In addition to the measures announced by Governor Cuomo as part of the tri-state initiative, New Jersey has instituted an 8 PM to 5 AM curfew.

This will sound Draconian, but I think we need to go to the very strict rules in place in Italy right now. Only one person from a household can leave the house at a time, and only to go to the grocery store or the drugstore. I suspect those in charge, at least the responsible ones, know this, but they are moving in that direction in incremental steps and not all at once in order to try to tamp down panic as much as possible. Too extreme? Maybe, but you can always roll back the measures if we turn the corner. Much more effective to impose these strict measures a few days or a week too soon, rather than days too late.

Would this have an extreme economic impact? Yes, but the economy has to take a backseat right now to the health and safety of the citizens. The huge majority of people will eventually recover financially, but those who die unnecessarily because we don’t take the necessary and extreme measures required, well . . . .

Germany: 1.6%
Spain: 3.7%

Hoping we get down to 1%. That wouldn’t be a bad outcome.

It won’t be easy to match South Korea’s relative “success.”

Fact is, due to decades of Republican resistance to universal healthcare, our health care infrastructure is only built to serve a subset of our population. That leaves us with far fewer hospital beds per capita than nations like South Korea, which has compulsory national health insurance.

The United States has roughly 2.8 hospital beds per 1,000 people. South Korea, which has seen success mitigating its large outbreak, has more than 12 hospital beds per 1,000 people. China, where hospitals in Hubei were quickly overrun, has 4.3 beds per 1,000 people. Italy, a developed country with a reasonably decent health system, has seen its hospitals overwhelmed and has 3.2 beds per 1,000 people.

Germany is doing 4 times better than SK. YA's number for Germany is wrong!

US has lower average bed occupancy rates (80%). There are currently about 200,000 empty beds. That is to say, out hospital beds are less filled on average. You have to look at both beds per capita and average occupancy. US hospitals are full of people having non-essential elective surgery. Our real "sick" occupancy levels are much lower than reported. Hospitals now are emptying out electives in preparation. I don't think beds are really our limiting resource currently, it is likely respirators.

Yes, good information. As the LA Times and others have reported, Germany has one of the highest densities of hospitals per capita in the world and performed 35,000 coronavirus tests last week alone. They also have a culture of calling in sick and staying home when ill (17 sick days taken on average each year). One of the benefits of a good sick leave program that Republicans have resisted for decades.

Not Draconian in the least!!! Half-*ssing it is moronic. The sooner we shut everything down, the sooner we can open again. But there needs to be a plan to keep food and medicine moving, and that plan must me communicated to the people. And to get shut-ins food and medicine.

All our neighborhood facebook groups are reaching out to offer help to shuts ins. The poor in America likely don't have such things. The .gov needs to step up.

Made a run to Home Depot this morning. Really surprised at the store traffic. Mostly contractor types and seemed to be in heavier numbers than I have seen on other Monday AMs. Outdoor construction materials department real busy.

Wife said they have changed their operation to do as much telemedicine as possible. They have cancelled all "well baby" visits for kids over 3 months. I have thought for some time now that this event is likely to change the way frontline physicians interact with patients, and once we are back to normal times, they may very well stay that way.

I think in general the various governors are doing a bang up job, much better than the DC crew. The governors are where the battle will likely be won. The states with the biggest problems (in order) are Washington State, New York, California, Massachusetts and Florida.

I've read all I can find on this covid19 mess, and all I can conclude is that the symptoms are similar to a bad cold or pneumonia which is not lethal to anyone except the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.

Not too dissimilar to the H1N1 virus we slogged through 10 years ago. Nothing got closed, so most of us don't remember that as well as we're gonna remember this COVID19 catastrophe

However, we are now shutting boarding schools and restaurants and just heard from a friend in Nevada who is proud of herself that she organized a 'social distancing line' outside her Smiths Grocery so the line waiting to be one of the 25 allowed in wouldn't get too close to each other.

Are we as a nation actually becoming sensitive to the peculiar needs of the old and infirm? If so, I'm delighted! Obviously this is gonna result in suppressed economic activity, and so I conclude that the White House is convinced.

What am I missing?

What you’re missing is that this novel coronavirus has a much higher mortality rate than H1N1. If the same number of Americans become infected with the novel coronavirus as they did with H1N1 (over 60 million Americans), then we could potentially see between 120,000 to 600,000 Americans dead from the pandemic.

Fortunately, that worst case scenario won’t happen due to the extraordinary measures being taken.

Also, it’s important to prevent infection of young, healthy individuals, as they can become vectors for infecting more vulnerable segments of the population.
