Is University of Toronto open now? Are they locking their students in the Dorms, or not?

amazing that Ontario has such a low infection rate, considering that colleges will be open . right?

Are Ontario schools open for younger kids?
UK and Canadian schools have just recently re-opened. Pretty much full time and in person. Very much TBD how that will go for them.

But recognize that the UK and Canada are on a different planet Covid-wise than where the USA is. Which is especially striking given how horrendous the UK was at first. 7 day average daily deaths:

USA 864
UK 7
Canada 4
and lets not concern ourselves with how they got on a different planet than us, if you really think that. What's different? Masks?

Political leaders who listen to the pandemic experts, and lead their population by example.

Pretty much what we do NOT have now in the US.

simple google search re Sturgis and South Dakota.

Re 5 week timeline from super spreader events? Observation again and again and again over these months...people kept estimating 2-3 weeks, but that's more when the very first deaths may occur from a super spreader event, most take longer in the hospital as the medical folks fight to keep them alive. The bolus continues a bit from there. Someone may quibble with this 5 week, which I wouldn't debate, other than to say that it's typically longer from the event than people tend to think.

If working is watching TV feeds and tweeting about them. Actual work is quite minimal, and he has gone golfing more than any recent president by a long shot (often 2x per week).

My daughter, a resident physician, sometimes works seven 12 hour shifts in a row in a hospital. That is close to a month of Trump working...

Are we now saying that political leadership and public health decisions and messaging don't matter, it's just that Americans are "hard-wired" to do the opposite?

Really, we're such idiots, because we're Americans, that we can't come together in a national emergency and pull in the same direction, given leadership that promotes public health science first and foremost???

I don't buy that.

I do buy that there will always be some idiots.
Everywhere.

In China they put them in 'isolation camps' simply for being idiots...but other countries were certainly not so draconian.

Other reports say he was thrown out for chirping, which makes a lot more sense. For one thing, why would wearing a mask be within the jurisdiction of umpires? For another, this is Joe West. As a Trumper, he is highly unlikely to be pro mask.

Right. And you're telling me we didn't do that at the Water Cooler to both Obama and Bush, right? Come on man.
runrussellrun wrote: Mon Sep 07, 2020 7:15 am Actually, I have no idea what your point is regarding being American. What is the US doing differently than, say, our neighbors up north?
Not wearing masks, for starters. They also have a far better health care system for the population as a whole-----while millions of Americans don't have access to a doctor.

Remember how you said the number one problem in America is poverty, not race? So follow your own advice: what do poor people have in every other 1st world country that Americans don't have? That's right: easy access to health care. Gee, ya think that's a factor in a pandemic?

Then there's getting clear messaging from a central government, coupled with a citizenry that will actually do what they are told to do, because they believe in a greater good.

In America? Have a look at Pete Brown's posts. He, and millions just like him, think that half the nation is "the enemy"....more of an enemy than the Russian, Iranians, or N Koreans. Ya think that has an effect on behavior when the .gov has the "wrong" letter by his or her name?

So as I say, the problem isn't just Trump and Congress (although their lack of economic help is what made our GDP fall off a cliff).

It's us. WE are the problem.

runrussellrun wrote: Mon Sep 07, 2020 7:15 am Yes, no one cares about Event 201, put on by Johns Hopkins. Nothing to learn ....got it.

And that if you live to 60, you already have lived enough and need to get out of the way so the rest of us can live. Old R3 has no idea his mentality is part of the problem. Ask him if he will take the vaccine.....

. . ...you couldn't resist bringing up Sturgis. Just think of it as a BLM fiery but mostly peaceful protest & you'll feel better.

How many fiery but mostly peaceful protest super spreader events has Canada had ?

Americans (who are not personally high risk) see angry mobs in the streets & ask why they should stay home or avoid public gatherings.
They see feckless politicians encouraging the mass protests then scolding them for going to church or a funeral.
They're not as stupid as you seem to think they are.

no Salty, I was responding to a discussion about Sturgis and South Dakota's rapidly escalating case and test positivity rates.

I pointed out that there's only been one death so far traced to it, but a whole lot of cases fast. The deaths will likely follow some weeks out from now.

I did not bring it up.

Try reading the discussion next time.
