FDR’s programs reduced unemployment from about 25% to 15% ... still very high. However, no other president had reduced the unemployment rate by 10 points before or since.6ftstick wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 9:22 am'All we have to fear is fear itself"—WAS A LIEforeverlax wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 9:19 amAs someone who has zero expertise, I'll wait for the experts to confirm what we did wrong.runrussellrun wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 8:23 amLooks someone may be following the money.......a fan wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 12:48 am A nurse who lives two doors down said this is happening at her hospital----because so many people are rightly staying away from hospitals, surgeries and visits and checkups are all being cancelled. My mother is in the hospital (Binghamton General UHS, would’ve preferred Lourdes here but doesn’t matter, she fell and broke her arm and won’t be released without PT because she uses her arms to get up from laying/seated positions and has weak legs). The hospital is on lockdown and she had further a biopsy due to some lumps discovered on her liver which have been diagnosed as malignant. Yesterday someone on her floor contracted Corona, so the floor is on an even increased quarantine within the hospital walls. Biopsy was Tues am just got the results a few min ago. I’ve been up here since last Weds/Thurs (got in around midnight) and can’t get access to her in hospital, can’t see assisted living centers as she can’t go back to her house,or do much other than keep her bills paid and clean out a bunch of old hoarder crap in her house. I don’t have more information but in a less than robust 75yr old lady there’s a chance I and my sister (in Oakland) may not be able to see her again before she dies, as of now have no idea how severed the cancer is yet or details, but also seems like the hospital is going to be on lockdown most of the rest of this quarter. And that’s assuming the virus doesn’t get more of them. Crazy that dying people have to be quarantined from their immediate family.

Sorry to hear it, but not surprised. Two weeks ago I had this discussion with my daughter. She lives alone. Just outlining the how bad this could get, if someone gets sick, or if she does, not to expect it to be like normal times. Hospital visitors are likely not to be allowed. Invited her to move back in for the time being, but she decided to go it alone, stay put. She has lots of tenants around her, but not the same as family.Farfromgeneva wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 11:26 am My mother is in the hospital (Binghamton General UHS, would’ve preferred Lourdes here but doesn’t matter, she fell and broke her arm and won’t be released without PT because she uses her arms to get up from laying/seated positions and has weak legs). Kemp and DeSantis -- and their decidedly questionable reasons for finally shutting down their states amid the coronavirus pandemic -- are prime examples of what unquestioning adherence to the President produces, particularly when the President has been, until very recently, a fount of misinformation and underplaying of the threat posed by coronavirus.
"The fact that so many GOP big state governors -- in TX, FL & GA -- all tightened statewide restrictions immediately after Trump finally let his advisers frame the full risk from the WH podium underscores how much his earlier minimizing contributed to the critical delays in those states," tweeted Ron Brownstein, a senior editor at The Atlantic and a CNN contributor. (On Thursday morning, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott joined DeSantis and Kemp as his shelter-in-place order went into effect.)

Sorry to hear man, I wish you both the best. My mother has a degenerative brain disease and is mostly bedridden now and probably not long for this world. Since I can't visit anymore, we try to video chat a few times a week. She's also got COPD (she smoked for 40 years and quit 15 years ago), and is a breast cancer survivor. My father is 80+ and in good shape but had polio growing up and has an atrial flutter. He's taking care of her for the most part, but they have some people that come in and help out. He was originally one of the "the flu kills a lot more people" and still isn't taking it as seriously as he should, but we've been able to talk a lot of sense into him over the past few weeks, especially by highlighting how much my mother is at risk. I don't want this thing taking them out before I get a chance to see them in person again.Farfromgeneva wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 11:26 am My mother is in the hospital (Binghamton General UHS, would’ve preferred Lourdes here but doesn’t matter, she fell and broke her arm and won’t be released without PT because she uses her arms to get up from laying/seated positions and has weak legs). My aunt & uncle are 70+, and my wife's immediate family (parents, aunts & uncle) are 65+.
A lot of us on the board may not be high risk (some are), but we certainly all know people who are who are dear to us.

Very sorry to hear this, Ffg, hope there's a solution to all of this sooner than later.Farfromgeneva wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 11:26 am My mother is in the hospital (Binghamton General UHS, would’ve preferred Lourdes here but doesn’t matter, she fell and broke her arm and won’t be released without PT because she uses her arms to get up from laying/seated positions and has weak legs). Another part of the picture...have a d-in-law who works for Hospice (SU grad...I wouldn't suggest going into this line of work for the money) she says they're crazy busy (way too busy) as hospitals are discharging the terminally ill and sending them home. Personally, I think that's a better way to go under any circumstances (went that route with my father) but my point is, hospitals a pretty darn nuts right now. Crazy times, wish you well.

The problem, R3, is that healthy people visiting their dying relatives in affected hospitals are potential (as in apt to be likely) spreaders of the disease which will only lead to more deaths of the elderly and more heartbreak for everyone. I have great empathy for Farfrom as well as anyone with family suffering through these awful times, but all indications are the infection rate will break sooner, and we will get back to more normal times sooner, and fewer people will have to go through what Far is going through the more we observe the social distancing guidelines that have been established. Don't mean to sound calloused. I'm in the vulnerable group, and am resigned to dying alone should I contract the virus.runrussellrun wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 11:42 amSo many are reading this with a tear in their eye...........and YES, it IS crazy that family can't see family. Re: All things Chinese CoronaVirus
Pete -- I had not heard of Sweden's differing approach. Interesting. Sweden vs. Denmark should be a pretty good experiment. My bet is that Denmark wins this contest.Anyhoo, Sweden’s government has adopted a “business as usual” mentality in response to the pandemic. Schools, restaurants, malls, and ski slopes all remain open until further notice. The only rules in place are a ban on gatherings of more than 50 people and an order forcing restaurants and bars to seat all customers to avoid overcrowding. This suggests that people are taking their fear cues from their government more than they are from the actual risk of the disease.
Right now, Denmark is at 21 deaths per million pop; Sweden is a bit worse at 28. Sweden deaths are doubling every four days and the curve is bending up. Denmark deaths are doubling every five days and the curve is bending down.
Both countries look to be quite early in the game. It is very cold and very dark in Scandinavia in February. Very little foreign tourism, no big outdoor concerts or festivals. Dr. Birks talked about how that appeared to be helping Sweden a couple days ago. Folks in Sweden will be a lot less isolated in April as daylight and temperatures increase.
Let's check back in a week and see how it progresses.
Boycott stupid. Country over party.
