Re: FanLax Forum Poll
1. Boston College -- nothing really to say here. Until someone beats them, they remain No. 1. And they certainly look the Champions at this early stage. The caveat is only that I'm not sure they've played a really good team yet.
2. North Carolina -- sort of the accompaniment to No. 1, UNC will remain No. 2 until someone other than BC beats them or they beat BC. The Florida game sounded close; it wasn't. The game was never in doubt, and UNC played like that. Once they figure out how to use all the pieces they've assembled, UNC will be a good match for BC.
3. Syracuse -- did you feel the huge drop off from No. 2 to No. 3? I did, when I watched Syracuse's defense flounder a bit against an OK offense in SBU.
4. Northwestern -- much as it pains me, and it does, I don't know where else to slot NU.
5. Loyola Maryland -- nice opener against a good and spirited JHU team at Homewood. The trip down Charles Street to enemy territory makes this an away game, and the officiating in the first half made it feel like Homer-wood to me anyway. Adams has to settle on a lineup, and stop the endless shifting of personnel, so that her team learns to play together.
6. Stony Brook -- good showing against the Cuse in the Dome. They looked better than I thought they would.
7. Florida -- creditable showing against one of the two really good teams in the country earns them an early high'ish ranking from this idiot.
8. Maryland -- beat St. Joe's and UVA, both away from the comfy weirdness of their field hockey field. I cannot figure a way to rank them lower until I see some other teams impress more. Terps have a goaltending issue that needs to be resolved. I'd start the freshman and let the chips fall. And they are an injury to Cordingly away from mediocrity.
9. Princeton -- beat UVA in Charlottesville in Princeton's first game in 751 days. Played good defense; good offense; and well between the restraining lines. When its best player double yellow'ed, neither Princeton nor the clueless UVA announcer seemed to notice. As I write this, kinda think I should have put them above the Terps. But No. 9 for this week.
10. Denver -- I put Denver here so I didn't have to put Duke in the top 10 for beating Garnder-Webb, Elon, Bill & Mary, and HPU.
11. Duke -- tough matches against Wofford and East Carolina should sharpen the Devilettes for their trip to the Carrier Dome. Sigh.
12. James Madison -- really surprised by the loss to VTech, and probably shouldn't have the Dukes this high.
13. Penn -- good opener against a mediocre to poor Delaware team. Saturday contest in Philly against JHU should tell us more.
14. Virginia -- yep, I have these women at No. 14, while acknowledging that the Hoos are on the cusp of a potentially disastrous run. Next up: BC, then Stanford, then Notre Dame in South Bend.
15. Rutgers -- haven't seen this crew play, but liked the reports of gutting it out against Georgetown.
16. Johns Hopkins -- got them ranked here for now.
17. Michigan -- Wolverines were impressive against Notre Dame...but I don't know if Notre Dame is any good yet.
18. Notre Dame -- yup, they lost to Vanderbilt and Vandy isn't in my Top 20. I warned you: I'm an idiot.
19. Stanford -- this team is going to have bumps in the road; very young and coach appears to be committed to a process of quick maturation.
20. Jacksonville -- the loss to USC should have bumped them off this list, but it didn't because, when I was filling the poll out, I forgot that Jacksonville lost to USC. So, you know....
