Some excepts from DENVER RISES 15-6 OVER FIRST-YEAR PROGRAM UTAH
FEBRUARY 23, 2019 SASHA KANDRACH

https://letsgodu.com/author/kandrachsasha/

The No. 8-ranked Pioneers struggled to find a consistent rhythm and committed senseless errors that troubled the coaching staff but still managed the victory.

“I’m bewildered by this team,” coach Tierney said candidly postgame. “That’s what I told them in the locker room. You see five-minute spurts of what could be greatness. But then you see dumb, selfish, soft things going on out there. We’re trying to put our finger on it. We’re working hard. We’ve got older guys and younger guys — we’ve got to remember that we’ve even got some older guys out there who haven’t played much for us before — but even so, we’re not getting that flow or synch going.

“Credit to a team like Utah for coming out and playing hard. It’s a first-year program.”

Denver had eight different goal-scorers, headlined by hat trick performances from junior Ethan Walker and freshmen Drew Erickson and Ellis Geis. Sophomore midfielder Jack Hannah dished a team-high three assists.

After displaying a tremendous effort and ultimately falling 10-9 to Duke last weekend, this weekend playing an NCAA newcomer required a different mindset but demanded the Pioneers hold themselves accountable. “The biggest thing we determined going into the weekend was that you have to respect your opponent,” senior captain Colton Jackson said. “It doesn’t matter who you’re playing, but you if you respect them you’re going to play your best. It was a little different than usual today with Utah because we didn’t know much about them since it’s their first year. So, we just had to focus on ourselves and focus on what we do best to win.”

Despite the winning result, coach Tierney was dissatisfied by the overall effort put forth by his team and seemingly senseless mistakes made. Similar to Denver’s season opener against Air Force where the Pioneers scored 11 goals on 49 shots, DU scored 15 goals on 43 shots today. On the man-up, the Pioneers only converted once on five attempts. Denver committed 20 turnovers and struggled in its transition game.

It wasn’t the cleanest effort put forth by the Pioneers who faced an incredibly young (34 freshmen), inexperienced Utah squad, but Denver’s youth rose to the occasion. Freshman midfielder Alex Simmons scored two highlight-worthy goals, after notching a clutch game-tying goal in the last 19 seconds of play last weekend against Duke. “I think the biggest thing for us offensively, is trying to get guys to buy into the system,” Jackson said. “It’s a process because the younger guys are used to doing everything themselves in high school and that doesn’t always work here in college. But I think today you saw guys like [Simmons], [Geis] and [Erickson] all buy into coach Brown’s offense and they were successful.”

Fortunately, Denver excelled today at the X. Freshman faceoff specialist Brett Boos went 21-for-25 for the day and was 14-for-14 to start the second half. “[Brett] did really well for us today,” coach Tierney said. “And we’ve got another good one coming in for us next year. So, we feel really good about that.”

Denver’s defense displayed a steady performance, despite missing starter junior Colin Squires who missed the game with a lower-body injury. Senior LSM Brett Greenlee filled Squires spot and excelled alongside seniors at close defense Dylan Gaines and Dylan Johnson. “The good news is defensively I do think we played really well,” coach Tierney said. “I think that first group out there makes it difficult for the other team to score.”
Alex Ready made 10 saves through the first three quarters before being replaced in net by sophomore Josh Matte. Matte made one save in his 12:47 of action.

Denver turns around tomorrow to face a skilled and vengeful Cleveland State team who surged a late rally but lost 11-8 to Air Force earlier today. “It’s frustrating knowing you have to turn around and play a team tomorrow that has everything to gain and nothing to lose,” coach Tierney said. “We’re expecting a lot of energy from them and a lot of pent up frustration from them today. Hopefully, we’ll play better and be a little more mindful of things when we have the ball.”

There were a few bright spots: Boos at the X, Greenlee capably filling in for Squires, 6 on 6 defense and 10 saves for Ready (as previously mentioned). But in terms of the most basic fundamentals -- throwing, catching, and scooping ground balls -- this may have been the worst game I've seen in the entire Tierney era. Not sure what they're doing offensively (especially on EMO), but it sure doesn't look like the Matt Brown style of quick, crisp passing we've grown accustomed to. I'm hoping the flow will improve when Austin French returns and they have a natural distributor back in the lineup.

