I wouldn't necessarily agree with the no contest idea. As you say a win over the former #1.
In a season, where everyone seems to be beating everyone else, if Maryland beats Notre Dame this weekend to go 6-0, over all decent teams, there would be a rationale for putting Maryland at #1.

Maybe Tillman will reconsider playing Towson...now that the Tigers play a good enough schedule. ;)

I don't fully remember why Maryland dropped Towson. I think it was something about Tillman wanting to restructure his schedule and make Towson a mid week game, and Towson being unwilling to go along with the idea.
The last time Towson and Maryland played was 2011, a few years before Maryland left the ACC after 2014.

Preston: Maryland fails to make a case in dropping Towson from lacrosse schedule

This is what I remember -
The Terps also have been privately saying they wanted to upgrade the caliber of their opponents because strength of schedule had become so important in selecting the tournament field and seeding the teams.
So, Maryland thought about dropping UMBC and canceled Towson to add a super power like Hartford, which plays in the weak America East Conference (the same as UMBC)? And then they added another rising power like big, bad Marist, which plays in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
According to Nadelen, Tillman said the two teams might be able to play again, but it would be on a yearly basis. "They're trying to go year-to-year with us and trying to figure out what works best for them," said Nadelen. "That's something that I don't want to be a part of. I want the Maryland-Towson rivalry game to be a consistent thing. It's not going to be a year-to-year thing. If he wants to play us, then he can play us."
Coach didn't remember either.... ;)
Tillman says he doesn't remember that conversation.

i dunno. maryland had beaten them at least 12 years in a row, though many games were close.
seems reasonable that lacrosse can be played mid-week inside of an hour drive to each other. umbc was willing to move, so they kept that game at the time, and were able to add villanova there.
originally the towson weekend was curiously a down stony brook after the one off with marist. then princeton. the towson game eventually became albany, so it's worked out ok.
but obviously not for "the rivalry".

villanova and albany don't happen mid-week without it being more of a tax with the travel. (albany and maryland rescheduled a postponed game for mid-week not long ago -- because they both were strong squads and were probably compelled by the rpi).

in general, i don't have much sympathy for schools who don't want to play mid-week. especially when it makes sense from a geographic standpoint. i wouldn't be laying all of this at tillman's feet. nadelan had the option to play, and declined.

Unfortunately, I have read my 3 articles on the Sun for the month, so I can't read that one
There was a time, just 10 years or so ago, when few games were broadcasted and having games with Towson, Georgetown, and UMBC were one could go to them home and away was important. Nowadays with almost every game being on the internet, this seems less important.

DU has 5 game road gauntlet in March. At UNC, ND in California, OSU, Princeton and Towson on same road trip during spring break. 3-2 locks up NCAA at-large bid pretty much.

According to comments he made at the time, Tillman didn't like trekking up to New Haven for a cold weather early season matchup against the Bulldogs, feeling that it didn't really benefit his team, who I believe lost the last two regular season games that were played there.

One might also note that with the increasing strength of the Big Ten, that the need to play Yale to help the SOS was mitigated.

I don't know that it seems particularly weird. How many instate opponents does UMd play in basketball?
Loyola wasn't really a regular on UMd's schedule in the more recent past (after 1960). Having JHU, Navy, Towson, and UMBC on the schedule seemed like quite a number of local opponents. Maryland also had Georgetown on the schedule from (2003-2012), and Maryland also occasionally played MSM. Maryland did play Loyola in 2013 and 2015, and their was some hope that that would become a regular game.

Loyola does have an full schedule being in the Patriot League and it might be tough to find a date. Also, Tillman and Toomey are supposedly friends off the field and might prefer not going head-to-head.

Tillman seems to like to have road games in Philadelphia and New York where he gets a lot of recruits. UNC is a long time rival, and has a lot of national attention. Notre Dame has a lot of national attention too. Maryland sometimes will play UNC or ND out on the West Coast.

Rather than Loyola, I would rather see the Georgetown series re-instated as Georgetown is the other DC-area team. I think this would be good for DC-area lacrosse.
