return a lot of upperclass leaders. Probably have a good chance at the NEC crown this year.
IMO, the game was likely highly anticipated by MSM and a low-motivation trap game for Navy.
Navy 2022
Re: Navy 2022
I don't know how we define "pushover", but Mount was 6th in the NEC last year and have been a threat in the league one time in the last decade. They're not a top echelon NEC team by any metric and Navy was picked 4th in a significantly better league. Navy will probably get better and credit to the MSM goalie who stood on his head, but Navy is way more talented and should have wonkramerica.inc wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 4:29 pm No real dog in this fight, but for what it's worth, MSM is no pushover. Re: Navy 2022
A lack of motivation against a team that "finished #6" in the NEC last year may have led to some lack of focus and sloppiness, (2 "own goals") on Navy's party. That is the game right there.
On paper Navy has the better talent. At least according to IL's geniuses. But MSM was young the past couple years, and gave a lot of good teams close games over that time. Ask St Joes, UMBC and Hopkins who escaped with 1 goal wins over the Mount. MSM has some (now) upperclassmen who can ball.

Depleted is a kind way of describing that Del team. They were down like 6 starters.

I am going to get a 4.0 in damage.

Down seven starters with COVID and only had 24 players dressed for the game. I would say that is depleted.jrn19 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 5:11 pmThe entire attack unitFarfromgeneva wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 5:09 pm Depleted is a kind way of describing that Del team. They were down like 6 starters.

Re: Navy 2022
Think the answer is maybe MSM is a little improved (breaking in a new FOGO and graduated some talent last year) and Navy just is going to have a tough year even making the PL tourney. Especially if Lafayette is punchy. On the one had Warne was still rebuilding in Yr 3 on the other hand Amplo didn’t need (maybe he chose to) tear down this program.
But I do think competing for the NEC title is pretty aspirational for MSM. At best if LaCalandria is out for a bit maybe it opens the door for a spot in the conference tourney but most who follow feel like 3 spots are highly likely spoken for - until the games are played. (Bryant looks strong this year even relative to the last decade, SJU has some nice talent and Cole is back and Hobart has only missed it once since joining and has played pretty well in the early scrimmages having three that seems to be elevating optimism despite potentially being thin on depth at midfield).

Re: Navy 2022
I think it's a bit premature to proclaim the sky is falling. Bad losses in the first game of the season are not uncommon. I disagree with the notion that Navy wasn't as motivated to win.
Re: Navy 2022
That was a very inexperienced Navy defense & they looked it -- with 1 returning starter, & he's a soph who only played all 9 games in last year's truncated season.
That was a young, but somewhat more experienced offense (because so many played as underclassmen in the past 2 truncated seasons).
...& they looked it. They graduated their 4 year leading scorer & clutch playmaker. His spot has been filled by a promising fr who had 2 goals today. Arline could open all sorts of possibilities.
Amplo didn't tear down the program. He's reloading with former reserves he inherited & with freshmen.
The only top recruits who departed the roster went to the football team & one of them is back.
It looked like the Mids were going to take control when they went on a 4 goal run & went up 5-3, but credit the Mount for fighting back.
2 own goals & 3 unnecessary roughness penalties were self-inflicted wounds which were too much to overcome.
It looked like the Navy's middies' shots had lost some velocity &/or looked like beach balls to the Mount's goalie.
They were not hitting the corners or the edges. The Mount had a good scouting report & D scheme to frustrate Navy's shooters,
while Giblin was scoring from everywhere.
Good win for the Mount. They earned it, deserved it, & played 'til the end.

The MSM goalie,
his 1st start,
21 saves.
Large, 6 feet 200 lbs.
Good prep, Academy New Church.
Definitely someone to keep an eye on.

Re: Navy 2022
Amazing the "slack" being given....MSM had never beaten Navy. Where's all the coaching, or lack thereof, criticism? Stagnate offense, weren't prepared, turnovers, poor shots, 0-5 emo. First game for BOTH teams and MSM was on the road. Sugarcoat the loss any way you'd like, but this is one of the worst defeats in Navy lax history. Sowell's worst loss was a first game, away at Jacksonville(fwiw, Meade lost @ Jax in the 2nd game of 2012) and Sowell was hammered for not having the team prepared and poor body language on the sideline!!