We'll need to pick up our game tomorrow, and certainly next week when we really need to bag a win vs. a quality opponent...

Drew Erickson, San Ramon Valley high school, Danville California. His first goals of what will hopefully be a productive Denver career.

Pete Worstell, who played at Maryland back under lacrosse legend Buddy Beardmore, started up this lacrosse program from scratch in 2001. The Tierneys were among the first coaches to attend Worstell’s Be The Best lacrosse camps here in Danville, back maybe 10 years ago. Tambroni was another.

Now, Division 1 players regularly come out of this program, players who can really contribute.
Austin French is one. Drew Erickson, hopefully Cole French will be another, and Quinn Marquez who is coming on next year. All four won a CA state title on the same team, and now they’re teaming up for the Pios, that’s unusual.

Michael Tagliaferri came out of San Ramon, was the first player from that school to garner national attention, was All American and won a National Title with North Carolina.

Nice pipeline of talented lacrosse players.

After a rough first half, Denver finished strong with much better passing and shooting.

Ethan Walker is officially back and playing like the Ethan Walker that we all know. Coming into the weekend, he only had 1 goal over the first two games. He had 5 goals and 2 assists today. He had 8 goals and 4 assists this weekend.

Today's scorers:
Ethan Walker 5 G, 2A
Ellis Geis 2G, 2A
Alex Simmons 2G, 1A
Jack Hannah 1G, 1A
Riley Curtis 2A
Colin Rutan 2G
Colton Jackson 1G
Sam Dwinell 1G
Danny Logan 1A
Kyle Smith 1G
Johnny Marrocco 1G

Offensive stat summary by class
Freshman 6 G - 3 A - 17 Shots - 35% Goals/Shots
Sophomore 1 G-3 A - 7 Shots - 14% Goals/Shots
Junior 6G - 3 A - 10 Shots - 60% Goals/Shots
Senior 3G - 0 A - 7 Shots - 43% Goals/Shots
Total 16 - 9 A - 41 Shots - 39% Goals/Shots

Juniors and Seniors outscored the Freshman & Sophomores for the first time.

A bit concerning that the Sophomores did not score on many of their shots. Sophomores scored twice this weekend on 16 shots. Glad that the other team mates were able to find the back of the net.

Alex Ready was great in the net today and yesterday. Alex had 9 saves on 16 shots on goal today.

Defense was strong today as usual.

Nice review of the game by Denver, highlighting some of the excellent defense.

Excellent Defensive factoids:
  • 16 caused turnovers as a team in the game tied for the fourth-most in a single game in Denver's Division I history
  • Dylan Gaines had a career high five caused turnovers, good for a tie for fifth in Denver's single-game history, to go with four ground balls
  • Dylan Johnson forced a career-high four turnovers (ninth in DU's DI single-game history) and scooped up three ground balls
  • Matt Neufeldt with 2 CTs, forcing two to go with five ground balls
  • Danny Logan picked up five ground balls and forced a turnover to go with his first assist of the season
  • Alec Barnes added four grounders in the defensive effort
  • Gaines moved into third in caused turnovers in Denver's DI history with 46, passing Christian Burgdorf and Mike Riis
  • Johnson moved up into seventh with now 32 caused turnovers, good for seventh in DU's DI history

DENVER – The [8/9] University of Denver men's lacrosse team used a 12-5 second half to pull away from Cleveland State 16-8 on Sunday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

Denver's defense was the key to a 4-3 halftime lead. The Pioneers 16 caused turnovers as a team in the game tied for the fourth-most in a single game in Denver's Division I history, and the most in a game since causing 21 turnovers against Vermont in February of 2011.

Senior Dylan Gaines (Baltimore, Md.) had a career high five caused turnovers, good for a tie for fifth in Denver's single-game history, to go with four ground balls, while classmate Dylan Johnson (Englewood, Colo.) forced a career-high four turnovers (ninth in DU's DI single-game history) and scooped up three ground balls. Redshirt-senior LSM Matt Neufeldt (Naperville, Ill.) was the other Pioneer with multiple CTs, forcing two to go with five ground balls. Junior SSDM Danny Logan (Upper Arlington, Ohio) also picked up five ground balls and forced a turnover to go with his first assist of the season. Junior Alec Barnes (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) added four grounders in the defensive effort.

