I've reached my limit of Gazette articles so was unable to follow the link to the Snowden article in which he was quoted saying that Chaney had supported the Kunta Kinte plaque that was stolen by the KKK...but from the little bit I saw, Snowden was an aide to Janet Owens, a fellow Owens descendant thus relative of Chaney's and that's enabled the Snowden-Chaney connection.

But yeah, Chaney, founder of the Old South club wanted the statue of the last person to fire a shot for the Lost Cause moved to his family property to overlook a pond???

So MD.... how do you define a racist? Do they come in different colors? Are they just a bunch of backwoods, hillbilly rednecks that chew skoal and drive pick ups with rebel flags and have shotgun racks in their trucks? What do you have to be as a person to fit the MD lax definition of a racist? When I was in the army there was huge racial hatred and animosity between the soldiers from Guam and the Soldiers from Samoa. The animosity was so intense they would fight one another just how somebody looked at another person. My friend Albert Gomez was born on Guam. I asked him once What the heck was up with you and the Samoans. Why do you want to fight each other all the time. His answer was confusing but it was honest... because that is what we have always done. There was no logic to it that I ever understood. These folks from these two south pacific islands have hated one another for centuries. Albert didn't know why, that is just the way it always was. I bet you that today nothing has changed. Are they racists or do they only understand that is the way it's always been? Some of you folks think you can erase the memories of the past. How stupid are you all? Some people are always going to hate other people. Tearing down statues won't change why some people hate other people. It's real complicated. In their lives that is the way it has always been. Changing people's hearts and minds is not an easy thing to do.

Can't tell you anything about Samoans...but in this context, yes, racists and racism come in all sorts of forms and stripes. Racist views get expressed overtly by some, and far more insidiously by others.

Pretty good definition:
Prejudiced against or antagonistic toward a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.

As to statues and names of military bases and various other ways we as a society choose to honor, venerate, memorialize those who are worthy of such actually does matter. Who we choose to do so with matters a great deal, in fact, as it is our collective message to each other and to our children and their children who we find is worthy of such honor, veneration, memorialization. It is a clear and public expression of our values as a society.

I'm not in favor of a mob making these choices, but I darn sure believe it has been deplorable that we have not done so previously through our democratic processes. Indeed, if we're honest about it, that's because the majority of the white population just hasn't cared about the message sent...and some have fought to actually send that message of domination ongoing...That has been our collective value system. It should change and I think it finally is doing so.
