From Navy Sports Website:

Capacity limits at outdoor venues in Anne Arundel County has been adjusted from 25 percent capacity at outdoor sporting venues to 50 percent capacity or 250 people, whichever is the lesser number, by County Executive Steuart Pittman.

Due to this guidance that was issued on Thursday, attendance at Navy's men's and women's lacrosse games will be limited to Navy player guests.

The No. 19 Navy men's lacrosse team (1-0) will be back in action on Sunday when the Mids take on Jacksonville (2-0) at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and on the radio on WNAV (1430 AM / 99.9 FM).

The No. 20 Navy women's lacrosse team (2-0) will travel to Washington, D.C. on Saturday to take on George Washington (0-0) at 1:00 PM. Navy's next home game is Sunday, March 7 at 12 noon against Bucknell.
This 50% capacity or 250 people, whichever is less, is abysmally stupid. Why raise the capacity and then reduce the possible numbers of people who can attend. 250 is less than 1% of the capacity of Navy/Marine Corps stadium. I hope the Navy Sports Department can clear this up with the state government and start getting fans to the games. It would be nice to actually collect some revenue for the 20-21 year.....

Nice win that started very slowly (down 5-2) but Found their stride right before half and Jacksonville never recovered.

Especially solid effort / results on FOs; GBs; SOG / shared scoring. Another lockdown team D effort after Q1 too. Bring on the Bison.

Go Navy! Beat Bucknell!

I may have been premature in blaming this on AACo officials.
Apparently it is MD state guidance for outdoor sporting contests.
This was clearly not established with large venues in mind.
I note that UMD, JHU, & Loyola appear to not allow any spectators.
What did MD allow at their 2 NFL venues ? I wasn't paying attention.

Impressive comeback win over a fast starting JU, after a shaky first 1.5 qtrs.

Moving 21 from x to MF1 looked like a dubious decision at first. He's the straw that stirs Navy's O & the plebe 6 attackman looked shaky at first. Then they started winning fo's, inverting 21 to x & things started to happen. After 6 got his first goal, the wisdom of the change became apparent. Later in the game, 21 stayed on at x attack on some runs by mf2. ...21 reminds me of one of my all time favorites -- Bruce Nechanicky.
Looks like we've got a new brother act, & a 3rd member of a previous one.

Impressive offensive depth -- 57, 17 & 21 didn't have to do it all themselves. They just made heads up plays allowing all the new guys to cash in. e.g. 57 on the ground, not giving up & hanging it over the rim for 6 to dunk. 42 did well filling in for 32 on emo. Look forward to the return of 32 & especially 28. Seeing regular runs by mf2 & some quality shifts by a mf3 brought back fond memories. Quality depth at dm & lsm too. Likin' the long bench.

One of the all time game calls by the best lax broadcasting duo in the business. It's a treat when they're both together. Joe Miller's analysis & observations are spot on.

This W, and the impressive reasons for it, could be worth a revised rankings result of several steps up the ladder going into the Bucknell game this coming Sat. Maybe to #14 or possibly #13? 🤔

Go Navy! Beat Bucknell!

Sat May 1 may be a potential make up date for Navy - Bucknell.
Navy has tentatively sched UVA for that date. That's Bucknell's 2nd game vs Lafayette.
Who knows how many other PL sched disruptions there will be.
I think VONL announced that 3 Mids were covid scratches for today's game.

The Navy men’s lacrosse team seemed lost for much of the first half Sunday afternoon. As rain came down in buckets at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, visiting Jacksonville looked comfortable as it made crisp passes and showed no hesitation when it found scoring chances.

The Dolphins took advantage early, building a 4-1 lead after the first quarter and holding a 5-2 advantage with less than three minutes left in the half. It was an upset in the making in Annapolis.

“The way Jacksonville came out and jumped us early with their emotion and energy, I think gave us a little shot,” second-year Navy coach Joe Amplo said, “and it was exactly what we needed. We challenged our guys last week to take a punch and practice with that in mind this week, and I think they answered.”

A team that plays as many young players as the No. 19 Mids and is still jelling could’ve struggled to overcome the deficit, but instead they answered with a vengeance and strung together one of their most dominant runs in recent memory. Senior long stick midfielder Jeff Durden’s unassisted goal with 2:34 left in the half sparked a 9-0 run by Navy, which tied the score before halftime and netted all six third-quarter goals en route to a 13-6 victory.

Playing in their first games of the season, junior Jacob Jarosz dominated the faceoffs by winning 17 of 23 draws, and his brother, plebe midfielder and fellow Severn School graduate Jon Jarosz, scored a hat trick and was one of nine Mids to find the back of the net.

Sophomore midfielder James Flannery and plebe midfielder Bryson Rhee each had two goals, senior attackman Tyler Perreten had a pair of assists and sophomore midfielder Patrick Skalniak amassed three points on a goal and two assists.