On the career charts, Gaines moved into third in caused turnovers in Denver's DI history with 46, passing Christian Burgdorf and Mike Riis. Johnson also moved up the charts into seventh with now 32 caused turnovers, good for seventh in DU's DI history.

Senior Alex Ready (Lancaster, Pa.) finished with nine saves, including four in the first quarter in the Pioneers victory.

On the offensive side junior Ethan Walker (Peterborough, Ontario) passed both Eric Law and Tyler Pace on Denver's career points list after his seven-point afternoon, moving his total up to 156. Walker's five goals on Sunday also took his career number to 97 in that department, passing both Mike Law and Alex Demopoulos to move into seventh in Denver's DI history. Walker's hat trick was also the 20th of his career.

Freshman Ellis Geis (Tustin, Calif.) continued his hot start to the season with a season-best four points on two goals and two assists. Geis now has 13 points in four games this year on 10 goals and three helpers. Classmate Alex Simmons (Smithville, Ontario) had two goals and his first career assist to bring his season total to eight points. Senior Colin Rutan (Walnut Creek, Calif.) rounded out Denver's multi-goal scorers with his fourth and fifth of the campaign.

Walker gave the Pioneers the lead just over four minutes into the opening period with his fourth goal of the weekend and his fifth of the season. Cleveland State tied it up at 1-1 less than a minute later before Simmons sandwiched two goals around Geis' ninth of the season to make it 4-1 Denver. The Vikings scored twice in the final 8:14 of the half, cutting Denver's lead to one at the intermission.

Cleveland State won seven of the nine faceoffs in the first half, but the Pioneers caused seven of Cleveland State's 13 first-half turnovers to make-up the possession difference, while turning it over just four times themselves after losing it 20 times on Saturday.

Denver didn't waste its time coming out of the locker room, getting Walker's second goal of the day 11 seconds into the third quarter and Geis' second 38 seconds after that. The Pioneers answered Cleveland State's first goal of the half with a 6-1 run courtesy of goals from Jack Hannah (Milford, Ohio), Rutan, Walker, Colton Jackson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Walker again and Rutan again.

In the fourth quarter, Denver got a first goal since 2017 for Kyle Smith (New Canaan, Conn.) and first career goals for freshmen Johnny Marrocco (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Sam Dwinell (Dedham, Mass.).

Following a 20 turnover day on Saturday, the Pioneers limited the mistakes to 11 turnovers on Sunday, including just six in the first three quarters.

Denver lost the faceoff battled for the first time since May of 2016, but freshman Brett Boos (Parker, Colo.) did manage to win seven second half faceoffs after losing seven of the first nine draws.

he has his reasons for it, i'm sure. but to me, tierney maybe should keep his pointed criticisms in house. don't see any benefit to throwing them out in what limited press coverage lacrosse gets.
maybe not a popular take, but...

I think his candor and transparency is one of his strengths. He is very open and very consistent.

It is only one of his traits, of many, and I think his teams' results, year after year, speak to the high bar of excellence he has for his program.

everyone's a different animal. have had opportunities on the local level with press, and have decided being open, very consistent and having candor and transparency isn't necessary to use their vehicle, but rather prefer the locker room.

Tierney didn’t criticize any individual players; thus I’m ok with his comments.
Reason for such little sophomore production is 2 of last years top recruits no longer in program. Sophomores Curtis and Hannah, and Sullivan playing well. Lots of kids like Greenlee contributing. Lots of balance on offensive end.

Some usual early sloppiness that the Pios will hopefully outgrow as the season moves along.

If Ready can save 50%, that's all I ask. Today was 56%.

Boos got schooled today at the X, but it didn't really hurt DU that much because of the CSU turnovers, which were copious.

Clearing game needs work.

Hopefully Austin French gets back soon. Offense is improving as Walker gets over his bad back.

Need to be sharper at Carolina...

The renovation's at Carolina's Fetzer Field aren't done yet and I believe they started last summer. Carolina played Hopkins in the rain and a mud bowl on the grass in the football stadium and destroyed the grass field there. I doubt new grass will grow between now and Saturday. Mud bowls all over. Standing water. Showers forecast for Thursday-Friday-Saturday. I don't know how the game will be able to be played on the grass football field.

