As to why the RW media pushes the "freedom of choice issue." There is no medical or ethical reason to oppose vaccination for the vast majority of people. But then again that is the raison d'etre for most of the RW media (opposing Ds and making Rs mad so they vote).JoeMauer89 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 10:25 amAs far as you can tell? That is the point. Getting enough vaccinated makes the pandemic at least turn into an endemic disease.
You have RW media types like Tucker Carlson (who is vaccinated) pushing the "freedom of choice" of NOT getting vaccinated as a means of damaging the pandemic response to allow the RW to blame Biden and the current administration as far as I can tell...
That makes the effort difficult at best.

How about... if we understand how this happened, right down to what occurred on a molecular level, this can be avoided in the future. You actually don't understand this? Unfortunately (so far) without China's cooperation we can't be certain. With total transparency it can be shown that the pandemic was caused by human manipulation in the lab or not. If so, GOF or any similar research can then be banned worldwide and the next worse pandemic may not occur.
But this originated in China, right? Bat, lab, whatever.
If (if) we can figure out where it come from, and we want to stop it from happening again.....
How do you propose that we get China to do what we want them to do? They haven't done as the global community has asked for.....decades, right?
So what's your plan?

this is the kind of rollicking debate that can break out on a moment's notice on the cov2 thread!! here, here!
but the mutations on delta, which are common, have one that has been getting some notice just recently after making what looks like a real run in the u.k. check out the rise in % sequenced cases in the chart from outbreak.info :
https://www.newsweek.com/delta-ay-varia ... uk-1639842
and the u.k. is now doing some real spiking on cases. they famously "opened up" a bit ago, but they also have a great deal more vaxxed than we in the u.s. do. and maybe semi-soon a greater # of deaths per capita per day. also international travel loosens up i think in a couple weeks here at home.
the sciencey guesses for now around "delta plus" put any greater transmissibility or vaxx escapism at ~+10% vs delta vs the big jumps alpha and delta had. though the plus working up the charts in the u.k., if it continues apace, might come up with some new estimates once they have more data.
doubtful. delta's carrying well over 99% of the load right now in the u.s..Farfromgeneva wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 10:59 am Thought I overheard in background this am that there’s a new variant that he caught. Dammit if true.

Well, we already know that about China. The way they are behaving is the same way they've been behaving for decades now.kramerica.inc wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 3:53 pm But there is something significant to knowing which countries can and can't be trusted, and which countries regularly act carelessly or maliciously. Well, not to put too fine of a point on it....but I told you chaps before Trump's (and now Biden's) fake trade war with China: what you are asking for is to start a Cold War.kramerica.inc wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 3:53 pm It's not just potentially releasing the Coronovirus. Personally? I think we should have started one with Russia the minute they were caught messing with our elections. Instead? We did nothing.
And I told the board that China wouldn't change a thing in Trump's fake trade war. Now here we are, 4 years later, and not only has China not changed their behaviors.....our Trade Deficit with China is at record levels. He made things worse, not better. You know all those container ships parked along our Pacific Coast? Where do you think all of they came from?
So I ask you the same question I asked Tech: Say we find out the virus came from a lab. What's the plan? Our choices are:
1. ignore this behavior, as we have for 30 years+
2. start a Cold War with China, and kick out all Chinese visa holders, including students
3. spend some money and infrastructure so that we stop buying goods from China, and make these goods ourselves and/or buy from reliable allies.
4. continue our fake trade war that has done NOTHING to change their behavior. Essentially, #1, except Americans pay more for some Chinese goods. Not helpful.
My money is #1, because that's what the 1%ers want.

Is there some mystery about that?
News to me, and news I suspect to most of us on here.
But you gotta look at what's in their best interest, as they see it and how they see their place in the world, to better predict what actions to expect and what not, and indeed how to influence them in ways that serve our interests as well.
For instance, it would be batsh-t crazy, forgive the pun, to "release" a deadly virus on one's own population, to what, let it spread worldwide from there?
Nah, not buying that.
They act in their own self interest, and they're not batsh-t crazy.
Plenty to be concerned about from China, including poor safety controls in labs and with wild animals caught for all sorts of purposes, but purposefully infecting the world with a deadly virus ain't on the menu.

There's been some of that on these threads today, but no penalties imposed.

Whose feelings are being hurt? Who is being trolled?
Unless someone on here is friend, family etc of this coach who decided to not get vaccinated, who is being hurt?

What’s a troll?
A troll is Internet slang for a person who intentionally tries to instigate conflict, hostility, or arguments in an online social community. ... Trolls often use inflammatory messages to provoke emotional responses out of people, disrupting otherwise civil discussion.
“You’re racist. He’s a prick. Right wingers are pricks.”
Sounds awfully familiar to the crap someone else around here spews. The guy who’s always in fanlax jail.
But Doc agrees with Matnum’s political views so he gets a pass.
