I know you TDS-afflicted are gonna hate to hear this, but Trump is finding his footing. He seems like he actually understands some virus specifics that most people don’t, which I’d normally not expect out of him. I know you yahoos will fillet him regardless but the voters are likely recognizing this.

Also, Dr Birx is a rockstar.

Most of today’s media are actually asking legitimate non-gotcha questions.
We needed Trump to find his footing two months ago.

What is unfolding now is one of the great tragedies in American history ... a tragedy brought about by Trump’s incompetence and malignant narcissism.

It is not possible to catch up to a pandemic like this. Tens of thousands of Americans, maybe over a hundred thousand, will go to their graves because Trump prized his political interests over the safety and welfare of the American people.

Trump’s malfeasance will long be remembered as one of the great criminal acts in American history.

3,000 provincial (Hubei) and a few federal bureaucrats lost their jobs over the initial delay in reporting. Not that their system doesn't 'encourage' holding back bad news, but they sent quite the message in the aftermath. Note that if you are fired from a government/Party job, you will have a very difficult time finding any other job...maybe sweeping streets.

Who is getting fired over the US foul up?
Well, let's fire the ship commander blowing the whistle...that's akin to firing the Chinese doc who blew the whistle (and subsequently died).
China good. trump Bad.
Really, that's your takeaway ?

Anyhoo, Sweden’s government has adopted a “business as usual” mentality in response to the pandemic. Schools, restaurants, malls, and ski slopes all remain open until further notice. The only rules in place are a ban on gatherings of more than 50 people and an order forcing restaurants and bars to seat all customers to avoid overcrowding. This suggests that people are taking their fear cues from their government more than they are from the actual risk of the disease.
Pete -- I had not heard of Sweden's differing approach. Interesting. Sweden vs. Denmark should be a pretty good experiment. My bet is that Denmark wins this contest.

Right now, Denmark is at 21 deaths per million pop; Sweden is a bit worse at 28. Sweden deaths are doubling every four days and the curve is bending up. Denmark deaths are doubling every five days and the curve is bending down.

Both countries look to be quite early in the game. It is very cold and very dark in Scandinavia in February. Very little foreign tourism, no big outdoor concerts or festivals. Dr. Birks talked about how that appeared to be helping Sweden a couple days ago. Folks in Sweden will be a lot less isolated in April as daylight and temperatures increase.

Let's check back in a week and see how it progresses.
Or in a couple hours.

Denmark daily deaths today went from 14 to 19. Next door, Sweden's went from 59 to 69. Denmark holding steady at 21 deaths per pop; Sweden now up to 30 deaths per pop.

Maybe "business as usual" is not going to work so well for the Swedes....

Tough deal Cradle, hang in there man. I might be heading up from Texas to Honeoye in another month or so. I’d be happy to meet for a beverage, keeping the proper distance of course.

Farfromgeneva wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2020 11:26 am My mother is in the hospital (Binghamton General UHS, would’ve preferred Lourdes here but doesn’t matter, she fell and broke her arm and won’t be released without PT because she uses her arms to get up from laying/seated positions and has weak legs). The hospital is on lockdown and she had further a biopsy due to some lumps discovered on her liver which have been diagnosed as malignant. Yesterday someone on her floor contracted Corona, so the floor is on an even increased quarantine within the hospital walls. Biopsy was Tues am just got the results a few min ago. I’ve been up here since last Weds/Thurs (got in around midnight) and can’t get access to her in hospital, can’t see assisted living centers as she can’t go back to her house,or do much other than keep her bills paid and clean out a bunch of old hoarder dump in her house. I don’t have more information but in a less than robust 75yr old lady there’s a chance I and my sister (in Oakland) may not be able to see her again before she dies, as of now have no idea how severed the cancer is yet or details, but also seems like the hospital is going to be on lockdown most of the rest of this quarter. And that’s assuming the virus doesn’t get more of them. Crazy that dying people have to be quarantined from their immediate family.
So sorry to hear this news FFG. Just when she probably needs you the most, you can’t get in to give her the moral support. Horrible situation, hope there is some positive news soon.

If this bad gamble subsides I would be happy to meet you at Rheinblicks in Canandaigua. My favorite is their sauerbraten served with homemade spatzle. Maybe a cold mug of German beer.
