Federal judge sentences former St. Paul officer to 6 years

ST. PAUL, Minn. — A federal judge sentenced a former St. Paul police officer Friday to six years in prison for kicking a suspect and allowing a police dog to maul him.

Thirty-three-year-old Brett Palkowitsch apologized through tears during the sentencing hearing before U.S. District Judge Wilhelmina Wright, Minnesota Public Radio reported. He said he would be willing to put himself in front of future officers to make sure "they know right from wrong, and how quick it can happen, and make sure it never happens again."

A federal jury in 2019 found Palkowitsch guilty of kicking Frank Baker and letting a police dog maul him in 2016 after Baker was mistaken for a robbery suspect. Baker suffered seven broken ribs and collapsed lungs.

Baker said he forgives Palkowitsch but wouldn't accept his apology. He said he still has trouble breathing.

"We've got this COVID-19 going on, and my lungs are messed up, so it's like I'm a prisoner in my own home," Baker told the radio network. "I can't go out because I'm primed to catch anything because of my lungs."

it’s because I want to say that I grew up in a time when there was zero political correctness. I literally saw political correctness being invented right in front of me (at certain schools) and then distributed and eventually enforced as a mindset and ideology. I want to say..

that one might have imagined at the time that the politically correct mindset and resulting implementation and enforcement would lead to a better society in which cultures and peoples were more integrated and more mutually understanding.

But it is often the case that seemingly obvious solutions fail and even make matters worse—I often think about the terrible track record we have in science of artificially modifying an ecosystem in order to ‘re-balance’ a problem we created but ultimately wind up making things…

...worse by creating bigger unforeseen problems. ‘The road to hell is paved w good intentions.’ We’ve been trying this kind of morality policing for awhile now & I would posit things are arguably getting worse. Race relations seem to be in the middle of a ‘two steps back’ moment.

I say this not only because it seems clear from news events and statistics that race relations in this country are particularly terrible, but also because my DMs have never been more filled with bizarre WWII era nonsense (like chink and jap, or whatever).

I am very sad that I feel like I have to say the following but here goes: Asians are not the problem. Blacks are not the problem. Jews are not the problem. And yes, Whites are not the problem either. No race or culture is ‘the problem.’

I have lived in many cities and countries and I can say from experience that there is an EQUAL distribution of bad ppl and good ppl in EVERY human population. Most are good, some aren’t great, and a very small number are clinical sociopaths you absolutely need to avoid.

When I grew up New York truly felt like a melting pot. It wasn’t perfect, but ppl did not self segregate along tribal lines to the degree that I am seeing today. There is something wrong with the strategy and direction we have chosen, in academia, in politics, and elsewhere.

It’s not working. And to be clear I am not blaming all of the bad things we are seeing in culture today on political correctness. Yes we inherited a problematic history (yada yada) and I think PC culture has achieved some good and some progress for society.

I am simply saying we should check our strategy if we are not getting the results we intended. I don’t know what the solution is, but I suspect that over sensitizing ppl to arbitrary characteristics like skin colour may be doing more harm than good.

I know very well that the idea of being ‘colour blind’ is out of fashion, that MLK’s vision of character over skin colour is considered to be naive. But that vision surely made our society better. I’m not sure the modern vision of ‘race consciousness’ is making things better.

Someone smarter than me told me about the idea of ‘the least interesting, interesting thing.’ We humans tend to be pre occupied with the least interesting interesting thing. When you get to know someone, their race, or where they were born, very quickly becomes less…

…interesting than what they think, and—to use a cliché—who they really are on the inside. Their arbitrary birth status may be interesting at first but is ultimately the LEAST interesting, interesting thing about them. That is always true.

If you are still reading this, congratulations, you have an attention span, (please give me some). I don’t often talk about race, especially my own, because I feel attention is like water in a garden: whatever you give it to will grow.

I pray this thread does not ignite some kind of melt down (if it does I’ll just delete because I have no more energy for that kind of thing atm).

I knew a bit about Jim Crow, lynchings etc as my uncle, Carl Carmer, wrote "Stars Fell On Alabama" in 1932 about his experiences in that state over a 5 year period as a young man, but I wasn't aware of the sheer scale of those lynchings until much later. I did know a bit about redlining in Baltimore, though, as I took urban policy courses, and did a senior thesis on gentrification policies, but I was unaware of how persistent race bias remains in housing appraisals, loans, broker steering etc. I knew there were lots of monuments that were offensive, but it's only in the past decade and a half that I've been conscious of their genesis during Jim Crow, often explicitly as a warning to uppity blacks...and that this continued into my lifetime.. for instance that Stone Mountain was carved in the 60's and finished in 1972. The most egregious celebration of the Confederacy was done in reaction to the civil rights movement. Didn't know that until recently.

