Just saw that Maryland's Jack Sawyer is in the portal. Looked like a really good player at Calvert Hall a couple years back.

Terpland really is a meat grinder. When you sign up to play for Tills you have to just assume that if you are not playing by your freshman year, you're not going to play any of your remaining years. Tills is ruthless in his pursuit of talented transfers and is not going to change that philosophy. "Be the Best" is what you sign up for.

If you are not the best, you can always break out the pom poms and contribute to the sideline mosh pits. But for 4-5 star HS All-Americans, that is a little tough to take. Avanzato found salvation at Towson and Pallonetti at Stony Brook. Hopefully, Sawyer and Co. find landing places where they can contribute. Hate to see talent like that withering away on the bench.
That storyline is kind of BS. Josh Coffman is playing at an all-american level now, and he rode the pine as a freshman. Rahill got in like 4 games. Chase Cope. Luke Wierman. That's 4 from this year's team alone. Then there's guys like Zawadski, Masci, Giblin, Welding, even Bryce Young was slow to appear his freshman year; Will Snider, O'Connell, Chisolm, Nick Manis was a huge part of the national championship...
This argument is kind of BS. Bryce Young played in 12 games as a freshman and Josh Coffman played in 7 games. They were not sitting on the bench with pom poms.

You have your own arbitary definition of holding pom poms, so it's kind of a pointless argument.

Sawyer played in 5 games as a red-shirt freshman and had a goal.

Sawyer’s 5 games were garbage time minutes of blow out wins.

If the hypothesis that if you don't play as a freshman or sophomore is true, every non-playing freshman and sophomore would transfer. That doesn't happen. Often, these transfers have more to do with off-field or locker room issues than playing time issues.

It’s not just some schools, I have found that if you don’t see real time by end of soph year, you probably won’t as upperclassmen. Yes of course there are exceptions but this is why so many kids quit, most freshman classes are 12-15 and Senior day you will see about 8-10. Some stick around to be part of program others won’t. 45 man rosters about 23 actually play, it’s math.

This MD kid redshirted in 2020, saw an all-time great A return for a fifth year due to the COVID rule, and then sees Khan come in as a fifth year. Yes perhaps there are other issues, but the PT issue is likely a key one. The handwriting is on the wall.

Perhaps one sticks it out at an Ivy type school, but I doubt that a UMd can keep a guy based on the educational aspect alone. There are many peer academic schools with more PT available for a very good player.

For this particular one, yes. But people are making tons of generalizations about kids leaving because they're being recruited over. Very few spots on any team are guaranteed. Coaches bring in players every year, even freshman, hoping that the new players are better than the current players.

true that - if you look at every transfer you will see a different story and while playing time is certainty one of them.

Kids that realize they will not be getting playing time in the future yet do not transfer realize that there is so much more the college than playing time. some kids actually love the team and teammates, others love the school and you always have the social aspect. another big reason that a kid not playing might stay at a school is that the coach is still honoring the scholarship and they would not get the same package at a new school. "Should I stay or should I go?" is a personal decision and you can not generalize.

I think parents and kids understand if they commit to a top 20 school you will be competing against 4/5 star kids. and you look and see who is on the roster when are certain kids graduating and who is committed to what school. But now you have to worry about 5 star 23 year old AA kids transferring in. I would not let my kids commit to Marlyland or Rugters.

I respectfully disagree, 11th graders that are asked to commit to Maryland are 15-16 year old kids that are the best of the best and they do not believe anybody is better than them and they believe that they are going to be 4 year starters, it is the nature of beast, and without that confidence they probably would not have become good enough to have been offered an opportunity to commit to Maryland to begin with.

This MD kid redshirted in 2020, saw an all-time great A return for a fifth year due to the COVID rule, and then sees Khan come in as a fifth year. Yes perhaps there are other issues, but the PT issue is likely a key one. The handwriting is on the wall…

At this point they should change the motto to “Be the 2nd Best.” Much more accurate.

who wasn't home grown from last year's starters? wisnauskas years ago? a d guy from marquette?

their big transfers on o were 2nd or 2 1/2 line?

young goalie beat out a reputable transfer?

umd's been taking multiple transfers for years. nothing new.

edit: a jab at losing in the finals? if that's what it was, they get in the arena. my opinion.

It was more a playful jab at UMD repeatedly falling just short of a championship, not a knock on their recruiting tactics. I don’t know why people are up in arms about the Terps bringing in and losing transfers. Of all teams, Maryland is the one who has been consistently aggressive in the transfer market PRE Covid. Unlike Rutgers or ND, this isn’t a sudden change.
