Ross Dellenger @RossDellenger
On Friday, Ole Miss became the first to distribute academic bonuses. Funded by FB ticket sales, Rebs will spend $2.5M giving 415 athletes $6K each.
The qualifications? Be academically eligible. “Everybody is going to do it, for sure everybody in the SEC”

Dozens of schools around the country are also finalizing plans to begin distributing such checks to their athletes, some with stricter eligibility criteria. Just be eligible. The ACC, SEC, Pac-12 and Big 12 have all announced they plan to allow their schools the right to determine how to handle the NCAA vs. Alston ruling —a 9–0 Supreme Court decision in June that opened the door to these payments while rocking the governing body of college athletics and further cratering its amateurism model.

The high court’s ruling makes it possible for programs to offer an assortment of educational-related benefits, including unlimited graduate school, vocational and study abroad scholarships, paid internships, computers and equipment, and tutoring. And, of course, up to $5,980 in cash for “academic awards,” says Jeffrey Kessler, the victorious attorney in the Alston case.

The Rebels will spend $2.48 million a year in the additional payments for roughly 415 athletes, Carter says. This year, the payments are being funded through football season-ticket sales. With coach Lane Kiffin guiding the 12th-ranked Rebels to an 8–2 start, the university has generated more on ticket sales than expected and will use the excess revenue to fund the additional financial support to athletes. In the future, the school will include the payments as an annual budget line item.

Interesting to see how/if CLC responds here.

I don't believe there were any Covid cases on men's team. A ton of the guys did test positive for the flu last week though. There were a couple of Covid cases on the women's team last week however and with close contacts included meant quite a few girls had to go home for Thanksgiving early.
Good to know. Does that mean the school and or program is cancelling practices or workouts for the flu now?
No. The Turkey Bowl is just something the team does for fun. When half the men's team was sick with the flu and a bunch of the women's team had already gone home there wasn't any point in having the Turkey Bowl. It's not a real practice or workout. Those continued.

Maybe not but, flu vaccine is usually 60 to 70% effective. I was quarantined for a week on a ship in Antarctica with flu last February. I always get vaccinated!

Known as a M\med school . Believe it had a mandatory flu vaccination policy for all last year. Maybe they dropped mandate.

It was required to get at some point this fall. My daughter was scheduled to get last week but happened to be one of the ones to get Covid.(yes she's vaccinated). She thought she had the flu because the girls and guys had all been around each other the weekend before the guys all got the flu.

It's a college campus. Kids will get sick no matter how many vaccinations they have. If there's something going around the locker room then it's inevitable that some percentage of the team is going to go down with it.

Women's XC won its 7th national championship last week. Coach Van Allen has been at Hopkins for 22 years — I guess he missed the memo that Daniels was ruining JHU athletics. https://hopkinssports.com/news/2021/11/ ... title.aspx

Field hockey also made their first national championship final. Just one piece missing here.

Looks like a double header for both schools. Women teams are playing the same day at Hopkins

Too bad it can’t be a few weeks later.
Still.

I may have to drive down for that one.

Will probably feel like a loyola home game and be 70/30 greyhounds fans w/their students coming out in force. Absolutely expect quint to make note of it. Hopkins Student body interest has to be at an all time low. 2 win corona season. Coach fired. No fan corona season. Do the students even know where to sit?

Upshot will be you'll probably be able to hear cornell willis on every hopkins highlight.

Dates that are locked in:

1/29 at Denver (scrimmage)
2/5 vs. Jacksonville
2/11 at Towson
3/20 at Delaware
3/26 Homecoming vs. probably Michigan

Sounds like 2/19 might be home vs. Loyola but not confirmed. We know the dates of the B1G tourney and regular season games, just waiting on exact order and locations. So basically just waiting to hear about times/locations of Georgetown, Navy, UNC, Cuse, UVA.
2/19 is home vs Loyola...that is confirmed. Loyola opens up the week before at Maryland and the week after (2/26) host Rutgers at Ridley
Hearing the Cuse game is at @Hopkins. Don’t know the date. This makes since I am hearing that Maryland is playing @Cuse.

What should be a game about Hopkins tradition if this is true will be turned into carc doing 2 hours about syracuse. The cuse mafia at espn from on air to off air were already insufferable and with Gait's return coverage of this sport is going to be orange.

It's November. I have an idea: Why don't we NOT worry about what Carc is going to say on a TV broadcast 4.5 months from now?

Anyway, you're out of your mind if you think they're going to talk about anything other than Petro's return to Homewood Field. Gait will have coached at least 3-4 games already at that point. That storyline would very likely take a backseat to Petro, for the first time, patrolling the lefthand sideline if you're facing University Parkway or coaching against a team that's something like 75% comprised of guys he recruited.

I’m anticipating a warm welcome “home” for Coach Pietramala at Homewood Field.

While I agree 100% with '16 that the only topic that will consume the lacrosse world with respect to the Syracuse gane will be Petro (I honestly think sometimes '06 sits there and thinks "what outrageous and silly thing can I cook up today?) let's also not have delusions of grandeur - this isn't Brady going to Foxboro. Nobody cares. His former players will all bro hug him and that will be about it. Both teams will play hard and hopefully it will be a closer game than the last time Syracuse was at Homewood. I said a while ago it would be nice for the admin to do a hockey like Thank You video tribute but I am sure Petro is not holding his breath. Daniels and Baker will get crucified over it and Daniels will continue to remain in the crowd that doesn't care.

Hopkins students and their attendance is an interesting question - especially if Hopkins performance and results improve this season. Sophomore students have very likely not seen a game and Juniors had a couple opportunities in February and March of 2020 and given the 2,000 reported attendance at both the UNC and Syracuse games that year - most did not avail themselves of the opportunity. Does that contribute to the decline in interest or does absence make the heart grow fonder? Weather/technology/etc. will likely continue to produce their adverse effects.
