Army

Post by Matnum PI »

RT @ILPreps: 4⭐️ Haydn Sommer ’22, A, Culver (Ind.) / @91Maryland, committed to @ArmyWP_MLax today.

He was a key part of Fire's offensive attack at Elite Eight, rating an 88. "A really good right-handed QB whose key attribute is his speed."

Seems like an impressive kid. Army, Navy, Air Force attract a lot of special kids.

Too bad Tyrell Robinson doesn’t play lacrosse also.

The rankers were wrong about that guy,

That backfield is going to be tough for the Mids
to beat, this year.

Based on the way Navy is playing now, Army will be more than plenty of trouble with who they have currently...

All that water must freak them out, makes them worried Navy is coming? ;)

Chase Taylor isn't on the Army roster. Anyone know where he's headed?

Army put on the defensive too often in setback to defending champion Virginia

A week ago, Army lacrosse coach Joe Alberici was disappointed but accepting that his season-opening match with Massachusetts had been canceled over COVID issues with the Minutemen.

Then Alberici got a call from his standout attack Brendan Nichtern, who saw on TV that Virginia had also lost a match and had an open date. A few phone calls later, Army was set to face the defending national champions.

The game was delayed a day by poor conditions on the prime playing field so it moved to a usable practice field on Sunday, and Army got a needed wake-up call and early test of its abilities.

The No. 15 Black Knights struggled with their clearing game against an aggressive Virginia team and were dominated in the face-off game, allowing the No. 5 Cavaliers to dominate possession and the clock. Virginia scored four consecutive goals between the second and third quarters and rolled to a 14-9 victory in Charlottesville.

“I thought the guys played hard,’’ said Alberici, who felt his team was on the short end of a couple difficult calls. “I really feel like we're capable of better, and that's credit to Virginia – they put you under a lot of pressure in all phases of the game, and sometimes it makes you look not as good as you are.’’

Nichtern, the Patriot League preseason player of the year, scored twice and junior Aidan Byrnes tallied three times to pace Army, which had six of its top 15 players seeing first- or significant-action in their collegiate careers.

Alberici said he saw some improvements from a difficult scrimmage with Bryant a week earlier, notably strong six-on-six play in the offensive end, but three statistics stood out: Army was 10-for-19 on clears (Alberici expects closer to 90 percent success); it won only nine of 25 draws; and, Virginia dominated in groundballs 46-26.

“Those are just additional possessions, against a high-powered offense, that you’re giving back,’’ Alberici said. “Our guys held up okay; just any time you are going to give a talented team that many possessions it's going be tough to keep them in single digits.’’

Alberici felt preseason all-star Marcus Hudgins played well against Tewaaraton Award candidate Matt Moore, even though he scored three times. Payton Cormier also had three goals for the Cavaliers.

Army plays at No. 2 Syracuse at noon Sunday.

“We're not looking for any ‘attaboys’ or any pats on the back for being competitive in this game – I think this program is well beyond that,’’ Alberici said. “However, there are things you can learn when you play somebody at that level. They exposed things and now it's going to be up to us to work to be better at them and come out with that type of energy, and then some, against Syracuse, as well as better execution.
