Would put Brennan in over Murphy. Should be fun to watch with all the optionsHopFan16 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 10:46 amWhere's he going to play even if he is on the team? Terps already have, at the very least, 9 guys who are likely to get playing time: Wisnauskas, Khan, Donville, Maltz, Long, DeMaio, Fairman, Murphy, Malever. That's already a full attack and two full midfield lines. And that's to say nothing of Spanos who I know you guys are excited about. (At this point we can probably assume Kelly, Brennan, Koras x2, Goforth won't play much, if at all, this year — barring several injuries ahead of them.) Not sure where Trader can find time except perhaps as a rotational 2nd line middie at best, especially since he wasn't with the team in the fall. Tough to make a big enough impression to the point where you're bumping one of those other guys out of their presumed spots.keno in reno wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 10:37 am is there any confirmation that Trader is actually practicing with the team? Re: Maryland 2022
Chatter I heard in the fall was they like Brennan. As for Murphy he still has 4 years of eligibility including this year. But who knows what Tills/Benson have going. This weekend’s scrimmage will give the first look. But it will be a guessing game because they will not be wearing their regular numbers.

They're very different players. Brennan is a classic, North American midfielder. Gets down the alleys. Great shot on the run or a step down. Murphy seems to have a lot more wiggle. Invert him behind the goal, iso him on the low wing. Given the position-less offense Tills started running in 2019, Murphy definitely fits that well. Brennan is bigger, though. They'd definitely trust him to get back on defense and hang in there against an offensive midfielder. Not sure you could say that at this point about Murphy. Give him a couple of more years in the S&C program and it's totally different.
Re: Maryland 2022
It doesn't really matter a whole lot that they're very different players specifically because of what you mentioned — the positionless offense. What does matter is that there is a finite number of guys who can realistically contribute in a given season and Maryland is already pretty much near the max, barring injury. Guys who are different can still compete for PT in an offense like this one, which is increasingly the norm in college lax. Time that either of them get is time that someone like Kelly or Koras or whoever isn't gonna get.Wheels wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 4:42 pm.HopFan16 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 4:00 pmMy money would be on the kid whom Benson recruited not once, but twice.AreaLax wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 3:47 pmChatter I heard in the fall was they like Brennan. Murphy is never gonna be a guy who gets back in the hole to play defense. I like him as a rotational attackman/EMO sniper/occasional 2nd line mix-and-match middie for you guys this particular season. Benson is going to find a spot for him. I'm not projecting beyond 2022.
Re: Maryland 2022
The COVID bonus year has just crushed so many younger players. Kelly is Wisnauskas's heir apparent. Koras played a lot last year (Brennan was out), but he's still behind Fairman and DeMaio. Then add in the bonus year grad transfers in Donville and Khan (Brown and Holden last year), and it's even harder to get more time. Could Tills stop recruiting the grad transfers? Sure. But no coach is going sit pat and not improve his roster when everyone else is doing the same exact thing.HopFan16 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 5:11 pmIt doesn't really matter a whole lot that they're very different players specifically because of what you mentioned — the positionless offense. And luckily for Towson, Maryland keeps developing their players for them! (Low blow, I know...I couldn't help it)

“Dante is not back yet. He’s still figuring out what he’s going to do. For him, football was a lot and trying to figure out — with the wear and tear he’s put on his body — what he can handle for the spring,” Tillman said.

Re: Maryland 2022
Next year makes some sense. Arline didn’t play his freshman year at Navy but is now joining the team this year in a similar situation
Re: Maryland 2022
If he is in line for starting safety position in the spring/next year, what does the calculation look like after a year of actually starting @ D1 football and a prospective NFL career path ahead? Not sure necessarily the same situation as Arline I think... and all Mids do athletics of some sort all year round as a requirement anyway no? Where he is all sports are just extra-curriculars anyway unless you're truly special for the NFL/NBA.

Re: Maryland 2022
Yeah his college lax career is likely over if he earns a starting spot on the football team in the fall. If he doesn't, my guess is at that point he'd decide to pivot back to lacrosse. Certainly does not sound like he's playing this season.Catbird wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 10:21 am If he is in line for starting safety position in the spring/next year, what does the calculation look like after a year of playing D1 football and a prospective NFL career path ahead? As much as Towson should be thanking you guys, you'll need to thank Villanova, at least for this season.

At this point Traders says he plans to play next year and Locksley is supporting him in play both sports.

Whoooaa, there's a wide chasm between starter on the University of Maryland football team and NFL prospect. But yes, he is in line to start next year. That's a pretty cool decision to have to make in college, good luck to him.Catbird wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 10:21 am If he is in line for starting safety position in the spring/next year, what does the calculation look like after a year of actually starting @ D1 football and a prospective NFL career path ahead? Re: Maryland 2022
Well whether he is a serious NFL prospect or not is way too early to say (you could say he is not a slam dunk NFL prospect at his age maybe like some guys are though), but at that point the dream is alive. If he starts and plays well, the opportunity will be there to atleast give it a shot. Certainly guys have come from more obscure spots to play in the NFL.

Went to the scrimmage. Great seeing the guys play. LW1 had a great game starting off with 4 in a row. Wheels says he will have a write up. Also looks like IL sent a writer to the scrimmage.

Re: Maryland 2022
I'm guessing he'd really like to play, but if he's beat up after playing backup safety this year, he'll likely be even more beat up if he is a starter. I'm expecting he'll never actually play for us, which stinks but is understandable he'd prioritize football over lacrosse. Football is his ride at Maryland after all.AreaLax wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 11:08 am At this point Traders says he plans to play next year and Locksley is supporting him in play both sports. To use these next months to prepare me for the fall: gaining weight, healing up, working on my techniques for football.