“We’re not relying on one aspect of lacrosse,” Amplo. “There’s not one guy on offense, there’s good pieces on defense.”

Durden’s goal shifted the momentum, and it was a microcosm of what Navy hopes to be this season — the perfect mix of youth and senior leadership. Plebe defender Jackson Bonitz, a former three-sport standout at McDonogh, launched a 60-yard pass on the money to Durden, who did the rest.

“The pass was unbelievable,” Amplo said. “And then Jeff, I was almost going to call timeout, and he just takes a shot, and that gave us a large boost. It made us settle down more than bring us to a higher level because I felt like there was some nerves, there was some anxiety on the sidelines and the way we were playing, we needed a play.”

Junior Nick Cole cut the deficit to one just 43 seconds later, and Jon Jarosz knotted the score at with 28 seconds left before the break. Jacksonville failed to possess the ball late in the half until a last-second shot by goalkeeper Adam Baker (eight saves).

By the time Jacksonville (2-2) tallied its next shot attempt, Navy (2-0) had claimed a 10-5 advantage.

Jacob Jarosz was relentless on faceoffs and the Mids’ offense found its stride and scored in quick succession. Senior attackman Christian Daniel, who entered the game six points shy of 100 for his career, put Navy in front 55 seconds into the second half, and plebe midfielder Max Hewitt notched his second goal of the season soon after. Flannery’s first of the game and Rhee’s second 1:09 apart extended the lead to 9-5, and Skalniak and Flannery again buried perfectly placed shots from distance to cap the 9-0 run.

“It starts with Jacob Jarosz,” Amplo said. " … Credit to that kid. He didn’t take one faceoff last week and when we were getting our tails kicked in facing off in the fourth quarter last week, he probably should have went in the game, and I texted him afterwards and I told him we won’t let that happen again. He didn’t complain and he just does his job every day, and today I’m really proud of him for doing his job and really helping us earn this victory in a large way.”

Jacob Jarosz credited assistant coach John Orsen for scouting the Jacksonville faceoff specialist and finding a particular flaw he could exploit.

Navy freshman Jon Jarosz, a Severn graduate, looks to get away from Jacksonville defender Dixon Smith during Sunday’s game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. Jarosz scored three goals and Navy won, 13-6, to improve to 2-0 on the season.

“When he lost the clamp, he would tend to fishhook in front and it allowed the through-the-legs to yourself to be wide open … and it really worked today,” Jacob Jarosz explained. “I got to give credit to all the other faceoff guys because it was a really intense week of practice for the five of us.”

Jacob Jarosz said only one thing was missing from what was otherwise an exceptional day for his family: an assist for his brother.

“Every time he [Jon] scored I was screaming. Just seeing him out there and scoring, especially as a freshman, I was like, wow, that’s awesome,” he said. “I wanted to try to get an assist or something to him on a fastbreak, but it didn’t work out. But it was awesome to see him out there.”

The nation’s top-rated freshman class was key in Navy’s win. Bonitz got another stamp of approval from Amplo for his effort and ability to “make plays you don’t expect a freshman to make.”

“When he’s on the ball I think everybody takes a breath and is calm and feels comfortable,” the coach added.

Durden described the entire freshman class as “super hard-working” and added, “I can’t say enough great things about them, whether that’s on the field or off the field.”

The influx of youth has also pushed solidified players like Daniel, a captain, into new roles.

“He’s a senior who, the ball has been in his stick a lot for Navy the past few years, but he’s accepted his role and being a leader, and we get to 13 today because everybody bought into the plan,” Amplo said.

“Hopefully these guys just continue to grow up. Our potential and our success later on in the season is going to be determined by how mature these kids can be moving forward.”

Matt Stagnitta led Jacksonville with three points on a goal and two assists. Troy Hettinger (Marriotts Ridge) and Brendan McKenna (River Hill) each scored once for the Dolphins, while Tucker Denault (Spalding) tallied an assist.

This preseason preview is playing out as planned.
https://www.capitalgazette.com/sports/n ... story.html

Attackman Christian Daniel, long stick midfielder Jeff Durden and close defensemen Nick Franchuk spearhead the list of proven commodities. Plebes such as attackman-midfielder Jon Jarosz (Severn) and close defenseman Jackson Bonitz (McDonogh) headline a recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 nationally by Inside Lacrosse. Navy starting quarterback Xavier Arline was among that top-ranked class but is not listed on the lacrosse roster.

Amplo is confident numerous returning players without much of a reputation to date will step up and become productive performers this season,...
“We’re a long way from who we were as a team last year in terms of ability to do different things. We have more options on both ends of the field,” Amplo said.

