icymi, sweden had a v good week with their case fatalities in relative terms.
their 4th week in a row after peak. by memory, it was:
680
477
550
~450
high 200s this week.
haven't seen whether extra protections at elder care facilities are working yet, or if the spread is decreasing as they do little testing (supposedly ramping!!). the last several weeks' icu numbers predicted a decline imo.

i continue to be interested in their outcomes as i thought for a long time we would be practicing sweden-like measures once we got out of our caves. with the attendant differences between cultures, yada.

gives me hope. thought the burn may be slower and it may still be and maybe jump some next week as this seems like too big a drop in a week or 2. we shall see.

Dr Birx presentation today was daunting for DMV residents.
The top 2 hot spots in the nation which have stubbornly plateaued & are not going down :
1. DC metro (incl NVA & adjacent MD counties)
2. Baltimore metro
https://www.aa.com.tr/en/latest-on-coro ... al/1850977

The national capital metro area has the US's highest positive COVID-19 rate, according to the doctor leading President Donald Trump's coronavirus task force Friday.

Dr. Deborah Birx told reporters at the White House "there is still significant virus circulating" in the Washington, D.C. region, which includes parts of Maryland, northern Virginia and the nation's capital.

The region is followed by Baltimore, Maryland; Chicago, Illinois and Minneapolis, Minnesota.

"Theses are the places where we have seen really a stalling, or an increase of cases as in Minneapolis," she said.

The governors of Maryland and Virginia have slowly begun the process of reopening amid the dire economic situation, but D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has been reticent to do so. She has said the district's phased reopenings could begin as soon as next week if the situation continues to improve here.

''Fauci warns against reopening US too soon
The US’s top infectious diseases doctor warns US Senate of "serious consequences" if economy is reopened too soon.
Dr Anthony Fauci has said that if federal guidelines to reopen were not followed, "little spikes" would become outbreaks.

He also said the real US death toll is probably higher than the official tally of approximately 90,000.

His message is at odds with the tone of US President Donald Trump, who is keen to get the economy going again.

Some good news on the remdesivir front:
Remdesivir for the Treatment of Covid-19 — Preliminary Report
https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/N ... tured_home
Abstract
Background

Although several therapeutic agents have been evaluated for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), none have yet been shown to be efficacious.

Methods

We conducted a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of intravenous remdesivir in adults hospitalized with Covid-19 with evidence of lower respiratory tract involvement. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either remdesivir (200 mg loading dose on day 1, followed by 100 mg daily for up to 9 additional days) or placebo for up to 10 days. The primary outcome was the time to recovery, defined by either discharge from the hospital or hospitalization for infection-control purposes only.

Results

A total of 1063 patients underwent randomization. The data and safety monitoring board recommended early unblinding of the results on the basis of findings from an analysis that showed shortened time to recovery in the remdesivir group. Preliminary results from the 1059 patients (538 assigned to remdesivir and 521 to placebo) with data available after randomization indicated that those who received remdesivir had a median recovery time of 11 days (95% confidence interval [CI], 9 to 12), as compared with 15 days (95% CI, 13 to 19) in those who received placebo (rate ratio for recovery, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.12 to 1.55; P<0.001). The Kaplan-Meier estimates of mortality by 14 days were 7.1% with remdesivir and 11.9% with placebo (hazard ratio for death, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.47 to 1.04). Serious adverse events were reported for 114 of the 541 patients in the remdesivir group who underwent randomization (21.1%) and 141 of the 522 patients in the placebo group who underwent randomization (27.0%).
Conclusions

Remdesivir was superior to placebo in shortening the time to recovery in adults hospitalized with Covid-19 and evidence of lower respiratory tract infection. (Funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and others; ACCT-1 ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT04280705. opens in new tab.)
Full article is free at the New England Journal of Medicine (as are all coronavirus articles). Basic result: shorter recovery times, and lower mortality rate (7.1% vs 11.9%).

WTH are you talking about. You clearly see and correctly argue Fauci waffling...then blame Trump?

I assume you've heard the news that anyone who dares to disagree with Dear Leader immediately gets fired and winds up on the unemployment line. Obviously Dr Fauci has read the writing on the wall and knows that if he doesn't take back his words he'll be the next one that gets canned.

So Fauci has no spine and is afraid of Trump...that's your take on him?

What's your explanation for the sudden change of heart after only a couple of days or so? Did the Archangel Gabriel drop in on him and give him an epiphany? Or mebbe the Chosen walked on water and stumbled onto St Elmo's fire in full view of his cabinet and other yes men like Fauci???

There has got to be some explanation for why he says the exact opposite of what he said just days ago. So what is it?

According to a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll, 44 percent of Republicans believe that Bill Gates is plotting to use a mass COVID-19 vaccination campaign as a pretext to implant microchips in billions of people and monitor their movements

Why is Bill Gates doing this to us? Last night I saw a large wasp in my living room. I’m pretty sure it’s a bug.

The funny thing about this is that almost all of us willingly have smart phones that do the same thing much more efficiently as they are always talking to the network and have GPS.

How many of them get their principle news from Facebook?

I am more concerned that your immediate response is blame Trump. If believe Fauci is afraid of Trump, well, then,.....you could easily argue he can also be bought or shall we say, easily influenced. He should've just shut his mouth this entire time and stayed in the lab.

If they throw in a free lifetime subscription to Microsoft office, I’ll do it. If they include a GPS tracker, my daughter would probably be in favor as well so that when I go out wandering from the home in my dotage, she’ll be able to find me.

Once we beat Covid, how will Dems continue to harm the economy? What’s their next move?

If ever there was a symbol for bureaucrats going to far on lockdowns

https://www.wcax.com/content/news/Warre ... 02431.html

(Warren, Pa). The number of Covid cases in Warren county? Wait for it ............ 3. That's right, a grand total of 3, with zero fatalities.

And their are more examples of bureaucratic over reach across the country.

You think that is going too far - but for most people actually they would prefer to be safe. No vaccine possible by then, and the best drug treatment we have so far (remdesivir) is not an actual cure. So cancelling something that would normally lead to a mass gathering is unwise.

Of course, such a stupid move would allow certain people to claim how much more testing is being done, wouldn't it? Most epidemiologists were stunned by this basic error of commission by an allegedly world-class organization with no history of this sort of thing. This is the type of stuff that happens when someone declares war on the federal government. Nobody should be surprised.

This fish rots from the head.

hopefully, they do another backward looking study on hcq comparing patients in hospitals that were prescribed that medicine, quite probably bc of the shape they were in, and compare it to patients that weren't.
the sooner the better.
