MSM data point : MSNBC Public Health Analyst Dr Irwin Redlener predicts .5 to 2 million COVID19 deaths in the US,
"... but we may be learning some other things that our children can take away from this..."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irwin_Redlener

On November 15, 2012, following Superstorm Sandy, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that he had appointed Redlener co-chair of the NYS Ready Commission, which was tasked with finding ways to ensure critical systems and services are prepared for future natural disasters and other emergencies.

On June 17, 2014, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio named Redlener special advisor with a focus on emergency management and planning to support and advise the administration's citywide disaster preparedness and response efforts.

He sure did. That’s why he’s hitting 60 percent approval in the polls from how well he’s handled it. Enjoy your fear porn and fantasyland of Orange Man Bad. He’s going to be President through 2024. Enjoy your TDS.

Trump is at 60% approval rating for his handling of Covid because Americans generously want to give him the benefit of the doubt during this pandemic. The final numbers for the day in the US show 85,000 cases, 1300 deaths and 266 new deaths. The public will bear with him unless (which is looking more and more like until) the death numbers appear to be careening out of control. This is likely to happen if people fall prey to his Easter off to church and back to work lunacy. Trump would be far better off downplaying the greatness of his response (which he does for people like Bandito) and put his energy into getting federal aid to where it is most needed, and making social behavioral suggestions that his health advisors actually agree with.

Infinite thanks to those like a fan and C&S's wife and Red's daughter and all the great American health care workers and multitude of other people dedicating their time energy and money to making things better for others in this time of crisis.

For what it is worth my wife has been re-deployed from the elective surgical center where she works over to Rochester General Hospital. She is scared out of her mind. She has not worked in a hospital environment for more than twenty years. She is not convinced that her present day skill set makes her of any use in the present environment. I told her you are a registered nurse with almost 40 years experience. They will not expect you to become an ICU nurse over night. I am trying to convince her that she should be honored to have the opportunity to help save lives. She is not buying it because she is scared. There are many doctors and nurses serving us out there right now that are just like my wife. They have been put out of their element and asked to do medical work they are not trained to do.

They are going to do their best because saving lives is what they have dedicated their lives to doing. I am so over all of the political blaming going on here. If all of us were the adults in the room we would stop pointing fingers and help to beat this bad gamboo we are facing. i admit forthright that i can be a huge jerk and sort of enjoy poking fun at people, especially my FLP friends. I'm over that for now, all i hope for is that our dedicated medical professionals and scientists can put this virus to bed. I hope none of you out there have to face this. If you do, at least you know there are many people out there in our health care system that are on your side.
I was pondering the bravery of the medical community, in this type of environment...I'd have to say these folks are about as brave as you get...at least operators can shoot back.

Truly fighting this war on the front line.
Hopefully it is not sink or swim for her. They could always use her in a subsidiary role to allow the ICU nurses to cover more patients, or to actually have her caring for non COVID cases.

My daughter (a second year resident) is in a county up North where the number of cases has more than quadrupled in a week. It was one week ago that the first case showed up in her particular hospital. Have not spoken with her in a couple of days, but it is getting scary for that area in a hurry.

And a salute from me to your wife as well
And from me as well. Same re your daughter, Red.
Folks really are heroes.
Partisanship seems to drop away entirely when it comes to appreciating these folks.
We do get testy when others appear to, by their words and actions, be making the challenge worse...for these heroes!

Given what I assume to be her age, Cradle, certainly would make sense to have her with the non Covid-19 patients. However in the crush, may not be as rational as that. Very best to her and stay safe yourself.

God bless all these folks.
Thank you MD - when she finishes clinic duty this week - hospital service, including ICU/COVID. One resident works on the COVID side/ICU, and the other does not (to preserve them for later if someone gets sick). The have limited masks at the clinic (family practice) but are running short on disposable gowns. No idea of where the hospital stands, but only 2 or 3 active cases there at this time. (Got the first one a week ago). Most of the COVID cases are probably going to a not-far-away teaching hospital that is part of a major medical school.