Defense would seem to be a strength for the Midshipmen due to the presence of Durden, Bonitz, Andrew McKenna and Tim Griffin among others.
McKenna has made 31 straight starts on close defense, a streak that began with the first game of his freshman season. The 6-foot-2, 194-pound senior has amassed 33 ground balls and 25 caused turnovers in his career.
Franchuk, who has made 11 straight starts dating back to his sophomore season, has emerged as the team’s top individual defender. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior will usually cover the opponent’s top attackman. He was also voted by teammates to wear the No. 40 in honor of Brendan Looney.
“Matt is very physical and extremely disciplined. He’s left-handed, which gives a lot of attackmen problems,” Amplo said.
Bonitz, an MIAA wrestling champion and highly decorated lacrosse player at the Owings Mills private school, will be the third starter on close defense. The Pennsylvania native was ranked the No. 2 defenseman in the Class of 2020 by Inside Lacrosse and was a member of the U.S. Under-19 national team.
“Jackson is very versatile in that he can play down low or up top. We’ll use him on attackmen and midfielders depending on the matchups,” Amplo said. “I love Jackson’s attitude. He is very eager to learn and grow.”

Long stick midfielder Jeff Durden has proven he can make an impact on the offensive end for the Navy men's lacrosse squad.
Durden will be the starter at long stick midfield for the third straight season and possesses proven offensive ability with nine career points (six goals, three assists). Juniors Jimmy Rubino and Dan Jordan along with senior Jacob Mandish (Severn) round out the unit.

Griffin is the season veteran of the short stick defensive midfield crew, which includes senior Colin Meehan and freshman Kai Sasaki (McDonogh). Junior Augie Fratt and sophomore Henry Rentz (Severn), who combined for 15 points last season, have moved from offense to defense to provide depth.
“We’re going to play four or five short sticks every game because we want to be aggressive going defense to offense,” Amplo said. “We have a group that is tough and athletic, which we feel can push the ball in transition and spark the offense.”

Amplo pointed out how difficult it has become in Division I lacrosse to score six-on-six. Navy, which will have several new faces on attack and midfield, may not be polished on the offensive end of the field early on.
“There are so many scenarios where we can create to put pressure on the defense. We want to make the first 30 seconds of each possession uncomfortable,” he said. “We need to manufacture goals until we grow up offensively.”

Senior Spencer Rees will backstop the Navy defense despite having appeared in just five career games. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Boys’ Latin product, whose older brothers Matt and Casey were standout players for the Midshipmen, has impressed during preseason practice.
“Spencer is a senior and deserves the opportunity,” Amplo said. “Spencer can stop the ball and has shown tremendous poise in the clearing game.”
If Rees falters, Amplo has no problem turning to sophomore Pat Ryan or freshman Gabe Craven. He said the talent gap among the goalies is slim.

Navy captured just over 50% of faceoffs last season with Nick Barry (45-for-87) taking the majority. Sophomore Nate Hammond is atop the depth chart on draws going into the opener, having moved ahead of Berry by adjusting better to new rules. Faceoff specialists can no longer go down on one knee or use a motorcycle grip.
Amplo is planning to use a pair of poles — usually Bonitz and Franchuk — as wings on faceoffs in an attempt to improve in that department.

Daniel is the most productive returning member of the offense, having totaled 87 points on 58 goals and 29 assists. The Owings resident has started 30 of 31 career games and posted a point in 29.
Daniel, a co-captain along with Franchuk, possesses a hard, accurate left-handed shot and has proven dangerous as a catch-and-shoot attackman. He led Navy with 17 points in just five games a year ago.
" I want to see Christian play like a senior. When the ball is in his stick, something good can potentially happen,” Amplo said. “We need Christian to make plays when it matters most.”
Senior Tyler Perreten and junior Nick Cole are returning starters on attack after finishing second and third on the team in scoring with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
Cole, who has started all 18 games of his career and produced 36 points, will once again operate behind the cage as offensive quarterback. Perreten, a Severn School product and Crofton resident, amassed seven points on five goals and two assists against Colgate.
Jarosz, a Severn School product who spent the 2019-20 academic year at the Naval Academy Prep School, has shown in preseason he can be an imposing offensive force. The 6-foot-6, 224-pound Gambrills resident is a downhill dodger who will be used for invert situations.
“We just don’t have a dodging presence on attack. We think Jarosz could provide some presence and pop behind the cage,” Amplo said.

Navy’s first midfield will consist of some combination of senior Michael Foster, sophomores Patrick Skalniak and James Flannery along with freshman Dane Swanson. Skalniak was the top midfielder producer last season with five goals and five assists. Swanson, another McDonogh graduate, was rated the No. 6 midfielder in the Class of 2020 by Inside Lacrosse.
“Dane is a dangerous perimeter shooter. He’s got a cannon,” Amplo said.

(A) Results did not come back until after game time
(B) Outbreak is within Brigade, not lax team specifically which is tested more often under NCAA guidance
(C) Contact tracing has effectively closed Bancroft Hall
(D) I don't know
(E) Does it really matter?
(F) It is a plot between the Rockefellers, Queen of England, Knights Templar and Bill Gates
