5. MARYLAND
2020 record: 5-1

Last seen: Fending off Albany 14-13 and getting ready to contend with Virginia in a rematch of a 2019 NCAA quarterfinal.

Initial forecast: It’s always to safe to bank on the Terrapins to hover around the top five, even when they have to contend with the departure of a star or two. Jared Bernhardt’s presumed exit deprives Maryland of one of the sport’s best offensive talents, but the Terps could very well withstand his loss. Logan Wisnauskas (24 goals, 12 assists), Anthony DeMaio (10 goals, 11 assists), Daniel Maltz (12 goals, six assists) and Bubba Fairman (five goals, six assists) are all expected back. Toss in Griffin Brown (21 goals, five assists at Colgate) and Eric Holden (20 goals, seven assists at Hobart) as graduate transfers, and Maryland is loaded on offense. Defense was the problem last year, with five of the Terps’ opponents reaching 12 goals, and coach John Tillman made a rare in-season goalie switch, turning to freshman Logan McNaney after four games. Opponents shot better than 30 percent against Maryland, and tightening that up will probably be the difference between simply being solid and contending for a national title.
Perhaps not an unreasonable ranking if you assume Bernhardt does not return. I don't know who the other star lost is.

Agreed. No other star lost. And if Bernhardt comes back (still no peep from MD on this), the upgrades of Holden and Brown make the offense the best in the nation. Better than Duke with Sowers. With Bernhardt back, that offense can go fast, slow, and anywhere in between. It will have stretch shooters (missing last season). It will have elite lefty and righty shooters. They will go 2 lines at the MF without much of a drop off.

Even without Bernhardt coming back I could more than justify 3rd even, forget 5th. Still an incredibly deep offense that’s as good as anyone’s; losing no one on the defensive end and added talent at that position. Returns in face off and goal. They were gonna be a Top 5 team last year if the season played out and only lost 1 meaningful contributor. Throw in transfer portal success and that’s an elite team.

*If* Bernhardt came back, you could credibly rank them #1

Let's not forget the plethora of freshmen attack stars Tillman has coming in, and the Burlace brothers on defense. The change in faceoff stance should work in our favor because of superior coaching. If Jared comes back forget about who will be the champs. And if he doesn't, I still love our final four chances. In many years Tillman has achieved to near perfection with less talent then he has this year.

The Terps just get BJ Burlace this year and then add Colin Burlace next year.

The Terps offensive talent looks better than some of Tillman's final four teams in the the past, but the Terps' defense has looked a little subpar the last two seasons. That is why picking up BJ Burlace is such a nice plus.

Even though the Terps have a top ranked LSM in Schaller and a quality D recruit in Stamos, I'd still like to see a top 20 defenseman added to the 2022 class.

5-star goalie, 5-star LSM, 5-star D. Need some offense to balance it out, but that's an elite, elite crop on the defensive end for 2022

According to the Diamondback these teams are not allowed to practice:
baseball, field hockey, gymnastics, men’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s lacrosse and wrestling.

Looks like Brandau is keeping busy with working out at the Goaliesmith camps. They are run by the Gvonzden brothers. Wisnauskas is still working the camps as a shooter.

Byrd looks to be getting a new field. Odd time to be putting it down. They had all summer.

Might have been an issue getting people to campus with COVID during the summer.

My understanding is that the administration is not allowing in person practice for these teams

On a MD sports site it was claimed that a lot of the recent COVID outbreaks for MD athletes were from men's lacrosse. I believe the teams listed above all had positive player tests and are therefor halting practices for two weeks. This happened to football earlier in the summer.

His dad was a 1 man fastbreak. I remember he had a huge goal in the great semifinal upset of Syracuse in '97.

In the John Tillman era, Maryland has continually reloaded.

That looks to remain the status quo in College Park in 2021, as the Terrapins are stacked from front to back and look ready to get back to Championship Weekend.

Logan Wisnauskas has been playing attack for the Terps.

It is a bit of an oversight not to mention Kyle Long with the offense. He started last season injured, but when he returned contributed 7 pts. in 4 games.

The Terps bring in 3 top 20 attack recruits: Eric Malever, Daniel Kelly and Jack Koras. With the Terps not holding fall practice, it is hard to know how they will fit in, particularly early in the season.
With the Terps returning all their starting long poles, it is hard to know how BJ Burlace will fit in ( at close or lsm) but it is nice to be one up. BJ is bigger than Neufeldt, and was listed at 6'1", 200 lbs. on Yale's roster.

The Terps return all four regular ssdms: Puglise, A.Smith, Higgins, and Coffman.
