JJ Levandowski transferred (did he even enroll at SU) to UVM. McConvey is the UVM player transferring for 2023.
Got it thanks. I’ve seen McConvey a couple of times, nice player. Couldn’t recall Levandowskis name but he’s not bad either.

What year did Harvard have the #1 recruiting class, as ranked by who?

I recall some top 5 overly gushing reviews, just don't recall a #1 year.

I think they were seniors in 2016.

Levandowski left Syracuse after fall ball.

I think they were seniors in 2016.
That was my son's class, indeed an excellent group, including two in the top 10, both of whom were All-Americans subsequently. In addition to those two, they had 4 more in the top 100. (But no midfielders) 5 in that class were All-Ivy, including my son, who hadn't been ranked in the top 100.

But not the #1 class. Harvard was #4.
https://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/ ... sses/15228

UNC was #1, UVA #2, Duke #3.
UNC went on to win the title in 2016, with my son's HS teammate as one of the captains.

I think what gets confused is that because of a cheating scandal that grabbed up 100 kids the year before the 2016 class arrived, many of the prior year's class ended up graduating in 2016 with this class, so they were loaded, on paper, going into that year. The prior year, 2015, they'd been decimated by injuries, but were poised for a heck of a 2016, if everyone was healthy and on the same page, and they could win some FO's (Achilles heel was low GB's from midfield). Unfortunately, Wojcik replaced all the assistants and brought in a new crew, including an AHC who was actually angling to push Wojcik out and to take over the job; Wojcik indeed was a far better assistant himself than HC, so IMO his departure was very likely inevitable, but it was a real FUBAR situation...so, it certainly appeared that the AHC did everything in his power to sabotage 2016...and I mean, it was a real mess. Best FOGO and best tender on bench, both told by AHC mid-season that "your season is over"...best scoring midfielder pushed to 3rd string, other best scoring midfielder run into the ground as a 2-way, best defenseman moved to #3 LSM, because "you're the worst off-ball defender I've ever coached", only moved back to close when injuries forced the move, finished the season as an AA!...so bloody stupid...and Wojcik passively let him get away with it...Ahh well.

They went downhill from there, with much worse locker room issues the following year.

Not following; that was IL with that "ranking"...and I'm certainly on record that I don't think they get those right, beyond the top 10, maybe 20, each year as very likely, if healthy, to be strong contributors wherever they go. Beyond that it's a crapshoot.

That said, they even whiff in the top 10. UVA for instance had the #1 incoming tender that year, ranked 8th overall recruit all positions, but as it turned out, I don't think he was in the top 10 tenders for that particular class. Maybe not top 20. Happens.

I wish Sammy Davis had killed it so we could’ve had all sorts of discussions referencing the singer.

This is a good list to pick because it was supposed to be a pretty good class for Hobart. Miller transferred to OSU and didn’t play much. Graham transferred to D3 maybe Lynchburg or another VA-mid Atlantic school. There was a kid from Landon who was highly ranked as a Jr named Matt Opsahl who was solid but quit his senior year. So clearly after 20-30 it’s “who knows”

Happens.
IL = Ivy League.
Ahhh, yes, it was the #1 class in the League that year.
And in that grad year, they lost the Final to Yale in the ILT.

As I've said, I think they squandered that year's potential very, very badly...and I think that was actually on purpose, crazy as that sounds. The pattern was playing sophomores over seniors (from both 2015 2nd year and 2016 natural) as much as possible, begun pre-season, regardless of capabilities and commitment. It also didn't help that they selected captains from the 2015 second-year seniors, none from the class of 2016. The team didn't think the voting was actually used, coaches put their thumb on the scale. Mismanagement...or worse.

As I also said, as bad as those locker room-coaching dynamics were, they were even worse the following year. Outright revolt. It was no surprise the coaches all eventually got canned, starting with the AHC and OC, notwithstanding the sugar coating the school put on it as they got pushed out.

All that said, the big Achilles heel over those years was midfield GB production. Starting at X, but not just X. Basically, they recruited highly ranked classes, but very few highly athletic midfielders by comparison. Lots of attack. For instance, in that 2016 class there were 4 top 100 attack, 2 defensemen. So, they played many of those highly ranked attack as midfielders given the excess...and the lower ranked, but athletic, midfielders often saw far less time. Put enormous pressure on the defense and goalies, given first possession advantages.

By example, in 2015, vs Cornell they had to overcome a 17-6 FO disadvantage, and 40-30 GB's overall, 39-30 shots, to win 10-9.

And against BU that year, 16-5 FO disadvantage, 33-23 GB disadvantage, 43-33 shots, to win 9-8.
And of those 23 GB's, 15 were picked up by long sticks, and only 5 by midfielders including FOGO.

And those games were played without two AA defensemen, injured early in season.

Back to UVA, IMO, a huge part of Hoos' success has been having midfielders and FOGO who can and do go heads up vs any team and come out close or on top in GB's.

Devin Dwyer was excellent, BTW.

Happens.
IL = Ivy League.

Yes, very much so! Not a go to goal guy, but tremendous stick and intelligence. And a big moment player again and again and again.

This example at end of game was one of ohh so many...video tells the story...https://gocrimson.com/news/2015/4/6/4_6_2015_6354

Duvnjak was first rate as well. Busted shoulder knocked him out of 2015.

He's the one I was referring to who was told by the AHC a week before the season, "You're the worst off-ball defender I've ever coached" as he was relegated to 3rd line LSM. Only went back to close D when others got injured...and then had an AA senior season... as my son would say, "gotta let Bobby be Bobby". Very, very disruptive on-ball. That could create some chaos, but his teammates knew to anticipate his aggressive play.

UVA fans will recognize the Mencke name in that video, with the freshman scoring for Harvard...he's one of the midfielders I thought should have seen way more time during his tenure. Had the athleticism (Highland Park championship football d-back in Texas) to be an outstanding SSDM...but rarely saw the field.

I remember that…..Duvnjak was an excellent player. You need a guy like that. A tone setter. A lot of excellent defenders during that time.

I wish Sammy Davis had killed it so we could’ve had all sorts of discussions referencing the singer.

This is a good list to pick because it was supposed to be a pretty good class for Hobart. Miller transferred to OSU and didn’t play much. I don't know the whole story, but most of his minutes were as a freshman, not on team as a senior.

https://virginiasports.com/sports/mlax/ ... an-marino/

2013 55 GA, 46 SV, 45.5%; split time with Heller, 48.2% with Heller playing more

2014 5 GA, 1 SV, 16.7%; but Barrett played most of the minutes, 46.7%

2015 3 GA, 5 SV, 57.1%, but Barrett played most mins, 53.8%

2016 suspended for first 3 games, then Marino not on team, Barrett 47.6%

2017 Barrett kicked off team, Thompson 48.8% Railey 43.4%

2018 Rode 49.3%, Thompson 46.9%

2019 Rode 50.6%, Burkinshaw 59.3% but Rode most minutes and NC
