75 years ago today The Nazis surrendered. VE day

My apologies to all our posters who deny American exceptionalism.
sorry, what do you actually think "exceptionalism" means, 6ft?

Were we alone in that fight?

Of course, there is much to love about our country, its ideals, even its myths, and certainly much to honor in those who have sacrificed for generations on behalf of these ideals and their fellow citizens.

To say that America has demonstrated strength and resilience, at times in extraordinary ways, is certainly true. I think most of us, probably all of us on these threads, are thankful to be Americans.

Unfortunately, the chest thumping also has an ugly side.
And, it also has some real flaws in logic and historical perspective.

https://foreignpolicy.com/2011/10/11/th ... tionalism/
And this was my response, 6ft.

It was the 'deny American exceptionalism" crack that provoked the response, not the celebration of VE Day, which is very much celebrated by our allies as well.
An unconditional positive statement about the USA cannot be allowed to stand without shade. [Hate America First]
Exactly my point. The idiots who think that the USA can only praised unconditionally in order to demonstrate "Love America" likewise think anyone who critiques at all is "Hate America First".

Idiots demanding blind obeisance... antithetical to the values that indeed make America great.

Our Navy's beating the virus by isolating our crews & keeping our ships at sea.
I can't recall seeing this many capital ships underway or preparing to sail, at the same time :

The Reagan is out of maint in Japan & underway. The TR is embarking crew making final preps to sail from Guam.

New recruits are being isolated for 2 wks before commencing boot camp.

Overly realistic missile test by the Iranians in the crowded Persian Gulf. Oooops.

I've got a part-time employee heading to Parris Island in August. Apparently the Marines there are quarantining at The Citadel prior to boot camp.

WITH A DISTRACTED PUBLIC, THE PENTAGON TRIES TO GET AWAY WITH KILLING INNOCENT CIVILIANS

"THE UNITED STATES’S WARS continue to rage in the Middle East and Africa against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic. Even in normal times, these conflicts got little public scrutiny. But with attention more occupied than usual, some U.S. military operations have been escalating even further. In recent years, these conflicts have become even deadlier for innocent people. The Trump administration has shown itself to be not just indifferent, but positively encouraging of the killing of civilians in foreign wars."

Our new light aircaft carrier, with 13 F-35's on deck.

Our 2 newest LHA big deck amphibs, America & Tripoli, each have the capacity to embark an air wing of up to 20 F-35B's, & the Marines to operate & maintain them, replacing the V-22s, helos, landing craft, wheeled vehicles & Marine battalion normally embarked.

Uhh... that was like one of the main thing the FLP types hated about BHO. Along with the lack of transparency. Us independents and the lefties on the board were very critical of the droning and other attacks.

The difference is that they chimed in with us independents when criticizing Obama, while virtually all of their opposites double down on praising Trump no matter what. There is a pretty stark difference. The R's are a fairly unified minority, while the D's are a coalition of everyone else, which is why the lose so damn much.

Obama was a center-right president.

And sometimes that harsh criticism was louder than a whisper. I disagree that BHO was a center right POTUS. When push came to shove he was center left all the way. If BHO was center right he would have been able to negotiate with the right wing Republicans. Bill Clinton was able to do so. When push came to shove with BHO his bottom line was I have a pen and a phone if you don't agree with what I want. I'll do it on my own. That is not center right, that is my way or the highway. I will give you this BHO did a very good job pretending to be something he was not. I don't have a problem with that BHO is who he is, not who he pretends to be.

"It seems the way to get fired by President Trump is not to commit wrongdoing, but to investigate it."

So far IGs at DoD, HHS, Intelligence and now State all fit this pattern.

Trump’s emergency powers worry some senators, legal experts

WASHINGTON — The day he declared the COVID-19 pandemic a national emergency, President Donald Trump made a cryptic offhand remark.

“I have the right to do a lot of things that people don’t even know about,” he said at the White House.

Trump wasn’t just crowing. Dozens of statutory authorities become available to any president when national emergencies are declared. They are rarely used, but Trump last
month stunned legal experts and others when he claimed — mistakenly — that he has “total” authority over governors in easing COVID-19 guidelines.

really?
Actually no. Pompeo, who was being investigated, recommended firing him. Trump did it.
At least, according to Fox.
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/congre ... or-general

Sen. Chuck Grassley, a longtime advocate for inspectors general who denounced Atkinson's ouster, joined Democrats Saturday in criticizing Trump's latest IG firing.

Grassley, R-Iowa, said the 2008 Inspector General Reform Act requires the president to provide Congress with a written explanation at least 30 days prior to removing an inspector general -- and Trump didn't meet this responsibility.

"As I’ve said before, Congress requires written reasons justifying an IG’s removal," Grassley said in a statement. "A general lack of confidence simply is not sufficient detail to satisfy Congress."
