What needs to be done?
Voter I.D. - how does it get implemented?
A review of '20 election - what worked, what didn't.....a bi-partisan group is required.
Do we really want one system or stay with 50+ methods?
Election Reform
Re: Election Reform
1. Early in person voting.
2. No excuse mail in voting, with the option for states to go all mail in if they want to.
3. Widely available drop boxes located in highly visible locations near government buildings with 24/7 video surveillance. Because the best/easiest way to do "mail-in" voting is for the ballots to go out by mail but come back primarily via drop box.
4. Cut off the balloting at poll close on election day (rather than waiting several days for the mail to come in). But to be fair, to implement this rule you need to do #3. If you don't do #3, then you have to extend ballot delivery until after election day.
5. Clarify and publicize common sense rules around "ballot harvesting." FYI, these rules mostly already exist and are already enforced. Here in Colorado, the rule is that you can drop off a max of 10 ballots for friends, neighbors, family members, etc. A lower limit (say 4 or 5) would be fine too.
6. Start processing and counting mail-in ballots well in advance of election day.
7. Track ballot mail, return, process and count via email, text and online.
8. Automatic motor voter registration. The identity requirements for getting a driver license that meets Real ID standards are about as high as they get. So it is effortlessly easy to meet any/all concerns about voter ID by relying on the existing driver license infrastructure.
9. Reboot the Voting Rights Act pre-clearance procedures. So that pre-textual suppressive voting "integrity and security" measures can't be implemented without passing some level of good faith reasonableness. Come on -- only one single drop box for all of Harris County, TX (4.75 million population). Do this and you don't need a national standard (which is fine/good).
Thing is, there's really nothing to study. All of this is already known/established/existing best practices. Just has to be implemented.

....nothing we do. NOTHING. Will stop claims of election fraud from Republican voters, so long as Republican lose elections. The entire conversation is pointless, because you can't fix what isn't broken.
The REAL question is: how do you get these Americans to take the tinfoil hats off?
My answer? FoxNation and the Republican party have to turn their backs on this nonsense. And we all know that that won't happen.

Re: Election Reform
Well, at least the Voting Rights Act revival will get a vote in the House and also the Senate (even with the 60 vote filibuster in place). And you could maybe see 10 GOP Senate votes for the VRA. People forget, but the last renewal of the VRA (2006) passed the Senate 98-0.
The problem is that the painfully naive 2013 version of CJ Roberts figured that (with such large bi-partisan support for the VRA historically) Congress would just revise it in the normal course in accordance with his Shelby County guidance. I'm sure the 2021 version of Roberts really wishes he had a do-over on that decision.
The GOP suppression problem was kept in check pretty well by the VRA, and Roberts allowed that to be blown up. With people recently being killed inside the Capital over election Big Lies, it might be possible to get this fixed to some extent by Congress.

REAL ID is a federal standard, and you can go to the DMV and get a compliant identification card that's not a driver's license.foreverlax wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 1:19 pm Agreed on all 9 points.

We should also allow same-day voter registration at polling places as well.

Re: Election Reform
All voter rolls need to be scrubbed against the USPS change of address data base before ballots are mailed out & again before they are counted.
This should be a standard automated process.
What address did Tom Friedman use to register when he voted in the GA runoff ?
How do you ensure that college students & transient workers, who may have legit addresses in 2 states or jurisdictions, vote in only 1 state or jurisdiction ?

The standard of simplicity is not more, it is less. This is why I have always argued that a vote simply follows your Fed/State ID. And if you are a shut-in, military, in transition, out of the county, you simply request a mail in ballot. You can register the day of if you want by presenting your Fed/State ID. Each states database would then perform a simple 'checksum' against each individual to verify no more than 1 vote per name/address/Fed/State ID Number.
A fraudulent intent, however carefully concealed at the outset, will generally, in the end, betray itself.

Oh please. The USPS has often screwed up my change of address, and not once have they gotten my stop-delivery order right in the past few decades. Making voting rights dependent on the accuracy of their database is ridiculous.
