An Orioles fan, wow one more nail in his coffin in my book. My entire life the Orioles were the farm team for the Rochester Red Wings. i was always torn between the Orioles and the Yankees( my grandfathers team) i don't remember the name of their owner but he single handedly destroyed the Red Wings with his gutting the team of talent. That is when the Orioles stunk so bad we here in Rochester called them the borioles. Peter Angelos, that was his name.

Bobby Grich, Cal Ripken and Boog Powell, my favorite Orioles and i watched all of them play. Never saw Brooks Robinson play in person but damn he could play 3rd base.
I was born in '57 so my childhood hero was Brooks Robinson (who I had a beer with not long ago). I was an infielder as a kid (goalie in lax), so Brooks was my guy. Frank Robinson was a hero as well, Paul Blair, and of course the line up of pitchers was extraordinary. 4 20 game winners in a single season.

I had fun with Boog later in life...quite the character.

Cal's son went to pre-elementary and then HS in my son's class, had a great conversation with Ryan over Xmas...got to know Cal as a dad, good guy, good dad.

Farfromgeneva wrote: Tue Mar 31, 2020 5:25 pm Open borders are a classic republican value - free movement of labor. (it also increases supply and lowers the price of labor).

Smaller government is a classic republican value.

Free markets, not trying to bully and even throw business towards friends, is a classic republican value.

As to your #1, yes, but life does change. I think now there is a sense among many Republicans (I will get roasted for saying this, but it's undoubtedly true that the 'sense' exists) that 'open borders' is no longer immigrants seeking a better future, but immigrants seeking a free lifestyle (not to mention some crime and a possible Democratic wave).

Smaller government. Again, yes historically and I'd argue all the way up until the last few weeks. Something will change here...this is seismic. Health care will be a right going forward.

Agree on 3rd.
Rs may think the Ds want something - but I think here they are wrong. Yes there is a subset of the left side of the Ds that want to replace capitalism, but only a small part.

Most Ds have no problem with the competition of capitalism - as long as it is fair, and there are limits to make it so. Even Adam Smith in his original book wrote about the fact that you would need limits to keep capitalism from becoming the kind of thing that Marxism was opposing.

The best part of government being involved in setting healthcare policy and payments (and this does not need to remove all elements of capitalism from healthcare) is that if a person has reasonable healthcare regardless of whom his/her employer is (or is even self-employed) they have a much better ability to innovate and become entrepeneurs. So much of the health care dollar spent in the US is going to "profits" that make a very few extremely rich, but really do nothing for solving the fundamental issue of keeping our population healthy (and therefore productive).

In order to squeeze out the maximum profit - healthcare management in hospitals make sure they have the minimum resources to do their job - anything in reserve would be a wasted resource with respect to profit. Since either hospitals or large corporations are beginning to own many physicians practices - there are limits placed upon the employed doctors about how much time per patients they have lest they be fired for not being productive enough. And even though drug companies say their exhorbitant fees are required to do research, a significant part of their research is coming either directly or indirectly from the federal government, and as a country we do little to keep them from jacking up their prices through the roof. And for some of those medications, if they are not on an approved list a patient may be expected to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to stay alive - or a least their insurance company may.

Now back to OD - he is still trying to kill the ACA. He has already crippled it by allowing for substandard (don't cover much of everything) policies be purchased to keep people from buying under the ACA marketplace. And his loaded SC has given him a giant favor by making sure that his attempt to kill the ACA doesn't get decided until after the election.

Of course everyone on the R side talks about rationing - but you have plenty of that already. It is the insurance companies and drug companies that are doing it now - just don't approve paying for that new expensive drug, or don't allow this treatment or that without jumping through nearly impossible hoops. The thing about government making the decisions about how you allocate the $$ is that at least there is more direct input as to the decision.

Trump today criticizing New York getting off to a late start. When pressed on his own dismissing the threat he said something to the effect "I know everything, I knew it could be very bad, I knew it might be nothing". What an absolute, self absorbed imbecile.

I liked when someone asked about whether it was appropriate to wear a mask in public. Naturally, Trump fields the question over the experts. Then I stepped out of the room for a moment to return to him ranting about the impeachment sprinkled with insults. Bravo.

ok, IMO you're not advancing your cause on that doc.

It may be an act of idiocy or a whole lot of other words that end in "y" or "ism" but crime against humanity is a bridge too far.

I do understand the passion and even the notion that a vote for Trump, knowing this reality of his performance in a crisis cost tens of thousands more lives (and trillions in economic damage), is a vote for risk of more such cost in a future crisis.

but the hyperbole is counterproductive, IMO.

plenty to critique, but I thought you were going to perhaps cite tens of thousands of civilian Yemini's killed on Obama's direction to do so...

I don't like Doc's phrase applied to this gross failure by Trump, but your retort falls flat. That said, it does at least involve an intentional use of force killing others on purpose...though I don't think Obama was EVER trying to kill civilians, which would indeed be a crime against humanity.

I am not sure most leaders have 'meant' to kill civilians but it is part of war nevertheless.
