Hey. Remember my immigration plan ? I've been for legitimizing the renewable residency of all non-felon, self supporting, undocumented persons already here.
That's why I'm also for border security & closing the asylum loophole, to reduce the pull & staunch the surge which amnesty will generate.
Initially, it looked like Trump was heading in that direction.
It was a NYT headline. It has to be true.
Trump initially indicated he'd sign anything that passed Congress, so long as it gave him something he could call a Wall. Including the Gang of 8 bill.https://www.rollcall.com/news/politics/ ... ation-bill
President Donald Trump might be open to comprehensive immigration legislation — or maybe not.
Sen. Joe Manchin IIItold reporters following his meeting with Trump and other senators on Thursday that the president was open to the so-called Gang of Eight immigration bill that passed the Senate in 2013 with a supermajority but never saw the light of day in the House.
After the meeting, Manchin told CQ Roll Call that the senators in the room “were all pleasantly surprised” that Trump said he was open to reviewing that legislation. “He’s very inquisitive, you know? And realizes that we don’t have a good immigration policy in the United States, and that was very refreshing to hear because we know we don’t.”
...Trump, during the meeting, said he is “willing to look at” anything the Gang of Eight might come up with, and expressed his support for the group trying again, the official said.
Manchin said that it was Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., who raised the issue during their meeting and was explicit about what the bill did.
“So at that time, that’s when, I think it was Sen. Alexander at the time, brought it up and says, ‘I believe you can be the president that changes that.’ And then explained to him the Gang of Eight, the bill that we had, and he basically seemed very interested in knowing more about that bill and people getting together and breaking it down and let’s look at it,” Manchin told CQ Roll Call.
The 2013 immigration bill, had it been signed into law, would have ramped up interior enforcement and border security in return for a pathway to legal status for a majority of the 11 million people living illegally in the United States. The bill passed the Senate by a 68-32 vote, but then-Speaker John A. Boehner, R-Ohio, declined to allow House consideration, due to pressure from conservatives.

So we get status quo, and Trump can keep right on hiring illegals at his properties.runrussellrun wrote: ↑Thu Jan 31, 2019 11:30 am be specific....what "policy" is Miller setting that is law? No, no----my fault again, poor posting. Where we disagree is that you think Trump is trying to pass a reform bill.old salt wrote: ↑Thu Jan 31, 2019 1:13 am

I told you two things when Trump was elected, and before he took office.
One was that they wouldn't repeal and replace Obamacare. Simply because the R base is the biggest "taker" of government services when it comes to health care subsidies. That coupled with the simple fact hat you can't take the government subsidies away, while at the same time get premiums to go down, and you know that they're bluffing and full of crap. And shocker, as I predicted, they didn't pass a bill...or didn't simply repeal "the worst bill ever" in Obamacare. If it was so bad----repeal it. Boom. Done.
They didn't do that. And Republican voters learned NOTHING from this obvious lack of action..... what you are asking as voters is impossible.
Second was that they wouldn't pass an immigration reform bill. And this was even worse that the Trumpcare debacle---they didn't even bother to get a bill to the point where they'd hold a vote. These politicians are playing you, and have no intention of fixing a problem that every other 1st world country in the world has handled just fine. They profit from the status quo, and won't fix this. Period.
That is where we disagree. You think they are working in earnest. I think they're full of it and are getting rich on the current system.
As for immigration itself, I know you have a 100% reasonable plan that I would have no problem supporting!

WAPO is now reporting that Trump's flagship Bedminster resort / golf course had an established pipeline of illegals coming into the country from a town in Costa Rica. Large numbers involved in the pipeline over time. The whole town is talking freely about the situation.

Proof that he knows immigration is an issue, don’t underestimate why he knows things, he’s quite smarter than you give him credit.
A fraudulent intent, however carefully concealed at the outset, will generally, in the end, betray itself.