Interesting thing popped up in my Twitter feed. From NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/live/2020/coron ... 5-are-sick

Choir practice in location north of Seattle, March 10. Using best guidelines at the time (but before social distancing guidelines went into effect) 60 people showed up for a choral practice (community based chorus).
Before social distancing requirements were in place in Washington State earlier this month, members of a choir group took their own coronavirus precautions. They told singers not to attend practice if they had even a hint of illness.

Yet the virus has devastated the Skagit Valley Chorale, based in the rural valley north of Seattle that is famous for its tulip production. Of the 60 people who attended a March 10 practice, 45 have developed symptoms and 27 so far have tested positive, officials said. One of the group’s members has died, another has been hospitalized and others have struggled to overcome their illness.
75% got sick, almost half have tested positive.
The group gathered in rows facing a piano and a choir director. They were all in individual chairs and had space to keep separated. Ms. Backlund had made sure there were extra soap dispensers in the bathrooms for people to wash their hands.

“Nobody was sick. Nobody touched anybody. Nobody shook hands. Nobody hugged everybody like you might do in a group. There was none of that,” Ms. Backlund said.

Bill Gates on CNN pointing out that the necessary extensive research on antivirals and vaccines will cost a few billion, and compares that to the multi-trillion dollar bailout.

And also points out how his foundation has been warning about pandemics for quite some time, how we should have paid as much attention to "germ games" as to "war games".

...that was the report that says there would be 500,000 deaths in the U.K. and 2.2 million deaths in the United States. They've adjusted that number in the U.K. to 20,000. Half a million to 20,000. We are looking at that in great detail to understand that adjustment.

A few years ago, far right Tea Baggers were fretting about Democratic Party "death panels" none of which materialized. Today, thanks to a lack of health care coverage and proper government preparation, those same right wingers gave us Republican death panels. Strange how the so called "pro life" moral {sic} Christianity crowd remains silent about that.

The Racist Title of This Thread Needs to Go

Post by DocBarrister »

President Donald Trump tweeted March 16 using the phrase “Chinese virus” and received swift and immediate backlash, with many saying he was fueling anti-Asian American sentiment.

John C. Yang, president and executive director of the civil rights group Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAAJ, said he believes Trump’s phrasing has an impact.

“The deliberate use of terms like “Chinese virus” has definitely fanned the flames of racism toward Asian Americans in this country,” he said. “We have seen people associate the virus with Chinese people as they are assaulting them. It’s outrageous for any elected official to have been dismissive when the evidence of racist attacks continues to climb. Words matter and they often hold more weight when spoken by our politicians.”

Republican Moron From Kentucky Delays Stimulus Bill

Post by DocBarrister »

Looks like a single Republican moron from Kentucky (are those words redundant?), Rep. Thomas Massie, is refusing to back a voice vote on the rescue package, forcing the entire House to scramble back to Washington, DC. This could delay passage by a day or two.

I had brought up the threat of microorganisms in a couple of contexts and folks just kind of rolled their eyes. We have had people look at this but Administration has to decide to take action. My old gym mate helped develop a US response to a small pox attack. A JHU/Harvard guy. Someone here may know him. We were slow to react in this case and we are all paying for it now. Covid-19 doesn’t care if you are a Republican, Democrats, Liberal, Conservative, FLP or a Tea Partier.

Geez. Enough of the fear porn and TDS. Trump could cure cancer or this CHINESE virus and you’d still complain. Over half the cases are in NYC. Most the US isn’t under this pandemic. Trump doesn’t listen to liberal shills like you. That’s why America loves him. He puts liberals in their place. Finally, a president not afraid to stand up to the liberal media mob. Enjoy your TDS! I’m posting at a bit after 11 pm EDT. 1300 deaths now, with 268 yesterday alone. 3% roughly. Unfortunately I don’t think it stays that low.
