The Navy has deployed an Amphib big deck "carrier" LHD to treat Covid sailors. It's operating in the E Pac & accepted several covid+ sailors from the destroyer USS Kidd, which detached from escorting the TR when it returned to Guam & transited to E Pac to join counter drug ops already underway. Since the outbreak, the Kidd has been heading for homeport San Diego & should arrive today.
https://news.usni.org/2020/04/27/uss-ki ... -san-diego

The COVID-19 outbreak on Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Kidd (DDG-100) has resulted in 47 sailors testing positive for the virus, with two sailors flown to shore to receive treatment, the Navy reported Monday morning.

Additionally, 15 sailors have been transferred to amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD-8) to be monitored by the ship’s medical personnel, the service announced on Monday. The destroyer is currently heading to San Diego, Calif., to continue to offload infected crew and eventually disinfect the ship, a defense official confirmed to USNI News on Monday.

Kidd was taking part in a U.S. Southern Command enhanced counter-narcotics operation to disrupt the flow of drugs, which was announced on April 1.

Kidd is the second U.S. Navy ship to report having crew members who tested positive for COVID-19 while deployed. Kidd had been operating as part of the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group until USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) was sidelined in Guam with COVID-19 cases.

The Navy ordered Makin Island to rendezvous with Kidd in the Eastern Pacific over the weekend to help contain the spread of COVID-19. Makin Island has an embarked fleet surgical team, an onboard intensive care unit, ventilators and COVID-19 testing capability.

Makin Island and other ships of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group started operating off the California coast earlier this month. The ARG recently completed a Surface Warfare Advanced Tactical Training (SWATT) exercise but is remaining at sea to limit the risk of exposing crew members to COVID-19 while ashore.

"And now, sadly, it has happened: More U.S. deaths (58,365) from #COVID19 than from the long Vietnam War (58,220). Some protest the comparison--yet it was President Trump that declared "wartime" against an "invisible enemy". Sounds like a comparison to me." - Larry Sabato

c&s - yeah - summer survival was fun as I knew many of the "camp guards". Winter survival school was fun times as I had no idea who the camp guards were. Did SERE twice, winter absolutely sucked, frost bite but no time outs. Hogans Heroes was not too far off on many regards. Best laughs I have ever had came from both experiences. People home, bobbing like an apple in a drum, name, rank and serial number, people's chairs and napalm sticks to kids, over and over. Never lost a tooth though. Based on the quarantine, I would give for that.

MD,
one great lesson I learned is when you are out of your element - sometimes it is best to call it a day. I applaud your ability to hang tough but sometimes, call it a day. You have no clue what WE are chuckling about. My kid wanted to be a SEAL. Connected him with 4 or 5. After the first interview, nope. By the time he got to 5.....no way. Old saying, never be a "Been brother" and please do your self a favor, no response required, as you will continue to embarrass yourself. Are you a writer in disguise - man you use many big words and sentence structures. I guess that is impressive to your class of folks?

CU88 - between now and the election in Nov - grow up and take Kismet and TLD with you. Grow some nads boys
Peace.

LandM,
Like cradle sometimes, I may be just getting out of the wrong side of the bed, but what are you smoking?

Indeed, I have ZERO idea about what YOU are talking about half the time when referring to ME.

You never provide any connection to what I actually say in your rants at me. Add to that disjointed sentence fragments with no relation to one another, much less anything I've said. Just a mess.

Same for your rants at others.

"Grow up". Grow some nads boys"?

Peace?

F you "Been Brother".

MD with a personal attack, now you are way out of your element, love the fire in the belly. You are privileged. No, I have not confused you and yes, the little yellow man trained me not to keep threads open and ongoing. You were born in privilege and TLD played D2 BB - ok Kismet I am assuming is a science teacher at the local college - I also taught two semesters at the local liberal arts college. We all were born putting our pants on the same way. I give you credit for taking shots at 100 mph......I would have never done that nor do I comment on that. Sometimes best to stick to that lane and being childish as you three are is not sticking to your lane. Vote in November. PEACE out and yeah, I can say that and next time I will personally invite you and pay for you to visit three grave sites - might open those privileged eyes.

From today's D brief @ Defense One :
The U.S. Navy's newest acting secretary wants a "deeper" investigation into Capt. Brett Crozier's firing and whether the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt's skipper should be reinstated. That surprise announcement came this morning, and follows a series of reports that Pentagon leaders (namely Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley and the Navy's top admiral) are divided over Crozier's fate.

Full statement from Acting Secretary of the Navy James McPherson:
"After carefully reviewing the preliminary inquiry into the events surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), the Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Mike Gilday, provided me with his recommendations. Following our discussion, I have unanswered questions that the preliminary inquiry has identified and that can only be answered by a deeper review. Therefore, I am directing Adm. Gilday to conduct a follow-on command investigation. This investigation will build on the good work of the initial inquiry to provide a more fulsome understanding of the sequence of events, actions, and decisions of the chain of command surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt."

On another ship, a fast-growing coronavirus problem — this time onboard the destroyer USS Kidd. The number of confirmed cases among its crew leapt from 47 on Monday to 78 today, CNN's Ryan Browne reports from the Navy's latest figures. One out of every four sailors on the Kidd, which is docked in San Diego, have tested positive for the coronavirus.

The Kidd "will be cleaned room-by-room, with access to each space restricted. The process is expected to take approximately two weeks, at which time the confirmed healthy sailors will return to the ship, and the off-going sailors will begin their quarantine," the service's Naval Surface Force Pacific said in a statement to the U.S. Naval Institute news on Tuesday.

And select members of the crew will undergo a voluntary study to learn about the spread of the virus. That blood serology work is going to be conducted by the Navy Bureau of Medicine and the CDC. "A similar study is underway aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt, which was the first deployed ship to suffer a COVID-19 outbreak," USNI's Sam LaGrone reports.

Again, disjointed rambling, malice aplenty.
Just no clear rationality.

Do you really think that calling me "privileged" will hurt my feelings?
Of course, I'm privileged.

In so very many ways!

Born in America. How lucky is that??
Parents happily married 62 years, both healthy until my dad passed last year at 86.
Very unusual.

Though neither came from from affluent families they had supportive extended families, both went to college, both worked, taught me to value work from a very early age.

Their success and guidance enabled me to go to excellent schools and do well, and to take considerable risk in my professional life. In school I had some innate talent and worked to use it well, and had just barely enough athletic talent to find ways to excel on a national stage through sweat and risk. Lucky to have those talents and passion. Lucky to be able to use them.

I 'married up', in all sorts of ways, to my college sweetheart. She certainly didn't 'come from money', both her parents worked, dad a commercial fisherman, mom a school nurse, she put herself through college and business school no financial support from parents. Her brother and sister did the same.

Talk about lucky.

We have one son, who has turned out remarkably well. Would have liked more, and tried hard, but not as lucky there. No regrets.

So, yeah, extremely "privileged".

Beginning with being born in America.

Now on the Big Stick :

The TR's "clean crew" is beginning their "bubble to bubble" transition, back to the now "clean" ship.
A rather complex operation.

This article is a very thoughtful examination of the entire Crozier/TR affair. It makes good points in raising W Pac grey zone ops vs peacetime steaming, the divisiveness of the brown show network circumventing the black shoe c.o.c., the fallacy in comparing the TR & crew to infected cruise ships & other salient points.
