Duke 2022
Re: Duke 2022
Duke is catching up real quick.
They’re behind only Hopkins Orange Terps Cavs
in tournament wins.
Assuming they’re the odds on favorite to win it all,
that would give them more national titles than the
Terps.
Teams like the Cavs and UNC are really going to have to
pick it up, to keep up.

Re: Duke 2022
Recently, it seems UVA has gotten far more out of their roster than all the others listed. The light is shining bright on the staff now, IMO.
A player does not make 'the' team....Duke had arguably the best attack line in 2021 (so says all the announcers and IL) with the #1 ranked player on the left wing, JR on the right wing. and the transfer of Sowers running qb, and they could only put up 5 on the Terps and squeaked by Loyola.
Their midfield could just not break through and that too appeared to be a lack of x's and o's....b/c the talent was there. ANd for the life of me...I still have no idea how #11 ended up playing SSDM the entire 5 years....they lost out on some high level offensive midfield from a great ambidextrous shooter. I remember watching him at GP and during the UA games.

A fraudulent intent, however carefully concealed at the outset, will generally, in the end, betray itself.

Re: Duke 2022
Not really, for all their talent there will still only be one ball. UVA and UNC just needs to field a starting lineup as talented. Which they do already. It doesn’t really matter on gameday how many 5 stars Duke has of they’re riding the bench.10stone5 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 5:05 pm Duke is catching up real quick.

Re: Duke 2022
Where would you rank this team nationally preseason? Might be the most talented roster in the country but UVA, UNC, and CUSE won't be pushovers. Losing sowers will hurt. Gotta say though, looking at the roster the depth is still not great.
Re: Duke 2022
Is there a team in another sport that is consistently a title contender year after year, and yet still has exactly 0 fans?
Re: Duke 2022
I created a spreadsheet (for a completely unrelated purpose) where I list all the top teams and their rankings by year where the most recent year (2021) has a power of 100%, the previous year (2020, in theory but there was no 2020 so 2019) has a power of 90%, the previous year (2018) has a power of 80%, etc. until the year has a power of 10% and then every year before this (going back to 2005) also has a power of 10%. Anyway, with this system, these are the Top teams in D1 men's lacrosse. Keep in mind, winning a Championship and being #1 is great but having a down year where you're ranked #26 or whatever hurts. Anyway, there are several surprises...

Re: Duke 2022
Were there any?
I'm not just talking about a lack of message board commentators, though that does seem to be a microcosm for a broader lack of support. No one goes to Duke games, even when they're one of the best teams in the country, which is often. In 2020 they averaged less than 1,000 fans per home game despite a good team and optimal early spring weather in Durham when the majority of other D1 teams are playing in snow or freezing temps. In 2018, the last time they appeared in a title game, they finished 14th in attendance (which is good for them), well below most other ACC and B1G teams and, yes, that includes Hopkins which finished 6th. Admittedly Duke did a lot better than Carolina in attendance that year though that's not always the case.
So, again, I ask, what other perennial title contenders have so little evidence of an actual fan base?

Re: Duke 2022
Last fall Duke split their players into teams and had a competitive league which allowed some of the players to act as coach or general manager. I think it was new for them. Danowski and his staff seem to get creative with how they approach fall ball. Are they doing that again this fall? I wonder if they think that might've limited the chemistry between certain players.
Another question...I'm guessing Lulley is now the attackman at X flanked by Robertson and O'Neill. Since the expectations aren't as huge for Lulley and the Duke team as they were with Sowers last season, will this help with chemistry at all?
Duke has a million top 50 IL recruits on their roster listed as midfielders. They try to play them all. Will they find a way to develop chemistry with all those players while rotating so many into the game?
I don't know if Duke still broadcasts their fall coaching clinics. I used to watch those when I was coaching. Ron Caputo was great at explaining things and giving reasoning for doing things a certain way. He seemed like a good teacher. Matt Danowski was new to coaching at that time and I found him to be less effective at communicating to the audience than his dad or Caputo. John Galloway was there one year and he also struggled to communicate. He and the young Danowski seemed nervous and would speak really fast and were difficult to understand sometimes.

Re: Duke 2022
Only for the past few years. For 2005-2017, (I'm 90% sure) it's LaxPower. Then and now, I didn't love the LaxPower rankings (e.g. In 2015, Notre Dame lost in the semis and they finished the season #1. I don't like that.) but, though they were off, they were never far off. So i went with it.
