Still a lot of gray area in the new faceoff rules, Greg Gurenlian translates the rulebook.

Re: Here we go again with the Face Off
Glad Greg has finally come around on his positivity toward the SNG.
As I said before, it will definitely make faceoffs more competitive- more 50/50 GBs, quicker out of scrums, and allow it to be a more competitive postition- not just for specialists. Some will be stubborn and try to bring over Moto techniques, but they wont see a ton of success. This is less about power and more about quickness. Really, what's old is new again. The ones that will be succeeding will be fully embracing the new stance and grip. And shhh....don't tell anyone, but you'll also be seeing lots of techniques from the 90s early 00s.

According to Greg Gurenlian
Hearing that NCAA FO Covid protocol just for this spring. Ball down first. Players must stay 6 feet away from ball until told to go down. Officials from distance give cadence. If player takes too long to set up then possession will be awarded to other team.
Re: Here we go again with the Face Off
i don't think he's ever been against SNG, in fact watching him the past few years he seems to have used it a lot. I think him and the rest of the FOA are upset that there's constantly rule changes.kramerica.inc wrote: ↑Tue Jan 26, 2021 11:09 am Glad Greg has finally come around on his positivity toward the SNG.

I guess no one told Ashton Wood from Mercer that the new rules were supposed to make it harder to dominate and make it 50 / 50 balls. Kid just went 18 of 19.

Day 1 face off thoughts from Gurenlian and Ragonese.
Ref are far too loose on the rules.

Re: Here we go again with the Face Off
Denver and Utah faceoff guys were leaning halfway over the ball before the whistle. Not even feigning attempts to be perpendicular. Refs weren't interested in calling it. That's got to change quickly or it's gonna be a total mess.
Re: Here we go again with the Face Off
Face offs looked real clean to me, seems as if the new rules accomplished what they were intended to do.

Re: Here we go again with the Face Off
The ball often came out quickly but the leaning was terrible. The one step rule was never close to being called. Stathakis should have been called for withholding alot of times.
Re: Here we go again with the Face Off
what are the leaning rules?

Re: Here we go again with the Face Off
are you talking about the head of the crosse leaning and not being perpendicular?HopFan16 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 30, 2021 6:55 pmFrom the '21-'22 rulebook:
What's odd is leaning has always been illegal. Not a new rule. So maybe refs were thrown off by having to watch out for the new rules, and forgot about enforcing the existing ones.
i'm confused and didn't see it. what was leaning?
Re: Here we go again with the Face Off
^Yes, the head of the crosse was leaning, which is illegal. Refs are supposed to step in and straighten them out. But they were letting it go.

Your body can lean over the center line, but the stick has to stay straight and can't lean over.

Your idea makes good common sense, for all the reasons you mentioned. Put this man on the rules committee!WOMBAT, Mod Emeritus wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 3:47 am Saves the refs from having to watch everything. Including grips, early start, etc. As long as you both are behind your lines and the ball is in place, be prepared for a whistle at any moment.
The key skill then becomes getting a ground ball.
Not all this specialized stick, clamping stuff.

What? If you don't call those infraction you'll never get a ground ball. The best way to get alot of ground balls is to call the rules as written.Cletus wrote: ↑Sat Jan 30, 2021 7:14 pmYour idea makes good common sense, for all the reasons you mentioned. Well said too, DMac. More common sense. Especially the italicized section.DMac wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2020 10:31 pm Two guys clamping the ball down and circling in a wrestling match of sorts shouldn't happen on a lacrosse field. Clamp and scrape...it's about quickness, not who the better wrestler is. Doesn't surprise me that the rules committee is looking at the face off again, they sure as hell need to make a decision and stick with it though.
Re: Here we go again with the Face Off
...and that's what it amounted to today, ball came out and was in play pretty quickly. This is the main reason I wanted to see this game, to check the new face off rules out. Mission accomplished as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Here we go again with the Face Off
SNG gives more loose balls but leaning and allowance to take more then one step after the clamp could put an end to loosies.
Re: Here we go again with the Face Off
Nothing more than the same ol' story....just enforce the rules and all's well.
