I'll make the call.

A lot of misinformation in there which fuels partisanship like we see with Bandito and PB. He also believes that conservative = Republican. The thing is, I agree with a lot of what he says about conservative beliefs in theory! That's what attracts me to the conservative ideal in many areas, from fiscal policy to the environment. The problem is where the rubber meets the road.

Republicans 150 and 100 years ago like Grant and TR seized and declared millions of acres of land (or bought for pennies on the dollar) to be owned by the federal government. This was to prevent them from being exploited by private businesses and ruined. Republican Nixon signed the bills creating the EPA and greatly increased and consolidated Social Security. These are massive government programs! Republican Eisenhower and the interstates - not really environmentally friendly but great for the nation economically and national security, and a massive government program! The thing is, most of these issues were much more bipartisan back in the day. They were seen as beneficial to the majority of Americans, so you had both parties working on them, whether Democrats were the conservatives or Republicans were the conservatives depending on the decade.

My question is do you think any Republican nowadays could propose anything close to these programs? National parks? Interstates? Social Security? The EPA?

The answer is no. The big government programs they propose help their constituents feel better and aren't conservative. Massive unfunded tax cuts (not fiscally conservative), the largest government department in history in Homeland Security (full of sieves and not conservative), and the largest unfunded Medicare expansion in history (not fiscally conservative or conservative in general, but helps older R voters).


If Republicans actually practiced conservative ideals, they would grab so many independent voters that they wouldn't have to rely on voter suppression, gerrymandering and more to win elections. They'd also have my vote.

Actually much of Ike's thinking on Interstate highway system went back to a harrowing cross country road trip he took when he was in the Army in 1919. The trip took 62 days from Washington D.C. to San Francisco -

"In 62 days, more than 80 trucks, cars and motorcycles made their way along the planned route of the Lincoln Highway, one of the first cross-country highways ever built. They crossed plains, mountains and deserts on roads that, up until Nebraska, were surprisingly well made. But once the convoy hit the West, the trucks started getting stuck in ditches, sand and mud, for hours at a time. By Utah, the conditions of the roads were so bad, it almost stopped the convoy altogether."

Nothing to see here; just Dems encouraging illegal immigrants to vote in American elections. Surely they wouldn't want that for the nation as a whole, these are just local ballot measures. Dems are very patriotic folks!

Not sure how that was responsive to the Pope's statements, but we do know that you think concerns about the environment are somehow not 'conservative' and maybe threatening to industry?

But you're apparently making common cause with the posters on here who have argued that "The Earth" has a mind of its own and responds to heal itself (thus the warming is not man influenced, it's just the Earth doing its will).

It's unclear to me who is actually deifying nature, the scientists or the deniers.
I'm leaning the deniers.

While we are on holiday it is a great time to take the kids out at night so they can see something - like the milky way that they will have very little chance to see in the future. It is a fabulous sight, something I haven't seen but very very rarely since I was a 10 year old. Use to be able to see 6th and 7th magnitude stars with no difficulty and lots of them. Now you are lucky - pre-holiday to see 4th magnitude stars.

Reminds me of a story. As a sponsor family, we hosted a young man attending the USNA who was top ranked in the Taiwan Naval Academy at our home. It was his first real time away outside the yard of USNA after his plebe summer, it was over Thanksgiving weekend. Our drive home is full of country views. I check in the rear view mirror on occasion and just see him smiling and head looking left and right, absorbing it all. We pull into our driveway, at the end of a cul-da-sac, with woods everywhere....he steps out and says under his breath, just enough for me to hear.....'holy FUk', I have never seen anything like this.

We then have dinner and head outdoors to sit by the fire nestled in the woods, under some tall river birches. About 20 minutes later, I see his knees just hopping up and down and he is smiling ear to ear....I ask him if he is doing okay and if he needs anything, he replies....I grew up in the city of Taiwan, we lived over the pharmacy that my father owns, if we need anything, anything at all, we only walk a few blocks either way....we never leave the city, my father store is open 7 days a week. He then goes on to say....I have never seen the night sky like this, never....I am soooo excited and happy, the stars look so close.
