Reposting this...it's too good and such a great explainer for anyone to understand why Democrats are clowns.

A few days ago, MDLaxfan made a post on one of these threads about the resilience of the American system. I can't recall now which thread, but no matter. It was, in my opinion, a really good and thoughtful post, and most of all it was hopeful, focusing on what I think he described as the coming together of the folks in the middle -- the center-leaning Democrats, Independents, and center Republicans -- standing up to the cult of Trump, in a way that no sitting GOP congressional figure has yet to do.

And I basically am buoyed by this as well. But I don't think the Trump affliction will be easily remedied, even if Biden wins the election. The froth off of Trump's breath, and FNC's service in his name, has created a population that is gravely and maybe irrevocably divided. And I am not sure we can cobble back together the manner of doing things that once, not too long ago, constituted basic, hardly questioned norms in our society, in politics, and in the office of the Presidency. Certain, I think if Trump is reelected, those norms will be just pages in history books, and lost to us for good.

It is true that almost as soon as Trump was elected and inaugurated, everyone -- me included, for sure -- chose up sides and caused the shrillest and most obvious divide in my lifetime. But Trump was a cause for concern that Jeb Bush and John Kasich or some other successful nominee of the GOP could never have been. His departure from the normative forms of politics and the Presidency was so large and important, that the division into teams -- the "resistance" and "the cult" -- just doesn't seem so crazy. It is where we were headed anyway, given the blather of talk television and talk radio and the demonization of our political opponents, which was well under way before this particularly crude and corrupt Presidency. I am told, here on these threads, repeatedly, that I hate America, hate the Constitution, and am not a "patriot." I know each of those three things to be untrue, but the fact that my "FLP" sensibility leads folks to shove me off that cliff is telling.

The last nearly four years have desensitized us. We elected a President who believed he could "move on her like a complain." And it has gotten worse from there. Trump's tax issues, his use of the Presidency to built cash flow into his golf clubs and resorts engender little comment from his supporters. His willingness to provide room and comfort to segregationists and white supremacists is now just one of those things. His use of diplomacy as a lever for personal electoral advantage, his diversion of congressionally approved funds to other purposes, his resistance to agreement to a transfer of power should he lose, his constant decrying of the fairness of the electoral process, his claims that it is rigged -- all of these things pass off without consequence, and as a result all of our norms have been torn down. Our sense of common purpose and identity, and the underpinning normative values of truth, adherence to facts, duty, faith in governance, and expertise are all standing at the Rubicon. I sure hope I'm wrong, but I think even if Biden wins, we will have enormous and enormously difficult work to do. If Trump wins, and we go another four years of this frenzied need for loyalty and idolatry, well then we are sunk.

Agree that if Trump wins we are sunk. I was talking to my cousin yesterday. He said 2016 was Hiroshima. If Trump wins, 2020 will be Nagasaki. I thought that was well put.

My most “optimistic” scenario if Trump wins is that he spends the next four years just lining his pocket and going after his perceived enemies. That will be terrible, of course, but the overall damage to the country will be limited. If, on the other hand, he goes Full Monty and truly tries to rip apart the institutions on which this country was founded and under which it has long prospered, heaven help us. Will the damage be permanent? I don’t think so, but I am concerned about that.

On the brighter side, if we can call it that, if Joe wins, he will have an awful lot of work to do to put the country back together. In fact, he won’t be able to accomplish enough in that regard in the first two years so he will need to retain control of the Senate (assuming, of course, the Ds take the Senate this year) in 2022.

What becomes of the Republican Party is the $64,000 question. Not being a Republican, I am not qualified to hazard a guess. Will the John Kasich/Jeb Bush wing recapture the party? That would be good, but I suspect not.

Who would rise up to lead the party? Wouldn’t surprise me if Trump, himself, tries to do that. He claims he would slink away and play golf if he lost, but I don’t think so. If his health remains decent, it wouldn’t surprise me if he were to try to run again in 2024.

My crystal ball doesn’t extend out that far so I have no idea who would get the Republican nomination in 2024. But, Pete, I hate to break it to you. It won’t be Miss South Dakota.

Man, this post shows just how badly the media misleads guys who eat their drek up.

First, the party you need to worry about is your own, regardless if Joe wins or loses. Your party is coming apart at the seams, with the majority itching for outright Venezuelan socialism. A minority of the party of which you presumably fit is the legacy brand of the D's, but you are flailing today, unable to drive the direction of the party, held together by a 78 year old dementia riddled candidate. When he goes, nelly bar the door!

Trump is likely to win precisely because of this dynamic; very few FLP's will vote this year, costing Joe big votes in critical states. This is why you will need to cheat as much as possible, to overcome a yawning gap in voter enthusiasm.

So far as the R's, if Trump loses, you won't hear from him relative to the party again. The next leadership stable as of today is the following, and in order:

Nikki Haley
Kristi Noem
Ron DeSantis

This is where the money is headed today. And I know because I get asked all the time. My preliminary guess is that one of the two women separates herself from the pack, and that Ron is offered VP in 2024. All candidates from 2016 have disappeared off the fundraising requests. So far as Kasich and Jeb Bush, they would fare better in a Democratic primary than a Republican one.

Do not listen to the media which wants to promote Hawley and Pence...they won't attract any major donor money, and both fare poorly in personal Q ratings.

You really need to talk to people in the know, or at least read independent news. You are so off the scent, you 'll die of hunger.

That pollyanna'ish silliness is your thing. We have 351,000 new cases in the last seven days, around 17,800 of which are in Florida. Fifty thousand new cases a day, and testing is still too random and slow. Still, that's a lot of contact tracing.
