Kirson with a 42.9% save percentage today.
Where have we seen that before?
The Hopkins D has not played badly in front of him.

Why would Angelus not pass to Epstein in a two-man game?

I love McDermott but I have no idea why he's the designated clearing middie. Not exactly fleet of foot.

If you can’t handle an aggressive ride by a determined Jacksonville team, how are you going to handle a tough ride from Loyola or Virginia?

And one of those was a heave from midfield at the end of the half. Plus two that nicked him on the way to hitting the pipe. Struggling to remember a clean save.DocBarrister wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 1:53 pm Kirson with a 42.9% save percentage today.

Dunn and Martin are going to give us a chance all spring long.
Great goal for lilly
Keough came in strong
4 gbs and 6 cts for mcmanus and smith-nice start
Jacksonville was a credible opponent-good scheduling.

missed some time in the fall. but definitely looks a bit hobbled

Re: Johns Hopkins 2022
Immediate reactions?
Keogh and deso look stellar, could be a good 1-2 punch for this offense.
D looks so solid, notably ssdm. Big upgrade from basically nothing.
Offense shows some February rust as a unit. Epstein didn’t make the stat sheet, degnon not finding outside shots like he has. Not a lot of dodging. Angelus needs to be more involved as well.
Goalie play is a disaster. Marcille needs to start against Towson if we want to have a comfortable goalie against Georgetown.

Re: Johns Hopkins 2022
Survive and advance? Well, 1-0
Postives:
- Keogh. Happy for him.
- Close D and well-time/ aggressive slides. Especially in the second half
- Like the adjustment to go with more 2-man gamse from up top and wing in the 3Q. Those goals made the difference.
- Smith looked good at LSM, and Martin looks like the best SSDM we've had in a very long time.
Negatives:
- February
- Clearing. We kept running a shortie into the same box-side trap. No adjustments
- The effort on rides was poor
- Can't have that quality of goaltending in a D1 game

Best example ever of why save percentage is a misleading stat.wgdsr wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 2:11 pmhe finished .500 including those saves.primitiveskills wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 2:01 pmAnd one of those was a heave from midfield at the end of the half. Re: Johns Hopkins 2022
D really picked it up in 2nd half, winning GB battle 35-32 after starting 5-14. Plus, 11 CTs should make Doc happy.
Hats off to Jacksonville goalie whose 17 saves kept it close.

Re: Johns Hopkins 2022
So I guess that wasn't the best offense in the last two decades?
Kirson - did not appear to play well - you want your goalie to stop the last second shot from 12 or more - I don't like the early force on "hang-ups" - has given up more goals than just guarding cutters IMO but PM and JK are not trying to lose the game so there must be a reason he is out there. I am tired of getting outplayed at the goalie position.
Close D played OK
Dunn did well

Re: Johns Hopkins 2022
Liked the Blue Jays’ physically aggressive D (11 caused turnovers) and their good work on faceoffs.
Blue Jays really need to practice against aggressive rides. Just 75% on clears and their only solution seemed to be dodging through a triple team.
Offense looked better as the game progressed. Hopkins offense really needs to get Epstein more involved. I’m convinced Epstein is one of those players who needs to have a lot of touches to get into his groove. Certain players allowed the ball to die in their sticks (looking at you, Angelus). Career day for Keough. Grimes needs to stay in that third attack spot.
Kirson saved 50% today, but he did not look good. If Hopkins wants to beat teams like Virginia and North Carolina, they need a new man in goal. Jacksonville only put 16 shots on goal and made it a competitive game. A team like Virginia or North Carolina would have lit up the Jays for at least 14 or 15 goals.
A win is a win, but the Blue Jays have a lot of work to do and they need a new goalie.

Exactly. Two of his 'saves' were gimmes.flalax22 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 2:05 pmThat last one to close the game was clutch lolprimitiveskills wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 2:01 pmAnd one of those was a heave from midfield at the end of the half. Re: Johns Hopkins 2022
What strikes me as the main difference between Petro's D and Koesterer's D is that in the latter, the first slide is usually really well-timed, at the right angle, and (most importantly) leads to a double team to which they commit. In Petro's D, the first slide was often half-hearted and they almost always bailed on the double team, setting off a bizarre recovery scheme that often left the SSDM spinning aimlessly around the box. A lot of the CTs now are caused by opportunistic doubling, which is exactly what you want.Hoponboard wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 2:14 pm D really picked it up in 2nd half, winning GB battle 35-32 after starting 5-14. Re: Johns Hopkins 2022
- Keogh!
- DeSo picking up where he left off
- Smith is a menace. 3 CTs in his first real game
- Close D looked physical and wasn't making anything easy
- Martin is a future All-American
- Dunn more than held his own
- Offense was kind of bleh, but it's February, and they're still figuring things out
It was ugly at times but a win's a win, especially when it's like 15 degrees with the wind chill. Jax had 8 goals and 5 or 6 of them were either man-up, transition, the goalie playing out of the crease, or an offensive middie getting caught on D. In settled 6v6 sets with the right personnel out there I think the Jays only allowed a single goal, maybe two. Of course goals count the same no matter how they're scored but that was relatively encouraging for when they inevitably (hopefully?) clean up some of those other things.
