Yeah, funny. I confess that the humor in any of this eludes me. Hey, democracy is faltering in the United States; I guess we should all be like Kramer and just pop a beer and sit back and say deep stuff, like "it is what it is." Your party has allowed Trump's fiction to bring electoral confidence to its knees, notwithstanding no evidence of wrongdoing; audits and recounts; dozens of court cases; and the fact that down ballot -- the same ballot -- GOP candidates did well. I love this country and the inheritance I received from the sweat equity and sacrifices of many, many others enough not to laugh about this stuff. Neither should you.

sc, are you a fan of mail-in voting? Hypothetically, when we have a handle on Covid, do you still want to have that option or even expand it?seacoaster wrote: ↑Tue Dec 21, 2021 8:57 amYeah, funny. I'll say yes. Mail-in voting worked super well in multiple states prior to the pandemic, worked super well during the pandemic. It makes it really easy to vote. I also really liked drop boxes rather than having to trust the USPS. I like the traditional feel of in-person voting, and don't personally have any issues with taking the time to do so, but was surprised at how easy and pleasant just dropping off my ballot was last year.
Mail-in is very trackable, with ID easily verified, one voter one vote, so I don't have any special concern about security. Paper trail and the voter can check to see if their vote has been added. Like in-person, it should require voter registration, but on this, too, I'm in favor of making this an easy to do process.
I'm also in favor of some early voting as well as the mail-in.
Have concerns about security of voting? Make sure there's a paper trail, always.
I want my party, which is still the GOP, to compete for the votes of all citizens rather than try to limit the voting of those they presume won't favor them. Right now the GOP's tactics are to try to reduce voting by populations that are poor and from minority groups of color, especially Black Americans. And that's fundamentally the opposite of my values and for that matter traditional Republican values.

Well, I've never voted blind party line anyway, though, until recently, my votes have been pretty darn predictable.PizzaSnake wrote: ↑Tue Dec 21, 2021 9:45 am“ I want my party, which is still the GOP, to compete for the votes of all citizens rather than try to limit the voting of those they presume won't favor them. ”MDlaxfan76 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 21, 2021 9:42 amNot sure how this question is responsive to the bolded above, or anything else in seacoaster's post.tech37 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 21, 2021 9:12 amsc, are you a fan of mail-in voting? Most of my voting life I've been in either Maryland or Massachusetts, so I've tended to skew towards wanting to support a two-party competitive situation in-state, and have nearly always voted R nationally when given a credible choice, though haven't always had such. (Might have affiliated the opposite way had I been someplace like say Alabama.) I have consistently voted for the local Dem congressman as I know him through other contexts and believe he's a good guy, relatively quiet, a worker not a horn tooter. But as the Dems dominated Congress early in my voting life, I again tended to vote R when in doubt simply to support a competitive situation.
Trump and Trumpism, and prior to that McConnell's stonewalling on SCOTUS, have made me much more likely to vote Dem than ever before.
My criteria have sharpened...first and foremost I won't vote for any R who is mealy mouthed or actually supports the Big Lie, who doesn't reject Trump and Trumpism. I'll vote for their opponent absent something even more egregious and I'm not sure what that would have to be. That reduces the potential R candidates to very few, but non-zero. I've also sharpened my view on anything having to do with racism, sexism, etc as well as any sort of medical misinformation or pandering to the conspiracy nut jobs.

Re: Conservatives and Liberals
Actually I agree on the issue of mail voting. I would have no problem with voting that way as I think the security has been proven many times over.
Combine that with the real reform needed - ending partisan gerrymandering - and you have a scenario where with balanced districts as much as possible the politicians have to be representative of a much larger fraction of the "other" side. And that moves their politics more toward the center and makes it much more likely that something gets done no matter who is in control.

Not surprisingly, the people who whine about absentee ballots never bother to take two seconds to google....and find out that all 50 States allows for absentee ballots. All of them.MDlaxfan76 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 21, 2021 9:42 amNot sure how this question is responsive to the bolded above, or anything else in seacoaster's post.tech37 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 21, 2021 9:12 amsc, are you a fan of mail-in voting? And of the 23 Republican controlled States? Not a single one of them has shut down absentee ballots. Not one.
Republican voters are simply incapable of understanding when they're getting played over a fake issue.
....but if you vote for them this time? Oh, they're gonna fix our broken immigration system, and.....what's the wording? Oh, right.....close our open border policies.
Oh, and they slipped on a banana peel the last time they were in charge, and "accidentally" made the government more than 50% bigger.
But sure. They're gonna shut down those absentee ballots. The Republicans are all over that. No. Really. They totally mean it this time.

Your party has allowed Trump's fiction to bring electoral confidence to its knees, notwithstanding no evidence of wrongdoing; audits and recounts; dozens of court cases; and the fact that down ballot -- the same ballot -- GOP candidates did well. I love this country and the inheritance I received from the sweat equity and sacrifices of many, many others enough not to laugh about this stuff. Neither should you.

Yeah, just for the record I didn't take tech's post to me this morning as a knock on my response. But it is true that MDLaxfan summed the issue up pretty accurately for me. If anyone wants to have a 2-way only conversation they would be advised to do so via PM. But otherwise, it's a public discussion and we're all 'in the room'. There's no "butting in" when we respond to one another's posts. Otherwise, we'd be accusing tech of 'butting in' on a discussion between youth and seacoaster...seacoaster wrote: ↑Wed Dec 22, 2021 7:47 amYeah, just for the record I didn't take tech's post to me this morning as a knock on my response. That said, tech's question seemed to me to be quite unresponsive to seacoaster's prior post and was instead intended as a deflection. But an interesting question, nevertheless.
If seacoaster wanted to add some nuance or disagree in some way to what I responded, or simply ignore it and reply more directly, he was entirely free to do so. My response certainly didn't prevent him from answering more fully, or differently, had he wished to do so.
And his response certainly gave you his personal answer, tech.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all.

Take a few minutes and read Peter King's story on his cross country trip with John Madden in late 1990. It's well worth your time
https://vault.si.com/vault/1990/11/26/b ... -on-wheels
Politicians and the rest of us could learn a LOT listening to John Madden ruminate on America. Fortunately for us, he lives on and we can/should still learn from what he said about so many things for all those years.
We should all take a few minutes and listen to John Madden talk about America...and all its regions and places that make it America.

Re: Conservatives and Liberals
I haven’t seen anything about this posted anywhere here today, although frankly I haven’t looked very hard. Here’s Rand Paul on how Dems steal elections.
“Seeding an area heavy with potential Democratic votes with as many absentee ballots as possible, targeting and convincing potential voters to complete them in a legally valid way, and then harvesting and counting the results”.
https://mobile.twitter.com/RandPaul/sta ... frame.html
Lunatic.
He just wants his types to be allowed to vote.
