I'm hoping for an exciting, hard fought, hard riding contest, but either team could go on a streak and win it going away...depends on who has the mojo, not who has better talent.
Fantastic comeback effort by Maryland!

Officials had the whistle stuck for awhile there and the frenetic effort led to a ton of mojo...but UVA had just a smidge left.

At 6 mins, my son said Rode needed 2 saves for the win...I said 5, but he was right...but uncomfortably so! While the last was dramatic, the better of the two was actually eating up Bernhardt's shot whereas the last was a 'holding ground' save. Heroic, but that ball was going in if placed better.

Neither tender had great days, but Rode made the exactly one more needed...

UVA team D held the best player in the country to 5 points, rather than the 5 own goals he's been averaging plus assists. Fabulous player, my choice for Tewey for sure, but terrific job by UVA to hold him just enough in check. Terrific game by Wisnauskas...man can he bomb.

And of course Shellenberger and Moore put on quite a show. Lasalla and Conners...and Conner...and the attack as a unit working their tails off riding and being help in scrambles. Love the hustle factor.

But to me, game ball goes to UVA's rope unit, esp the SSDMs. Couple of break downs, but so much pressure withstood.

Good doesn’t always triumph over evil.

Also any team that got blown out by Cuse this year 20-10 ain’t natty level.

Onward to 2022 for Toomeys 2nd ‘ship.

You’re right. Hoos aren’t Natty level even though they just won the Natty. Makes perfect sense. We should just let you pick the winner next year before the season. “Live from Peter’s basement, it’s the NATTY PICK!”🤣🤣🤣

Considering Maryland beat a 4-9 JHU by a combined 3 goals over 2 games (one in OT) they undoubtedly deserved to be handed the championship.

Unfortunately the season has come and gone. Four very good teams came to play this weekend. While my heart is with the Terps yesterday game just did not go their way.

Hats off to Virginia on pulling out two tough wins.

The difference in the game was shooting percent. UVA shot 43.5%. Maryland shot 33%. UVA was 10-points better than it's season average. Maryland was 6-points lower than it's average. Maryland put 57% of its shots on goal. UVA put 72% of its shots on goal. Rode made 12 saves. McNaney made 11. At one point in the 4th quarter, UVA had put 26 of 34 shots on goal. For most of the game, they were shooting over 50%.

Everywhere else, it was a wash. UVA was +5 at the FOGO, but Maryland was +5 in ground balls. UVA had 4 more turnovers. Maryland was +10 in shots by having the overall possession advantage.

Maryland got to its normal goal output, but UVA's offense was better. Given that they were going against the 5th most efficient defense in the nation, putting up 17 goals. It all came down to shots. UVA was better at getting theirs on goal.

Maryland75 wrote: Sun May 30, 2021 3:17 pm Pretty sure the greatest Men’s lacrosse team was the Maryland 1973 squad that went 10-0 and beat Hopkins in the championship in three overtime’s. All ten starters plus one sub were named All Americans. At least the were probably the best in that era.
Next.....I'd go with the 2004 Navy team. What a battle of goalies in that game, not to mention Matt Russell having to come out and have his separated shoulder put back in place, with a broken clavicle. https://twitter.com/mmrussell16/status/ ... 87430?s=20
The 1973 Maryland team was a great team, but only 4 of its members are National Lacrosse Hall of Fame player inductees: Doug Radebaugh, Doug Schreiber, Mike Thearle & Frank Urso. Cornell's 1976 team boasts 6 player inductees: Mike French, Eamon McEneaney, Dan Mackesey, Chris Kane, Bob Henrickson & Bill Marino. Cornell's 1976 team was undefeated (16-0); every starter named an All America including 4 on the 1st Team, won the first 16 games of the 42 game winning streak that is still the record, including 5 victories over Johns Hopkins, pitched the only shutout in NCAA tournament history (14-0 against W&L), as stated above, 6 members of the team are inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, plus two coaches (Moran & Waldvogel), and it was named a Team Of Distinction by US Lacrosse.
I agree with this assessment, in the NCAA era...
Yes, just an opinion, quite unprovable, but based on the 'facts' available.

Takes absolutely nothing away from '73 Maryland team.
Don't see Navy 04 as close, though again, taking nothing away from them.

Some even older old timers could make an argument about earlier era teams.
Having played against the '73 Maryland team and having watched Cornell's comeback in 1976, I'd lean towards Cornell. I would point out in support of the '73 Maryland team, however, that they were dominate against all top competition in '73. Although JHU took the air out of the ball in the final, keeping it close, Maryland beat every other team in the tournament but the one they didn't play by at least 10 goals at some point in the season, including downing Hopkins 17 to 4 when both were undefeated in the last game of the regular season.

UVA #16 personally blocked 2 shots in the last few minutes

That's a dangerous hobby

Maryland staged an amazing comeback from 16-11 down

Maryland have consistently shut down opponent's star attackers

Thank you for being so gracious. Those were 2 heavyweights going at it in 1 of the best lacrosse contests you will ever see…. I also was very impressed with Maryland’s composure and the sportsmanship of the team and Tillman. These 2 teams will see each other again soon. They were both hitting really hard but it was a clean fair game.

Your Terps were impressive and it was a great game. Tiffany and Tillman had scheduled a UVA/UMD regular season game in 2020, and I think it was intended to be the first of a series. Hopefully it’s back on in 2022.
