But that ranking preserves the OSU / JHU head-to-head result. OTOH, both Massey and Power Rankings reverse the head-to-head result in their relative rankings.DU-fan wrote: ↑Mon Mar 15, 2021 11:52 amThe media poll agrees with you on UNC.

18 Delaware (5 - 1) 63 22
19 Vermont (2 - 2) 53 29
20 Hofstra (3 - 1) 52 18
I did not find UMass' win over Fairfield convincing enough to move them from 16 to 13.
I also did not find OSU's win over Michigan a reason to move them up. Michigan was close to beating them.

Re: D1 Men Rankings
I like the Massey ratings. They have 5 Ivy League teams in the top 21. That seems about right.
Re: D1 Men Rankings
Good ole boys ranking system:
DU's wins against teams with a combined record of 6-15. Hey, I recognize their coach's name. Lets make them number ten in the nation (or Q making them 11).
JHU has two wins against teams with a combined record of 1-7. Hey, they are JHU. Lets make them number 15 in the nation (Or Q making them 14).
PSU cannot beat a team that only beats teams with losing records. Hey, I thought they were better than this. Lets make them number 17 (Or Q making them 16).
This is not a ranking system. It is a wish list.

Good post to get a reaction Do you really think Navy would beat PSU if they played this Saturday? I actually don't know, but if I had to put money on the game, I would bet on Penn State.Dip&Dunk wrote: ↑Tue Mar 16, 2021 12:49 pm Good ole boys ranking system:

Re: D1 Men Rankings
Why? PSU has looked dreadful. They are offensively inept (yea they had one good showing against OSU, but they're a mediocre defensive team, and their goalie only saved 5 shots). No one except Malone can even get a step to draw a slide.DU-fan wrote: ↑Tue Mar 16, 2021 12:57 pmGood post to get a reaction Do you really think Navy would beat PSU if they played this Saturday? Not really sure what you think the alternative should be given your criteria. Delaware's wins are against teams with a combined record of 6-18. Navy's two wins are against teams that are a combined 4-8. Hostra is another example—they're 3-1 but their wins are over teams that are 4-12, and they also lost to 1-4 St. John's.Dip&Dunk wrote: ↑Tue Mar 16, 2021 12:49 pm Good ole boys ranking system:

I wouldn't rank PSU after their showing last week. But there just aren't a lot of teams with wins over good teams. The ones that do are already ranked in the top 10. After that it's just a crapshoot. With respect to Hopkins, you can always quibble with precise placement within the top 20 but if you watched the game it would be very difficult to argue they aren't a top 20 caliber team at this point in the season.
Re: D1 Men Rankings
And we're not going to know until NCAA tourney time. Especially tough to know where to rank Big 10 teams, any other conference with no OOC games, UMass. There will no doubt be some controversial non-AQ invitations to the NCAAs, but by the end we should know a lot more. Until then, we might as well throw darts at a moving target.
Re: D1 Men Rankings
I agree on the B1G teams. With no OCC games it is hard to figure out what a losing record means. To Navy's credit they do play Loyola twice, Lehigh, Army and UVA. But, until I see more, I would not bet money on Navy beating PSU.FannOLax wrote: ↑Tue Mar 16, 2021 1:19 pmAnd we're not going to know until NCAA tourney time. Re: D1 Men Rankings
you're right. this is 100% true. And... After so many seasons watching Maryland and how Maryland stacks up against other top teams, I think we have a pretty good idea where they stand re: the other NCAA top teams. (I use MD as the example because they're the most consistent B1G team.) So if a B1G team beats MD, it's a lot like beating any of the NCAA top teams. e.g. UNC, Duke.

Agreed. And, though dealing with not enough information, if I were a betting man, I'd take PSU. navy beating Jacksonville is meaningful but PSU beating OSU (that beat JHU and michigan) is more so.

I wouldn't get too fired up about rankings. They mean nothing.
At the end of the season, you will have one team from the CAA, one team from the American East, one team from the MAAC, one team from the NEC, one team from the SoCon, 3 teams from the Patriot, 2 teams from the Big East, 4 teams from the ACC and 3 teams from the Big Ten (one of them most likely with a .500 record) in the tournament.
The MAAC and NEC will have a play-in game and the final four will be Maryland, Duke, UNC and Virginia.
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...
(three teams from Patriot League might be a stretch)

Syracuse guys just shat themselves when they read this.
Now I love those cowboys, I love their gold
Love my uncle, God rest his soul
Taught me good, Lord, taught me all I know
Taught me so well, that I grabbed that gold
I left his dead ass there by the side of the road, yeah

Re: D1 Men Rankings
I'm sorry you can't be in the top 20 if you are 1-3 and just scored 6 goals against an average Hopkins team. Too bad the Big 10 is only playing in conference, that is their decision. Watch, if Penn St beats Michigan Saturday they will move up. Pollsters love the big marquee name schools. It's a joke. For all of you that say it doesn't matter tell that to the players at BU at 3-1, Bryant at 3-1, Albany 2-1, UMBC at 2-0 it matters to them, and before you start I don't care who they played.
Re: D1 Men Rankings
I disagree. they don't decide games but they're meaningful. saying rankings mean nothing is like saying with relation to a court of law, The media means nothing. the words, the discussions, the rankings don't necessarily shape the actual game but it has a large effect on everything that happens around the game. and the stuff around the game is a lot.

If you lose to the #1, #2, and #3 teams in the nation and beat #11, logic would say that you should be between #4 and #10, no?

i haven't seen anything that says there'll be 9 at larges this year. you'd have to have another play in game if you did that and not call them play in games. given they are dropping a conference, i'd have to imagine it's 8 at larges.Henpecked wrote: ↑Tue Mar 16, 2021 2:30 pm I wouldn't get too fired up about rankings.
