CBS, home to that tireless non-partisan defender of sanity and truth Dan Rather, was too busy with Lawrence O'Donnell retractions to come up with much more than this today:

"Coronavirus Cases Surge in Nursing Homes Across the Country"

"A Third of US Renters Didn't Pay on Time this Month"

"Doctors Warn of Drug Shortages"

"Small Businesses Say They Have not Gotten Loans"

"National Stockpile Out of Workers' PPE"

"A Decade of Job Growth Vanishes in a Month"

"Women Urged to Delay Fertility Treatment During Pandemic"

Gosh, I feel uplifted already!!!!

(plus, the irony of a perma-negative nabob like JHU72 chiming in here that the media plays it down the middle... )

Saw an article yesterday regarding some research in China. It is found that CV jumps between humans and cats, really easily. Ferrets the same. Dogs, pigs, chickens not so much.

And I suppose those articles you cite are either not news or somehow not the truth? Oh and by the way Dan Rather has not worked for CBS for ages...

Oh - and what was CBS retracting? You actually have any specifics? Or just your usual trolling rants.

I guess you just need to mainline some Fox News dreck to keep up your optimism...

Federal Support Ends For Coronavirus Testing Sites As Pandemic Peak Nears
https://www.npr.org/sections/coronaviru ... peak-nears
Some local officials are disappointed the federal government will end funding for coronavirus testing sites this Friday. In a few places those sites will close as a result. This as criticism continues that not enough testing is available.

In the Philadelphia suburbs, Montgomery County has a drive-through site that has tested 250 people a day since March 21.

"It has been a very successful site. We are hoping by the time it closes Friday afternoon that we will have tested a little over 5,000 individuals," says Dr. Valerie Arkoosh, who chairs the commission in the county of more than 825,000 people.

Montgomery County has been hit hard by the pandemic. By Tuesday the county identified 1,294 positive cases and reported 32 COVID-19-related deaths.

Arkoosh says local officials staffed the site and the federal government provided much-needed testing supplies and access to a lab. "This site came with a contract with LabCorp, who accepted 250 samples from this site every day," and she says the county is not able to secure the supplies and tests on its own.

Arkoosh says the site, located on a local college campus, will shut down Friday. Similar announcements have been made in Colorado Springs, Colo., and nearby Philadelphia.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services tells NPR, "Many of the Community-Based Testing Sites (CBTS) are not closing, but rather transitioning to state-managed sites on or about April 10."
A very good way to lower testing - therefore lower number of positive tests...really short-sighted.

You want a feel good story Mary Poppins?

California loaned 300 ventilators to the peaking states of New York, Illinois, New Jersey and another 50 each to Nevada, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia (500 total). Gavin Newsom said, “We looked at our modeling, we looked at conditions on the ground, and we feel confident about our capacity to meet our needs, as we support the needs of others.”

Now a really upbeat take on the story from Faux News. Don't you feel better now?

They have not stopped spreading their disinformation - it just evolves in a way that protects the president (and often the rest of the Rs) from the consequences of his failures. Latest is trying to feed out information that we are overcounting (we are not - we are undercounting)...

Bill O’Reilly: Dead Coronavirus Victims ‘Were On Their Last Legs Anyway’

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/bill-o-r ... 71812bad00

Disgraced former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly resurfaced on Wednesday to share his thoughts on the wave of deaths due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

And he doesn’t seem to have much sympathy for the victims, who tend to be older and are more likely to have other health problems.

“Many people who are dying, both here and around the world, were on their last legs anyway,” he said on Sean Hannity’s radio show, according to audio posted online by Media Matters. “I don’t want to sound callous about that.”

Fox network, certain forum right wingers, and others of the far right are so happy to see Aktion T4 in action.
It has been proven a hundred times that the surest way to the heart of any man, black or white, honest or dishonest, is through justice and fairness.

NYC FDNY is reporting they are seeing 250-300 cardiac arrest cases per day now. Use to be an average day was 80. The increase is thought to be CV related at time of event. Non-hospitalized cases, 75% die.

You have to admire these guys (gals).

The scary thing is, most democrats don't consider O'Donnell to be a partisan; they actually think he's a serious newsman! Which should tell you the mind of a typical Democrat these days.

What does Lawrence O'Donnell have to do with CBS News? He works for MSNBC, and I am quite aware of his political bent and background.

Again - do you not read with comprehension? And again with the unwarranted assumptions.

Most New York Coronavirus Cases Came From Europe, Genomes Show

Travelers seeded multiple cases starting as early as mid-February, genomes show.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/08/scie ... e=Homepage
New research indicates that the coronavirus began to circulate in the New York area by mid-February, weeks before the first confirmed case, and that travelers brought in the virus mainly from Europe, not Asia.

“The majority is clearly European,” said Harm van Bakel, a geneticist at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, who co-wrote a study awaiting peer review.

A separate team at N.Y.U. Grossman School of Medicine came to strikingly similar conclusions, despite studying a different group of cases. Both teams analyzed genomes from coronaviruses taken from New Yorkers starting in mid-March.

The research revealed a previously hidden spread of the virus that might have been detected if aggressive testing programs had been put in place.

On Jan. 31, President Trump barred foreign nationals from entering the country if they had been in China during the prior two weeks.

It would not be until late February that Italy would begin locking down towns and cities, and March 11 when Mr. Trump said he would block travelers from most European countries. But New Yorkers had already been traveling home with the virus.

“People were just oblivious,” said Adriana Heguy, a member of the N.Y.U. team.

Dr. Heguy and Dr. van Bakel belong to an international guild of viral historians. They ferret out the history of outbreaks by poring over clues embedded in the genetic material of viruses taken from thousands of patients.
Fascinating article - with lots of explanation about the genetics and changes in coding they were tracking. Also shows why the travel ban to China was not really effective at all...
...but, but the WHO told us that travel restrictions don't help.

So the earlier travel restriction on China travel does not factor into the lower rates on the W Coast ?

I think the biggest single factor of where outbreaks occurred first is where there is a lot of air travel in general. There may be an effect on the W coast due to the higher number of Chinese people in/out of that region, but the best explanation for how the West has done better is mostly due to the fact that they locked things down where the outbreaks were occurring earlier (like SF).

The problem with the China travel ban is that it had tons of loopholes, and because Trump was so worried about not affecting the economy he would not either institute a bigger ban until too late, or never really considered measures like taking arriving passenger's temperatures, etc. A lot of the early treatment for incomings was to tell them to isolate for 14 days with no further followup.

Compound that with the failures to get mass testing stood up pronto (still a failure to this day) and you have just allowed the disease to incubate/spread widely. No room for error when you have up to five days of symptom free time before symptoms, and also an unknown percentage (again because we are still failing on testing) of asymptomatic carriers. A recipe for the disaster we currently see.

If you want to see how to do it right - look at New Zealand.
