Let's begin with the gals who it at least appears got angry at some sort of poster the woman videoing was holding? Couldn't tell whether the kid was wearing the hat and someone knocked it off, or just picked it up off the ground and refused to give it back...

These gals were way, way, way out of line. Really awful way to handle whatever disagreement they had with the others.
Not ok in the slightest.

On the other hand, we don't see whatever was said or done by the a-holes on the other side...certainly the woman videotaping was a total a-hole herself, clearly inflaming the potential for violence at each step. Huge jerk. Would not be surprised to learn she'd been inflammatory before the video began, inciting the conflict.

The only innocent in this is the boy, who is basically being used as a prop by the woman (mom?). Really unfortunate that he was put in this position, and awful that he was mistreated by the women PO'd who took the hat.

So, I come down on the side of the boy. He serves an apology from all the darn adults.

I'm very clear that the women were way, way, way out of line 100% of the time on the video. Jerks, a-hole behavior. Angry idiots.

And I'm not attempting to draw an equivalency to the mom, though she too is obviously a huge a-hole, and we don't know what she said or did prior to the event, which for all we know could have been worse than what we see while she films...I have zero issue with her filming, nor of defending her kid, if he needed such. We just don't know the whole story...but just on the video, yeah, she's an a-hole too.

My sympathies are for the kid, none of the adults.
They're all gross, though it's possible that some of those who later became involved were trying to do the right thing, defuse it, retrieve the hat etc, with a minimum of continued battling. Hard to tell for sure.

But the primary 'combatants', the three women, are all jerks.
On who is maybe the least worse jerk, I'd give a nod to the mom, perhaps, simply because of the righteous anger a mom might well feel if her kid was involved...but I dunno for sure, as it's certainly possible she was an instigator of the conflict and we just don't see it on the tape.

BTW, I know what my brother-in-law in my basement would say...I'm a loser, my wife is a loser, we're both failures in business, 40 years of failures, my wife should have never married me, we know nothing at all about how things really work, etc, etc. He's told me and my wife exactly that...in the last two weeks.

Remember when I said he'd gone to New Orleans? He went to meet a guy he'd met at one of those many numerous real estate flipping conferences to look at "300 tax lien properties" in Mississippi...he took $35k out of his IRA to invest in bidding for them...sure thing...meanwhile, he's been rehabbing a house in SE DC for the past 7-8 years (supposed to be done in first six months) so that he can rent it...all done except water and air...about $15k work to complete...so no rent for 7 years...and he doesn't contribute financially here where he lives and eats dinner each night...

His 24 foot sailboat he lost for non payment of his bills. His $100k motor boat was literally left to rot, now 100% loss.

On the "fiscal conservative" let me be clear that I don't see that as simply meaning lower government spending = good.

Rather, I think it's critical to look at what is "spending" and what is "investment". I think it's important to be rigorous at looking at ROI, and continuously testing assumptions made. I don't favor continued "investment" that proves not to produce the necessary ROI simply because it's an expected program and has a constituency. They should be evaluated again and again.

But spending really can have a payoff beyond the immediate. I think this way in business as well, I think about long term over short term.

On the other hand, in business and my personal life, I need to think about limited resources and what is truly necessary to spend and what can be eliminated or deferred with little cost to the long term.

You're probably correct that both parties have their own ways to "screw things up".
That said, I'm voting for a change.

Let's begin with the gals who it at least appears got angry at some sort of poster the woman videoing was holding? Couldn't tell whether the kid was wearing the hat and someone knocked it off, or just picked it up off the ground and refused to give it back...

These gals were way, way, way out of line. Really awful way to handle whatever disagreement they had with the others.

On the other hand, we don't see whatever was said or done by the a-holes on the other side...certainly the woman videotaping was a total a-hole herself, clearly inflaming the potential for violence at each step. Huge jerk. Would not be surprised to learn she'd been inflammatory before the video began, inciting the conflict.

The only innocent in this is the boy, who is basically being used as a prop by the woman (mom?). Really unfortunate that he was put in this position, and awful that he was mistreated by the women PO'd who took the hat.

So, I come down on the side of the boy. He serves an apology from all the darn adults.

He went to meet a guy he'd met at one of those many numerous real estate flipping conferences to look at "300 tax lien properties" in Mississippi...he took $35k out of his IRA to invest in bidding for them...sure thing...meanwhile, he's been rehabbing a house in SE DC for the past 7-8 years (supposed to be done in first six months) so that he can rent it...all done except water and air...about $15k work to complete...so no rent for 7 years...and he doesn't contribute financially here where he lives and eats dinner each night...

His 24 foot sailboat he lost for non payment of his bills. His $100k motor boat was literally left to rot, now 100% loss.

On the "fiscal conservative" let me be clear that I don't see that as simply meaning lower government spending = good.

Rather, I think it's critical to look at what is "spending" and what is "investment". I think it's important to be rigorous at looking at ROI, and continuously testing assumptions made. I don't favor continued "investment" that proves not to produce the necessary ROI simply because it's an expected program and has a constituency. They should be evaluated again and again.

But spending really can have a payoff beyond the immediate. I think this way in business as well, I think about long term over short term.

On the other hand, in business and my personal life, I need to think about limited resources and what is truly necessary to spend and what can be eliminated or deferred with little cost to the long term.

You're probably correct that both parties have their own ways to "screw things up".
That said, I'm voting for a change.

I should not have questioned your integrity. I have had plenty of coffee and the drugs are working fine so I can rephrase it for you. I know a boatload full of republicans and they are all a bunch of odd ducks in my book. You may be the oddest of all the republicans ducks that I know. These are humane responses, and they certainly don’t hurt. But they are no substitute for government policy. For much of the pandemic, many people out of work were able to, if not keep pace with these super-savers, at least stay afloat because of federal aid. Now, in the absence of comprehensive support, the gainfully employed will keep piling up money, while millions of other people strain to make ends meet.

Of course you are completely off base, no matter how many times you say it. BLM does not devalue other lives. BLM suggests that not all lives are equally at risk in the course of everyday activities, and that black lives appear to be at considerably more risk when doing relatively ordinary legal things, like jogging in the evening. It is so simple to understand this, that a misunderstanding and assertion that BLM is intended to devalue other lives has to be deliberate, and part of an agenda.

We could talk about BLM in the long and difficult context of this country's history, or in closer perspective, in connection with black lives' interactions with law enforcement. But this notion -- that BLM elevates one set of lives over all others, even Uighurs -- just makes the discussion sad, stupid, and maybe even something more repulsive.
