Fernandez had a significant lower body injury in the fall. We haven't seen him in practice videos. I haven't been told officially that "he's out" but you can read between the lines.
My educated guess for 2/20, with one large caveat: The team isn't going to be able to scrimmage another team before the real games begin, meaning the games will be their first evaluative live action. Long story short: The lineup on 2/27 probably won't be the same as the one on 2/20.
Attack: Epstein, Grimes, DeSimone
M1: Williams, Zinn, Angelus
M2: Degnon, McDermott, Baskin
M3: Keogh, Raposo, Evans
Next in line at A/M: Chauvette, Bauer
SSDM: Glassmeyer, who the f*ck knows
LSM: Jaronski, Delaney
D: Szuluk, Lyne, Reinson
Next in line at D: McManus, Smith
FO: Prouty
G: Kirson
I'm putting a decent amount of stock in the position changes. There's no reason to update the roster online if those aren't fairly legit. I do think the Williams at middie thing has some legs. That being said, all of the "middies"—especially the guys listed as "A/M"—are options to come in through the box but then stay on the field as attackman after a goal. Gonna be lots of mix and matching.
McDermott can 100% play midfield. In fact I think he fits better there in college. I've said it before but the way he plays reminds of Tom Schreiber. He sees the whole field from up top. Swiss army knife. Can do a little bit of everything. Rides like an absolute madman. He'll force his way into the top 6 eventually but probably not immediately.
Ideally you don't have all righties at close D so I think that gives Reinson a good chance to start. He's the most experienced defenseman on the team. He's got talent. He's going to play.
They went out and got Szuluk for a reason. I've heard he's been good in practice. He's going to play.
Would give the edge to Lyne for that last spot given the captaincy but McManus is also still hanging around. As is Smith, who is healthy. False alarm on that front.
SSDM I truly have no clue. I've heard good things about Martin. He is blazing fast and athletic and has offensive skills as well. Could be a huge asset in transition. Not sure about his cover ability. Glassmeyer is going to play but beyond that not comfortable making any projections.
LSM, Jaronski is very likely your #1. Heard he's had a good offseason as well. I suspect Delaney sees the field. Yes, he hasn't played competitive lacrosse in a long time, but he is an incredible athlete. Not to mention, half these guys haven't played competitive lacrosse in awhile. I'm sure he'll figure it out. Everything we've heard about Milliman is that he values work ethic/attitude first (provided there is at least SOME talent, of course) and then he lets those goes find their way.
Johns Hopkins 2021
Re: Johns Hopkins 2021
Very pleased that my guesses are largely in line with 16's. Can't wait to see actual players on the field (inshallah) next weekend.

Great look, thanks! One player you didn't mention was Mabbett - they moved him to SSDM on the roster - any word on how he is coming along with that?HopFan16 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 14, 2021 12:58 pm Fernandez had a significant lower body injury in the fall. The dogs bark, but the caravan moves on
Re: Johns Hopkins 2021
No inside info on Mabbett, but I just don't believe he's athletic enough to survive at SSDM. Hope I'm wrong, but don't see it happening.
Re: Johns Hopkins 2021
Haven't heard anything on him. Was initially surprised to see the switch but given the logjam on offense and the need for a few more bodies at SSDM, it makes some sense to throw a 6'4''/210 dude out there to see if he can play a little defense.
You obviously need some size and strength to play SSDM, but you don't see too many tall guys at the position. Likely because you need a pretty low center of gravity. Without a 6-foot pole to help you cover your man it really becomes all about footwork and maintaining leverage. From a size, speed, and athleticism perspective, Martin and Arteaga both fit the bill, but are just total unknowns at this point. Without a fall ball or any scrimmages it's going to be tough for most of the young guys to prove they belong on the field, especially if they're at a new position.
One guy I didn't mention is Hawley—I do hope to see him out on the wings again. Watch the Princeton tape from last year. He's got good instincts off the ground. He was getting 3 GBs a game just as a rotational wing player, without any actual run on offense or defense. Would be quite the story for him to come in as an attackman and develop into our best wing guy.

Well, a tall guy can have a pretty wide wingspan with that short stick.

Meh. I was always more interested in perhaps naming a gynecology wing instead of a lacrosse center.
That reminds me of a college friend who initially wanted to be a gynecologist. He became an ENT specialist instead.
Which led me to say “wrong holes, wrong holes”.

Quint's blurb for the Jays in his top 20 this week:
20. Johns Hopkins The Jays returned to practice on Thursday after more than a handful of days off due to a COVID super-spreader party at the WaWa ‘frat’, a longtime home of Blue Jay football players. The JHU administration put a hold on all Homewood campus activities. First-year coach Peter Milkman inherits a 2-4 team that didn’t experience fallball outside of captains' practices and had their preseason shortened a week. I’m jokingly changing his name from Milliman to Mulligan. ’We want more’ plays Ohio State on Saturday to kick off their Big Ten-only schedule.
The lineup will feature a healthy Joey Epstein on attack. You’ll see multiple players changing positions on the offensive side of the ball, and many playing dual roles A/M. Role designation has become meaningless — they are offensive players only. The rotation is likely to feature Connor DeSimone on attack. Freshman Brendan Grimes, Cole Williams, Cam Chauvette, Garrett Degnon, Evan Zinn, and to a lesser degree Brett Baskin, Jack Keogh, Casey McDermott and Jacob Angelus sharing runs from the midfield. The defense should be anchored by Jack Lyne and Lafayette transfer Beaudan Szuluk, with Owen McManus, Jared Reinson and freshman Scott Smith vying for minutes. The shorties and LSM (Conner Delaney) spots are major issues. LSM Jared Fernandez, a transfer from Syracuse, was injured this fall during a captains’ practice, and will be miss the year. If you don’t have capable defensive midfielders, you don’t have a defense. OSU transfer Josh Kirson or Ryan Darby will start between the pipes. Kyle Prouty will handle the face-off duties, and I would expect him to be OK with the rule adjustments. JHU will be clear-cut underdogs in six games against Maryland, Ohio State and Penn State.

So less Baskin is what Quint is saying
Re: Johns Hopkins 2021
I think he's saying less of all those guys listed after Baskin, at least compared to the first group? I for one would be surprised if Chauvette played over a few of those guys—namely Angelus—but perhaps QK is more plugged in than I.
Re: Johns Hopkins 2021
I was surprised by that as well. Quints reflections certainly seem like he got more out of Milliman than Petro in years past.

-Love wawa, but that's a major L. Having them next to Hillel on north charles was quite a juxtaposition.
-I did not know fernandez was out for the year
-Quint is going to pound the shorty and lsm issues until that's resolved.
-Reinson was one of the biggest defensive recruits of the last several years maybe since Jack Reilly or Pellegrino or Enright. It makes me wonder what these paragraphs would've looked like if Petro were still here.
-We had a lot of goals last year given up w/attackmen caught on d. Cole Williams/baskin back there scares me.
-Ohio State film room must be fascinating this week. Millimans cornell tape, Jamesons UMBC tape, Grant jrs tape, Petro tape of returning guys, recruiting tape, they know kirson.