Just like it wes before synthetic turf. It’s a very different game. Bill knows it well. Cleats matter. Slides are not the same because of mud or dirt etc

Carolina has a synthetic football practice field (Navy Field) that DU and Carolina lax played on a few years ago when Fetzer was unplayable. It's standing room only with no facilities, but the game can be played without mud if they choose to do so...

Posted on the UNC forum. Not sure the early start time is good. But, good to hear it will be a different field from the JHU mud game.
Boxster54 wrote: Mon Feb 25, 2019 8:46 pm Just saw on the UNC website that the game this Saturday against Denver will be played in the new redesigned stadium at 10am instead of 11am! The women will play their game against Northwestern following that. I hope ESPN can adjust the schedule and show it on the ACC Network. Not sure if the new grass is ready yet since its been down less than a month, but its got to be better than whatever they could do for Kenen! That was a mess and I doubt they could fix it in time to host two games this weekend with more rain expected starting Thursday. Wish they put down field turf but soccer rules down there. I'm really looking forward to seeing the new stadium and hope the both Heels teams can break it in with a win!

6 assists from underclassmen vs Cleveland State was a good sign. Hannah/Simmons inside and Walker/Geis reciprocating outside from the wings could be start of a good trend. Defense is carrying the team while the boys figure out the offensive rhythm.

Walker and Gaines Named to Tewaaraton Award Watch List

https://denverpioneers.com/news/2019/2/ ... -list.aspx
Pioneer duo named to Tewaaraton Award Watch List for the second-consecutive year
Story LinksDENVER – University of Denver men's lacrosse junior attack Ethan Walker (Peterborough, Ontario) and senior close defender Dylan Gaines (Baltimore, Md.) have been named to the 2019 Tewaaraton Award Watch List, the award committee announced on Thursday.

A USILA Third Team All-America selection a year ago, Walker has 14 points through four games in 2019 on nine goals and five assists. With a year and a half still remaining in his career, Walker is sixth in Denver's DI history in career points with 156, seventh in goals with 97 and 10th in assists with 59. On Monday, Walker earned BIG EAST Attack Player of the Week honors after a 12-point weekend that included a seven-point performance against Cleveland State that included five goals.

Another USILA Third Team All-America selection a year ago, Gaines has helped lead Denver to the third-best defense in the country a year ago, and the second-best defense in the country so far this year, the two highest rankings in program history on that side of the ball. Gaines is currently third in Denver's DI history in caused turnovers with 46, four behind Brendan Deblois (2008-11) for second. The Baltimore, Md., native caused five turnovers and picked up four ground balls in Denver's 16-8 win over Cleveland State on Sunday afternoon.

Except from US Lacrosse Magazine: https://www.uslaxmagazine.com/college/m ... -territory

PIONEERING FRESHMEN
As Denver coach Bill Tierney ran down his options on offense late in the fall, he rattled off Ellis Geis as a possible contributor amongst a list of about a half-dozen others.

It was nothing against the 6-foot-4 freshman from California. It’s just that Tierney figured he had a capable starting attack ready to go with tested players.

“If we had everyone, we would have Ethan Walker on the left wing, Austin French at X and Colin Rutan on the right wing,” Tierney said this week. “And Ellis Geis would have gotten in in mop-up duty. He was good in the fall, but we weren’t sure, just like we weren’t sure about Drew Erickson or Johnny Marrocco. Until they get their opportunities in games that are meaningful, you don’t know how they’ll respond.”

Only the Pioneers (3-1) don’t have everyone. French has yet to play this season because of injury, creating an opening on attack. And Denver now knows exactly how Geis will respond. He has a team-high 10 goals entering Saturday’s trip to North Carolina, with Tierney understandably praising his effectiveness.

Geis is the most productive of a large Denver freshman class already contributing. Alex Simmons, who Tierney did anticipate would have a substantial role in the offense, has six goals and two assists while adjusting to playing with midfielders who possess college experience.

Then there’s the Brett Boos, who earned the chance to follow four-time first team All-America pick Trevor Baptiste as the Pioneers’ primary faceoff man. Boos has won 61.5 percent of his draws, including a 20 of 23 outing against Utah on Saturday that Tierney ventured was “Baptiste-esque” because the freshman collected 10 ground balls in the process.

As for Geis’ stellar start, there’s only one real question: What happens when French gets back?

“We’re going to have a good problem,” Tierney said.
