CAA 2025
Re: Colonial Athletic Association 2021
not that it matters but I could swear RT had 3 g - box has em with 2 , didnt he score second g for hof in 1 q?
Re: Colonial Athletic Association 2021
The Post Mortem,
One thing UMass did real well, 16 goals on 11 assists.
Devin Spencer is filling the Chris Connolly role well.
Knote is solidifying his spot as the top goaltender in
this league.
19 turnovers, due mostly to scrums on faceoffs, failed
clears, tbd ?
UMass and Delaware stand athwart this conference.

Re: Colonial Athletic Association 2021
Hofstra needs to be better on 50/50 ground balls , more hands free seperation from the o-middies , coaches will figure it out
Re: Colonial Athletic Association 2021
I mentioned this after watching Hofstra's first game this year, but it is worth repeating. Dominic Pryor might be the best SSDM in the CAA. He just stands out in every game I have watched. Very physical and just doesn't get beat inside. His stats don't jump off the page but he is an animal.
Anyway, the rest of the Hofstra defense is suspect. They played okay against UMass. But too many stupid penalties and too many guys were left wide open for time and room shots inside 10 yards. Bobby Casey, although picked pre-season as first-team CAA goalie, is not Matt Knote. And that, ultimately, cost the Pride in the end. 30% isn't getting it done against anyone.
Knote and Consoli stand atop the CAA as far as goaltending goes.
We will see what the second matchup brings with these two squads in less than two weeks. Hopefully, both teams are at full strength by then.
On a side note, Ryan Tierney continues to lead his team in penalties. It is amazing to me to see an attackman lead his team in penalties. You can predict when these undisciplined penalties are about to occur. They generally follow a turnover by him when he tries to beat a double team and gets stripped. You could see UMass was getting inside his kitchen with trail checks and constant doubles. FIVE turnovers on the day. Great player, but very undisciplined. Maybe the Coach gives him too much rope? Or maybe he sees too much of himself in his son?

Re: Colonial Athletic Association 2021
I hope they can, and I’m hoping they can get back a
couple more players assuming its just minor injuries,
not including Concannon.
Ryan Tierney looked stiff, unconfident against UMass,
maybe due to the defense, I only saw really one Ryan
Tierney move that entire game.
UMass, this is what they’ve done over the past five seasons,
disciplined Cannella style play, beating Yale, only a
couple real clunkers during that stretch. Dillon Arrant
gives them a different dimension on offense. Its too bad
they were slightly off against Albany, a decent but not
so great team.
Re: Colonial Athletic Association 2021
I always remember back in the day , when we got our ass kicked we always rebounded the next game , my guess is that will happen sat
Re: Colonial Athletic Association 2021
Sconone is long gone. Hofstra goalies are ok, they just gave up 16 goals at home . Doesn’t matter who it was, save % is low. Shoot & shoot again. Tierney is a monster but play his tendencies & deny his left.
Re: Colonial Athletic Association 2021
I think teams will be studying what UMass did in this
game.
I really remember Tierney doing his patented swim
towards the left, across the entire plane of the goal,
to find a man open, to get a shot off, maybe once.

Cannella is fascinating. HOF coach eventually IMO but how10stone5 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 31, 2021 10:13 amI hope they can, and I’m hoping they can get back a

Many have been up and down as much for so long as him at this level. Post 2012 was a rough stretch. Maybe over a long enough period the answer is s**t will happen mathematically and they had suspensions and some kids moved in that stretch I believe but it’s been weird how they’ll throw up a couple of 5-9, 7-8 years then 13-3 and second rd followed up with a 11-5 and playoff appearance. Don’t seem as strong generally as when I followed them more closely in the 2000s but still top three in the CAA pretty much every year.
Edit: looked it up as I paid more attention to 2000s Unass and Cannella best stretch was 2001-2007 (ECAC). 7-7 in 2004 but over that 6yr stretch including 2004 he was 70-24, basically 11.5-4 average record with 3 quarterfinals and a national finalist loser to undefeated UVA. Somehow they didn’t make the playoffs in 2001 being tied for 1st in conference and 12-2 overall. Outside the traditonal power group, maybe now including Denver and Duke since that period, not many programs did that well over a half dozen years. Maybe Navy. Not really OSU or ND. GTown perhaps in the Urick years at some point. Loyola and Towson haven’t strung that kind fo stretch together.
Harvard University, out
University of Utah, in
I am going to get a 4.0 in damage.

Re: Colonial Athletic Association 2021
This current stretch for UMass started at the latter part
of 2017.
They beat Yale three times during this time, in 2017 they
beat Yale and upset Hofstra on a miracle goal as time
elapsed.
Tigers were also of course playing well then, winning the
CAA and reaching the Final Four, and 2019 riding a great
season by Brendan Sunday to come close to the quarterfinals.
This year, its a pick ‘em, UMass - Hens.
But Cannella is recruiting well, still finding those
unknown stars, I don’t see UMass falling back any
time soon.

Re: Colonial Athletic Association 2021
Halfway through this FUBARd season.
And yet, we’re seeing some great lacrosse.
Looking at the top individual players, I had specifically
been looking at the returning seniors at the start of
the season because it is hard to beat that level of
experience, Charlie Kitchen, Ryan Tierney, Jeff Trainor,
Dylan Beckwith, Matt Varian, Reid Bowering, Brody
McLean, Travis Ford, Michael Altmann, Jackson Suboch,
a lot of talent there and a lot of experience.
But, I’d have to put Charlie Kitchen at the top of
any CAA list, I think he’s been the most valuable player
in this conference. The things Kitchen does don’t show up
in the scoresheet, the leadership.
Of course, the Towson game demonstrated these attributes.
Kitchen on the game tying goal could have spared himself
a beating and passed it off for what may have been the
tying goal, he had someone open slightly for the shot.
Instead he opted for the sure thing, took the responsibility.
Also, on the winning goal, Kitchen was there directing
traffic, directing Tye Kurtz to set him up for the
winning goal, on the crease in case of any rebounds.