What else do we not know, do we not understand, because we've buried these realities from critical view as we've taught US history?

Ahhh, that undoubtedly is what some would actually like education to be, or in some cases fear it is, indoctrination of the masses.

But it's certainly not why we should want critical thinking, a search for truth, and creativity to be essential components of our educational objectives.

If we put this in national self-interest terms, if we compete nationally as trained automotons, blindly hewing to the propaganda of the controlling interests, we will lose badly in the global competitive world...China has a heck of a lot more people and thus aggregate talent than we do and they're focusing hard on educating that population, so unless our system better supports critical thinking, creativity and 'truth seeking' they'll simply outnumber us and our system. And we need to be a lot better....

Or if we think that freedom and self-determination are important human needs and 'rights', such are not possible if instead authoritarians control our society, manipulating the information we consume, the "history" we read, in order to maintain control, truth be damned.

My main problem with education as it stands is that separate and dissimilar educational systems promote formation of separate and dissimilar "realities". One of the biggest problems is the false economy practiced by school system's acquisition of educational materials. Because the state of Tejas is one of the largest markets for textbooks, their standards are foisted off onto other school systems by virtue of the "golden rule" - those with the gold call the tune. Another huge issues is the prevalence of religious and charter (quasi-private in the sense they draw students and funds from student population served by the public school systems). They share mandates that on occasion are significantly different from those of the public system. Most significance is deviation from state standards and metric reporting (except when it is in their interest).

With separate and dissimilar (and many times unequal) educations, it is any wonder that our population increasingly reflects the varying worldviews intrinsic to these different systems? We could debate at length which is closer to objective reality (unknowable to anyone), but the intentional misinformation promulgated by revisionist, exclusionary history which glosses over or ignores the incredibly f^cked up events in our national history are not conducive to fostering an understanding that may lead to less repetition and continuance of negative trends (real estate red-lining, educational opportunity, career options, etc.).

It is possible to "escape" the bounds of this educational travesty, but it takes a fair amount of individual time and effort, which most citizens have neither the time nor the capacity for. I think it has been shown that the predominant "conservative" personality type is associated with a disinclination and intolerance of ambiguity. Given critical thinking and ratiocination lead to heightened states of ambiguity, maybe it is all attributable to neurology. Vive la difference?

Very interesting thesis...I'm about half way into it, and was wondering how they differentiated between "conservative" and "liberal" and found it on page 9. My one nit is in the particular 'issues' that are used to measure where one is on a scale on left to right. I'd suggest that if we're simply talking about primarily social 'conservatives' the rest of the analysis probably holds up...less so perhaps if other aspects of 'conservative' thinking would have been included, eg fiscal policy and national defense. These may not hold up as so correlated with acceptance or preference of ambiguity.

Plenty of such conservatives are quite comfortable with ambiguity, indeed it is the respect for unintended consequences that drives these other sorts of 'conservatives' to advise care rather than headlong decisions. And we probably all know some "liberals" who are rather simplistic in their choices, unwilling to brook disagreement. Unwilling to acknowledge gray in their black and white binary worlds.

That said, it's a pretty good construct for understanding how this current version of tribal, right wing 'conservatism' is so willing to ignore all the hypocrisy of their views and to instead adopt whatever Der Leader or their preacher tells them...as long as it is generally consistent with a simplistic, unchallenging (unambiguous) view of the world in which they feel comfortable (advantaged).

And it is not at all difficult to imagine a rather dystopian world in which the "Tejas" sort of approach hardens into a national, federally controlled mandate that is anti-science, anti-truth, and ahistorical, all in the interests of an authoritarian right wing's continued control. As for the increased violence, well let's see. I was reading about some increased violence in Miami and was wondering about the political affiliation of that state's governor (?). Another city decrying mass violence was Indianapolis - governor is a Republican, right? As we all know, and contrary to Donald Dunce's point of view, responsibility always goes to the top, right? So who gets the blame ~ the mayor or the governor?

Recall that it was you who previously posted a couple of links which showed that the massive increase in violent crime began under your hero Donald Dump. Why did Dumpster cause so much violence, hate, bigotry, insurrection, treason, and social upheaval??
