I just read on Twitter that a 30 year old player has made the team. It sounds like a great story. I was wondering if any Big Red fans had any background regarding the situation

Is this possible? I thought there was an upper age limit imposed by the Ivy League or NCAA or someone. Remembering Dick Bertrand who was ineligible to play hockey his senior year because he had turned 26 [or 27]. Of course, that was 1969-70 season so things may have changed.

No, it was an age issue back then. Bertrand graduated in four years. Immediately after graduating, he replaced Harkness as head coach.

The player's name is Hunter Hughes. He was in the USMC from 2008-2014. He graduated Westlake High School. I wish him all the luck in the world.

Dick Bertrand was a policeman before deciding to return to university. He was able to play in the regular season, but (at a certain age) not NCAA post season play.

According to the Cornell lax website roster, Hunter Hughes is from Thousand Oaks CA and went to Thousand Oaks HS. He is a junior transfer and listed as a faceoff specialist. Conor O'Brien went to Westlake HS [he is a senior]. Having someone with Hughes' background in the lockerroom has to be a plus for the younger guys on the team.

Have a similar experience having spent eight years in the military (one in Vietnam) and playing at the age of 27. Some people make too big of a deal of it, IMO, but all in all definitely a plus to have that kind of a little more worldly and experienced person in the locker room. There is a level of respect shown by most, and a good coach will know how to tune in on that.
Glad to see it, will be pulling for Mr. Hughes.
(When I saw his age, I suspected he might have been in the military.)
