I found confirmation of my opinion that the best Lacrosse Team that I have ever seen or played against (bar done) was the 1965 Navy Team. My sophomore year we had only one loss and Navy beat us approx 14-5 and the game wasn't that close. They were terrific.

Plus there were less than 35 players on the Team. (relevant for the size of lacrosse rosters and Navy players just "loved" Coach Bilderbach.)

Re: Johns Hopkins 2021
At some point they were no longer allowed to let the football players also play lax.
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
Re: Johns Hopkins 2021
Very cool stuff, thanks for posting.
Why weren't/aren't football players allowed to play both lacrosse and football?
Was fairly common back then for lacrosse coaches to have a little chat with the
football boys and recruit them for the teams (Hobart sure did this).

Navy football players played lacrosse to stay in shape for football. Just the opposite at Hopkins. Joe Cowan, QB and punter was drafted(or invited to camp)by the Colts.DMac wrote: ↑Mon Sep 28, 2020 6:10 pm Very cool stuff, thanks for posting.

Fallball and Spring football have ended playing both sports. Fear of injury may be a factor.

Re: Johns Hopkins 2021
This was an issue of great concern when our exemption was threatened where d3 football coaches didnt want kids getting d1 lax $. There have been a few examples of late. There was a kid on the 07 team whose dad played for the jets-walker, who was a lax walkon and also played for margraff. We had a recruit decommit from lax to play football at duke and later made the nfl. Bobby Bensons brother joe was recruited to start at qb at michigan but chose hop lax instead I think he told me once. Not sure if football at hop was a consideration.DMac wrote: ↑Mon Sep 28, 2020 6:10 pm Very cool stuff, thanks for posting.

Re: Johns Hopkins 2021
Pat Donnelly was 1st Team AA as a Halfback in Football. As I recall. he was about 225 lbs and very fast.
My roommate from prep school was starting attack for Harvard. Donnelly guarded him. He told me that it was the first time in his life that a defenseman was not only bigger than him, but also faster AND had better stickwork.
Navy ran 3 midfields and there was really no difference in size, speed and skill. Their middies would pick you "way out" from the goal and pressure you all game long.
Notice the observation in the article on their depth, Ogilvie who was the 3rd goalie on the 1965 Team, was 1st team AA in 1967. Now that is what is known as "depth".

Re: Johns Hopkins 2021
One more observation from the article which I liked and hope will be reflected in the approach by JHU's new coaching staff.
Jimmy Lewis says, "Bildy ran an organization that was focused on winning, but he also recognized that you could still have a good time.... Bildy used the practices to develop the strategy and plan for the games. Come game day, he had the trust and confidence to let us play."
No yelling and calling out players. Good instructional practices, and then let the players execute and play The Game.

Re: Johns Hopkins 2021
I remember in the '67 game Schnydman leaving his feet to hit Donnelly, who was clearing. Jerry bounced off and I don't think Pat even noticed.Chitown wrote: ↑Mon Sep 28, 2020 11:48 pm Pat Donnelly was 1st Team AA as a Halfback in Football. As I recall. he was about 225 lbs and very fast.

Re: Johns Hopkins 2021
Do you think they could have beaten the 1979 Hopkins team, assuming the teams used similar stick technologies? Greenberg against Jimmy Lewis would have been an epic match-up. The 79 Hop defense was flat out scary and they also ran three elite midfields. Jeff Cook, Jimmie Zaffuto and Frank Cutrone at attack. Piggie in goal. Radebaugh at the face. They blew NC state off the field in the semifinals and NC State had Stan Cockerton and a record setting offense. Not sure anybody hangs with the 79 team in the playoffs, honestly. Greenberg was absolutely dominant that year. No comparison I can think of.Chitown wrote: ↑Sun Sep 27, 2020 1:54 pm A change of topic in these desperate soul-sucking times .

Yup, definitely an issue. Check this guy out and see what he did for a winless and just very sad Hobart football program.jhu06 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 28, 2020 10:19 pmThis was an issue of great concern when our exemption was threatened where d3 football coaches didnt want kids getting d1 lax $. https://hwsathletics.com/news/2015/7/15 ... rangements.
He was a frothing at the mouth football maniac and my HS coach. My brother was the starting QB and Captain of the team in his Jr year (I was the center...we grew up doing that from pee wee league on...shotgun offense, gotta have a good snapper). My brother went to basketball camp (basketball was his game, was Captain and leading scorer of the hoops team too) in the summer between his Jr and Sr year and got back a few days after double practices had begun. Davis was in his face screaming that he wanted him thinking football, wasn't buying his getting back after practices had begun. My brother told him to go phukk himself in so many words and quit (yes, so did I...wasn't going to put up with his BS anymore...wasn't a matter of not being able to take it).
Any idea why he was let go at Bart? Yup, did pretty much the same thing there, started telling his lax boys he didn't want them playing lacrosse.....at Hobart, can you imagine????....wanted them thinking football year 'round. Football, football, football!!!! There can definitely be some conflicts there.

I am always reluctant to compare teams from different Eras and using different technologies (sticks, sticks, sticks!).
In 1967. JHU's defense had a Goalie that was 2nd Team AA, Hank K that was the Schmeiser Award winner for 2 straight years (and 1st Team AA for those years), Mike Clark that would be the Schmeiser Award winner in the succeeding years, John Cardillo who was "only" 2nd team AA, on Attack:Joe Cowan (1st Team AA), Downie McCarty (1st Team AA) and Phil Kneip (2nd Team AA) and lots of good fast middies. And all with size. That is what it took to beat Navy in 1967, a team that didn't have Jimmy Lewis, Pat Donnelly, Lanier, Henderson, etc.
Navy in 1965 had all that talent, and with lots of depth. They just kept running the whole game. Who really knows how they would compare to a team in a different Era, BUT US Lacrosse picked 1965 Navy Team and explained its reasons I will go with its reasoning.
