You raise those taxes until the budget is balanced, and every government service citizens get is covered and paid in full.
I have a question for you: what percentage of the government's budget should be covered by tax on businesses?
Government controls all production.

Pete, Switzerland's national taxes are lower than their Canton taxes (think: States, like in America)Peter Brown wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2020 5:49 pm Also Switzerland spends 10% on average of its GDP on government. They owned by the UK too?

So that 10% is just the Federal taxes, my friend. It's only about a third of the taxing total. The other two thirds of tax revenue is collected by the Cantons. Switzerland is technically and officially the "Swiss Confederation".
So what happens when you add up all the taxes as a percentage of GDP, Pete?
It's at about 33% of GDP.
I can do this all day Pete.

I did not reply because it's useless. I could point out the complexity of the Swiss tax code, a country I have no doubt almost no one here has ever dealt with to the extent of understanding their tax structure. You can google and try to learn what a 'swiss fiscal deal permit' is, should you be inquisitive enough. You should, so you understand why your seal approval clap is clownish rather than impressive.

The two questions are:
-how much tax collected in a fiscal year is sitting in government coffers at the end of a fiscal year, and
-what was the total GDP in all of Switzerland
That's it.
But sure, let's follow the Pete Model, and move total US taxation to 10%. We couldn't even afford public education on that, let alone the military that we have.
So long as the budget is balanced, I'm on board. Frankly, I'd love to see U of Florida shuttered. And all those State owned hospitals down your way. The Private Hospitals, too, because they're entirely bankrolled by Medicare.
Whatever works. Let's make Pete happy!

Pete, 6ft, Tech, C&S, ... You have to admit that they are cute, especially little C&S.
You take the total tax revenue. You take the GDP. You calculate the total percentage.
And you're here claiming this is "indefensible". Pete: please tell me that you're not in charge of the books at your firm.
Irrelevant. No matter how complex, at the end you are sitting with X dollars in Swiss and Canton coffers after tax is collected.Peter Brown wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 9:00 am did not reply because it's useless. I could point out the complexity of the Swiss tax code

I appreciate that...though I am always skeptical when someone wishes me well without asking for anything in return.

Re: Progressive Ideology
a Fan, maybe you can use your simple math to help me out here. This conversation is revolving around a very small nation of a little under 9 million people with almost no unemployment. The comparison to the US, population 320 million people with massive unemployment and mind boggling debt and expenses. How can a fair comparison be made between these 2 countries when it comes to taxation? I can see why a much lower tax rate would work in Switzerland than it ever possibly could in the US. How much of their GDP to the Swiss spend on national defense?a fan wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 12:04 pmTranslation: I use math. But Pete's nonsense answer that the total government spending as a percentage of GDP should be no more than 10% is laughable.
Florida's 2019 State Budget was $90 Billion.
Florida's 2019 GDP was $950 Billion.
That means total government spending as a percentage of GDP is about 9%.
So that means that in order for Pete to get his wish, Florida would have to go it alone. In other words, Florida would have to not accept one single penny from the Federal government for things like Medicare, Education, Medicaid, and Defense.
Does that sound feasible to you? Florida is going to provide its own nuclear defense using its current budget? Or heck, buy and maintain one single fighter jet?
As can I. But nowhere near the 10% Pete is claiming.cradleandshoot wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 4:09 pm I can see why a much lower tax rate would work in Switzerland than it ever possibly could in the US.

Re: Progressive Ideology
I hear ya, the conversation between you two was just not making sense to me. If we could balance our budget ( never gonna happen in my lifetime) then lower tax rates would make sense. There is a very fine line between taxes that are too high and taxes that are too low. You can't spend like our country has been doing and not pay for it.a fan wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 4:54 pmPete brought up Switzerland, not I.cradleandshoot wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 4:09 pm a Fan, maybe you can use your simple math to help me out here.
