There's a lesson here all right - the question is for whom: the children who lost opportunities or the adults who will benefit at their expense?

To each his own but I see this as a terrible life lesson and teaching the opposite of resiliency. Some estimate are that 60% of small businesses in the country closed this past year. They don't get their businesses back. Millions of people lost their jobs, they don't get a "COVID year" where they don't have to pay their mortgage. High school kids lost sports, concerts, prom, trips, parties, basically everything that you remember as making being a teenager fun. They don't get any of that back. This isn't to whine and say any of those with such losses "deserve" restitution. Life is capricious and unfair and can suck at times. That though is the lesson, perhaps the most valuable one. Getting gifted a year of eligibility back doesn't teach resiliency, it is the opposite. You will miss out on jobs you deserve, girlfriends will dump you, others will make more and live more glamorous lives. Mommy and daddy won't be able to make everything right. But that is OK, you can gather yourself, breath in, breath out, move on. Resiliency is learned through fighting through, or just learning to live with, adversity. It isn't having a deus ex machina from the NCAA.

It’s really not that many kids playing additional years. The best kids will still find their way onto the field. Coaches that choose to have guys back or bring in grad transfers are doing so because they believe it is what’s best for the program. It’s D1 lacrosse, not everyone’s going to play.

If you’re going to be mad about it the focus shouldn’t be about playing time. In a sport where most (99%) aren’t full scholarship players, it makes it incredibly hard for players that don’t come from privileged backgrounds to take their extra year. It inadvertently gives preferential treatment to families with means - kicking any non elite players from blue collar families to the curb. The waiver to go over 12.6 helped in 2021, that’s no longer in effect. Many players want to play a 5th year at their school, they aren’t good enough players to warrant a lot of money or there simply isn’t money left to support 5 classes. In a year where people talked a lot about equity and opportunity, the move accidentally gave wealthy families yet another leg up.

I'm all for lessons in resiliency, but to be looking for that in a NCAA-sanctioned sport is misguided and unrealistic. The NCAA and the universities are fundamentally exploitative. That's an important life-lesson to learn as wel; to realize who is acting in your interest and who is not. Every one of these kids will have to deal with adversity in more meaningful circumstances than playing lacrosse. I'm not sure college lacrosse will be, or should be, a definitng experience. Most the kids entering the portal just want to play, find their level, and be at a school where they feel comfortable. More power to them.

Without getting into detail an acquiring program (because that’s what this is really Knox is just prepping to go pro and will be able to earn a living in the US or Canada in lacrosse) will need yo have some latitude on the academic side of things to bring him in. This is not to say he isn’t capable of achieving academically anywhere but as a no athletes more than half the D1 lacrosse schools wouldn’t accept his profile as a transfer student.

Enough of this "life lesson" resilency talk. My senior high school son lost all jr spring sports, 2 proms, 1.5 years of classroom substituted with remote learning, spring/ summer /fall workouts for a four game football season, no pep rallies. scored a TD at a homecoming game in front of 50 parents, a 10 game basketball season with zero fans in stands etc. it was a really tough year and a half and Covid robbed him of what most of the posters experienced in HIgh School. Three students in the junior class committed suicide the past two years!!! It has been rough and I think grizzled parents should not equate their problems with covid with those of a wide-eyed 17 year old.
Those college students fortunate enough to be playing D1 lax busted their humps for 10 plus years to put themselves in that position. They all have achieved more athletically than likely 90% of posters. If these dedicated student athletes wants to delay "entering real life" by trying to utilize all their eligibility then more power to them. I hope every kid who is in the portal lands somewhere. They have 25-50 years to "enjoy" work. If they can extend their athletic experience a year or two then more power to them!

Pretty broad brush. There is an entire spectrum between SEC Football where you could have an illiterate with brain damage and wrecked knees after four years and D-III women's fencing where NCAA competition enhances the collegiate experience.

So many decisions were made in the heat of the moment and with the best intentions that might not seem logical a year and a half later, I honestly believe that these decisions were done for the right reasons at the time they were made.

While the extra year has negatively impacted my son, he realizes that so many families have suffered so much more then losing playing time to transfer students he was just happy to be back on the field this spring.
